I travelled to India for work back in 2005. Since I tried to eat like a native, I became very familiar with bathrooms over there. Travelling back to the US, there was a layover in Mumbai, and that airport had the bathrooms labelled as EWC and IWC, which I figured out must be for "English Water Closet" and "Indian Water Closet". The EWCs had a toilet, but the IWCs only had that porcelain trough in it.

I drove through Belgium and the rest stop was a deck over a hole that was shielded from the road by a single wooden fence.

It was awesome. It was a nice summer day though, I imagine it was a different experience in crappy weather.

Many, many years ago... Border town in Mexico. Bar had diverted a small stream into a earthen ditch running as a trough below the bar. You didn't need to leave your spot at the bar. True story.
Saw this years later in a small Nevada town in a now famous restaurant. The trough was tiled, and by the time I saw it, it was no longer used and no longer had water running through it. But it made for a great 'trivia' discussion.
Now that I think about it, I'm going to visit that restaurant and see if they've removed the tile trough.
