Gabe beat Efren at 1H at the DCC

Can someone who's at the DCC tell us how this went down?!?! For the longest time I've always thought that Efren was a mile in front of everyone else in 1H. This DCC he fell to Pagulayan and now to Gabe Owen. I know Gabe's 1H must be super strong, especially for him to still not have lost any matches yet. Is Efren just not playing up to speed this time round? Age finally catching up to him? Or is Gabe the new person to watch?

Also, it says on the az homepage that Bustamante will face Nevel 7 pm friday night...but his name is also highlighted in the 1P final-3 round. Did they play already?

Somebody at the DCC please chime in!

Efren

Efren is battling health and other issues. He definitely isn't up to his usual game at the moment. Will he get back in form? Probably, but too soon to say. Gabe is red hot at the moment but any win over Efren is a little tainted right now. Hard to say how Gabe would have done against last year's Efren or Efren from two years ago. Hopefully Efren will be in better health and spirits next year and we can see how they match up.

Round of three means somebody gets a by. They used to cut cards for it, no idea if they still do. I guess Bustamonte got the by this year.

I think Reyes has had the longest peak or prime of any player I ever heard of. He's in his 50's and still expected to win everything he enters. What a great palyer!

Maybe Efren is past his prime, and on a down hill slide.

Could be time for him to open a Pool School, or Pool Room like other was greats.

You are the front runner for the worst idea of year so far. Congrats.

Gabe is going to be tough to beat with no losses and a buyback. Someone has to beat him twice in a row tonight.

It's a short race to 3 and there were 400+ players. Efren was still in the final 6 (?) and he won it the past 5 times he entered the event. I think that just proves that he's still got it. I doubt anyone, Gabe included, would play him even in one pocket in a gambling match.

Having said all that, he may be just a bit off his game at the moement for all the reasons others have stated.

Even the best get beat sometimes. I mean c'mon - you can't win 'em all. JMHO

Well said. I was thinking the same thing and scrolled through until I found your post.

Go to OnePocket.Org forum to see my write up on the match. Under DCC HookUp. Its just too depressing to repeat here.

Nice win for Gabe... he must be super pumped.

I could be wrong, but I'm not, in saying that Gabe isn't jumping up past Efren's speed. Efren is still MILES past the rest so your origional hunch was right. Doesn't matter if his age/illness catch up to him, no one else is at the level that he is...

I thought Efren had it after round 10.. I made a bet with aball.. I got the field against efren and I have to say after the tenth round I didnt like it. I get lucky. lol.. Amazing I won this bet.

Agreed. You don't win 5 DCC 1 pocket championships in a row and then suddenly lose your mojo if you don't happen to win #6 ;)

No ...

Efren is still the best, everyone has off nights, but several posters on here
have 'underestimated' Gabe's 1 hole game, and when he is stroking, he can play with the best, as you have seen.

Gabe is a great player, and his 1P game must have jumped up a bit..... but I still don't think he's cracked top 5, though I really gotta see the play and analyze his game. It would be nice to see some great players jump up in 1p, I don't see how they don't -- outside of just not having the mental capacity.

I have a video of Cliff and Gabe playing a few years back at the DCC.... Cliff just BEAT on him, and I we all know how Cliff and Efren play. I'd find it hard to believe that Gabes game jumped up that much....

maybe some knowledgeable players who were there can give me some input

CocoboloCowboy...First of all, as was mentioned, you're way off base, even making that comment. Second...Efren was asked point-blank, how he did what he does (play incredibly well, so consistently), and could he teach it to others. Efren, being intelligent (read: street smart), pointedly remarked, "Even I don't know how I do what I do. If you want to learn pool, go to people who TEACH pool!" That pretty much says it all, coming from a world champion.

Even now nobody wants a piece of Efren for a sustained period of time in one hole. He is still in a class all by himself.

life lessons

I feel that Gabe is in his zone and is really focused. This is allowing him to shoot the game that he sees in his mind. Efron missed a few shots and made some bad shot selections and had to pay for it. I still feel that Efron is still as good as ever just that sometimes the other players makes you pay for what you do on the table.
