do you posters out there really have the $$$ to gamble/bet, etc, that is talked about on here?

somebody offered to play me for $200 a set and thought that was a small amount. i about had a cow - i dont have $200 to blow in case i lose! i have bills to pay, mortgage, car, electric, phone, cell phone, credit card, retirement to save for, etc, etc.

there is a thread now about Incardona/Bowman playing for five digits. jeepers creepers, folks..........:eek:

i told a couple of guys shortly after i got my GCIV they could come over and we could play 9-Ball for a few hours, each throw in $50, and keep track of who won how many racks and then split the $150. they thought that was chump change. i thought since they played a ring game with the winner getting $1 from the others it would be enticing to them.

I don't know..........I'm no poolhustler :D , but I think that DCP may be sharkin' us with all his "What about this....." threads. He's probably an A player in sheep's clothing!!

That being said, I'd play him for whatever amount he would want.

there are a lot of full time players gambling it up all the time , us average working stiffs with mouths to feed and bills to pay don't gamble much , well lets say responsible ones.

good points selftaut. i've often thought about venturing out to play in a tournament. however, the job i have sort of prevents me from gambling, at least for the most part. seems like that should take priority over the gambling aspect of this hobby.

I've personally played for a couple thousand a set, but have seen much higher. If I like the game a lot then its pretty much unlimited how much I will bet.

Dude, gambling and betting are different things. Get it thru your head and you next polygraph will be fine!!

You are making the right choice by prioritizing your career/ retirement$. You can be one of those old guys at the poolroom after you retire.

The most I have played for was for 500.00 a set and that was for only 3 sets:D . The guy had a lot of money and very little ability. He shouldn't have been playing me for that amount but I guess if you have the balls and the money to burn than its not a big deal. I have a wife and two kids to support so i make sure that if I'm playing for money it's a done deal:cool: . i do play plenty of players on my level but that usually goes back and forth. If i donate to someone like (Bustamonte, Parika, Mcreedy etc) I make sure that it's cheap since I don't plan to win and I look at it as an investment in my game. Another thing that I notice is that it's hard to get a game at times. I am mainly an 8 ball/ straight pool shooter. i don't come across to many guys that gamble in that around here:( .

I was at hardtimes in Sacamento last week and saw a lot of 1-10,000 dollar sets at 4 in the morning. :eek:
 
I don't think you'll find a lot of guys on here with big $$$ to wager. That's not a knock, its just that you have to consider the audience. I think the typical AZB diehard is either:

1) a young guy (high school or college age) that has a lot of free time on his hands...but correspondingly little $$$...

2) or a working stiff that gave up on his pool fantasy to pursue his dream of a desk job (hence time to click away on the 'net during the day), an overbearing wife, and a litter of screetching kids. Just like the guy in 1), he has correspondingly little $$$.
 
What some people fail to realize is that when you hear about guys matching up for say $2000 a set. It is very rarely 2 guys reaching in their pockets and posting up $2K each, or even a single backer posting the whole load.

Usually it is a "corporation" style deal. 3 or 4 guys all go up together, sometimes the player puts in his own money, often he doesn't.

I gotta disagree with you on this one.

There have been alot of $2K-$5k cues change hands on this forum. I have seen some forum members get in on the action when they liked it.

If you don't think there is some gamble on this board, just put somebody in the box against Shane :D :D
 
DCP.......to answer your question: I personally don't gamble for large amounts. I have a full time job, wife, kid, other hobbies, house remodeling, horses, dogs, cats, bird, etc.. I am a "cheap sets" kind of guy, $10 to $50mostly. I have seen some big money games and know people who will play for big money. Not to mention that I have been buying high end cues to add to my collection and need to fix up my garage for my "new" Gold Crown I.

If you ever head to LA, look me up and I'll play you some "cheap sets" !!

IIRC, when there was a "how old are you?" survey here on AZB a little while back, a good number of us were in their 50s... like myself... and most guys in their 50s have a fair amount of discretionary income... but likely not the game to wager five figures... fwiw. ;)
 
Yeah, I have played a lot of hundred-five hundred sessions. I've even played for $3000 per set. That doesn't mean I'll do it with a stranger. I match up pretty well and stay in touch enough to get a good line. I do believe there is a lot of TALK here. No more than is in the poolroom, though. All in fun. If you bet the rent, you SHOULD lose. Because .... you shouldn't be playin' with the family's money to begin with. Keep it within your means, and playing for the cash will help your game.

I got arrested by the MPs for playing for money in the NCO club once. Seems Miss Annie the Door Lady didn't like hearing about me taking down the cash, so she called the cops.

It never affected me one bit. The only way gambling affects your security clearance is if it is found out during your reinvestigation that you have ran up massive gambling debts.

The reasoning behind that is, the security minded folks investigating you figure if you have run $20,000 into debt by gambling, then you are more prone to a foreign agent offering you money in exchange for information.

Nobody in the military or government is going to take your clearance away for playing $200.00 sets of 9 ball.

Unless you lose 100 sets in a row.

i have seen action from $0.25 to over a million(achie) its all the same, the balls roll around the box no matter what the bet. all games are won and lost when you negoiate them not when you play them.
 
Yeah so often I think people on this website are full of bs. I mean where I play is a famous pool hall in southern california. So yes you do see pros from state level to world class, bet lots of money. You can see 500 a set, 1000 a set or whatever. But God you should watch them try to set something up. Its like little kids in a sandbox, trying to figure out each others speed, what weight to give, how much to bet, and believe me its not like Morro shows up with 5k in his pocket that he worked hard for, and wants to play whoever blew into town that week. You have all these "guys" that stand around, they never play, they just stand around in the bleachers or in the corners walking around with the "you wanna play sum?" look. Then they go get thier guy. Now I havent been in my pool hall in a while. I practice at home now mainly. But can most people afford to play 500 a set? I don't know. Money is a very relative thing. But considering that people complain about gas prices at a measly $3.00 a gallon and any other number of grieviances towards the rising cost of living especially here, Im going to say that even 100 dollars is a lot of money. But then again if you "only" play for 100 dollars, you don't get to play the top A player to pros. That is actually the reason I don't really play that many people, I play at about A level, so im always having to give up weight, which I actually don't believe in. So to play someone even would be atleast 3-5 bills per set! Well I do alright for myself at 26, but if I can go on a nice little vacation somewhere for 500 bucks, im not going to risk being sat in my chair for six racks and loose. So to summerize. I think that either your a great player and have a backer. Youve gamble way beyond your means. You have lots of money to blow. Or your a liar. Either way as an A player im caught in the wow your pretty good, give me some weight, but not wow your great let me back you. I know im not the only one.
