Gambling dispute thread #1,209

The guy I was referring to in my story less than a month later ran over his ex-wife and her boyfriend with is truck, then got out and shot them with his shot gun and then shot and killed himself. I think the boyfriend ended up living but is now a paraplegic, there are somethings that are more important than a few dollars.

You couldn't have known that when you played him. If you did know he was a wacko you should never have been gambling with him. Johnnyt

So I went to go play a small a small weekly 8b tourney.

I barely cash in third place and stick around to watch the last match.

Towards the end of the match, I'm sitting in my stool with my case hanging on my shoulder ready to leave once it's over.

As soon as the match is over, the winner of the tourney (the guy that sent me to the loser side) comes up to me and says, "Let's play a game for the money you won."

Without saying a word, I stand up, open my case, put my stick together and we get a game going.

I end up winning and he acts like he's completely oblivious to the fact that we're playing for anything. He starts rambling about how I didn't say yes or shake on it.

Admittedly, I should have verbalized it to confirm but wouldn't me literally getting up to play be confirmation enough? My cue was broken down in my case which was hanging over my shoulder!

Am I in the wrong? Is he being petty?

I hear what everyone is saying, but I still have questions. Like, what was the race to?
I mean, did you ask to be paid after just one game? If nothing else was said, that would be a little weird to assume it was just one game for the cash.

Now if a race was specified, that would be different. Since he asked, and specified an amount and a race..... it would be reasonable to figure that set was for the third place money.

During the dispute I realized he was a nut job and let the money go, beforehand he seemed very normal.

Sorry guys, in my intent to keep it simple and to the point of the thread, I left out some info. He did pay up after whining like a baby.

To me, "Let's play A game for the money you won." Means one game.

Now, if he hadn't been a little b*tch about it, I would have played more. Matter of fact, he insisted on running it back since "now he knew". I declined. I don't want bad action. It really takes the fun out of it.

As for posting, I would have had it been for a bigger amount.

Thanks for confirming that he was indeed a nit.

Tell everybody in the place the guy air barreled you. Everybody. Repeatedly.

Embarrass the shit out of him.

Here's some tatics for you

OK, Once the bet is agreed to you have to make him post. I like to place all the cash under a glass near the table.

To make sure he plays I always give him the break.

I stand behind him as he breaks, not just to display proper manors, but to position myself so I can smash him in the back of his head with a HOUSE cue, when he attempts to break.

Now it's simple to grab the cash and get out of there.

I have never lost a money game .. never.

Same thing happened to me last week. Guy wanted to play for 5 bucks a rack. Didn't pay, said he'd go to the bank and be back later... He actually did come back which was surprising. He then proceeded to buy drinks for his friends! I saw that he had cash, but still didn't pay me!!!

I told him that he needed to square up his bet, but if he didn't then that was on him. I let everyone know this guy was chicken sh*t. I had a bad vibe about him before we even played.

Definitely learned to post the money first. For me, getting into a fight over 5 bucks with a 280 pound 50 year old does not pay off. But having everyone know this guy is a POS... priceless

What a bunch of pussies in pool today. Everyone is scared of getting sued. I know it's only $10 but it would be the point to me. If more of these low-life nits got the hell beat out of them most of the rest would see the light. And don't tell me violence never solved anything. I broke a cue over an ex heavyweight boxers head for not paying up the $10 he lost to me on a BB. It wasn't the first time I got my money owed or a pound of there flesh with violence. Johnnyt

LOLOL.....ok, Johnny....

Eric >lol

I'm not going to search for Tom Ferry's rules but they included post in advance, pay after each set, anybody can quit whenever they want. Before anything happens on the table he established those rules and they were developed the hard way - on the road.

And for Johnny T, Tom's description of the fight Tom got into with a guy who turned out to be a karate instructor was priceless. Both ended up taking the same taxi to the hospital.

I used to write for a well known pool magazine years ago. Everything was fine until they didn't pay me for an article I wrote and they USED in their magazine.

I was just writing for kicks, as I had a full time job.

As I was *****ing in a pool hall about it, one of the old time hustlers who usually didn't say much, came up and said, "Make everyone post, no exceptions". Of course, everyone in the place cracked up. :D

I think that was the last article or book I contributed to....

*Edit* As clarified in my post (#25) he did pay up.

It hurts, just swallow your pride and move on, never play him again. Not worth hurting your fist on his ugly face.

I would've said fair enough (for not verbalizing the acceptance of the game), and asked him LOUDLY, "wanna play for what YOU won?!"

Probably not the first time a guy swallowed his bride, but this time she wasn't even
involved, and what is he doing playing pool for money on his wedding night.

The laugh of the day... Thanks, though might not be far fitched for a pool player to take his bride to a pool hall hhhhhhhh somebody is awake

I play with a guy who's constantly badgering me to play for 5 a game 8 ball on a bar box. Whenever I win, he just stops talking to me and walks away. He suddenly becomes very interested in what's going on at the bar or on the TV. He always pays up eventually, but every single time I have to go find him and ask him at least twice, sometimes more, for my money. It's like he thinks I'll forget and just go away.

I would just take it on the chin as a learning experience. Next time someone asks you to gamble say ok but let's post the money for 3 sets. That way your opponent is guaranteed to play you 3 sets and there is no chance of breaking even!!

You couldn't have known that when you played him.

Some would argue that the fact that you never really know what someone is capable of is reason enough to avoid beating them up over a gambling debt as you suggest. Sometimes you find out the hard way they were capable of a whole lot more than you thought they were.

Here is just such a case I am personally familiar with. Larry and Juan are gambling. Juan wins. Larry refuses to pay. Juan is pissed at getting stiffed and hits Larry in the head with a pool ball. The next time they run into each other a couple of months later outside of a different pool hall Larry beats Juan to death. Whether or not Larry deserved to get hit upside the head I am pretty sure if he could that Juan would tell you that it wasn't worth it.

I would have said "that's fine, post." Then proceeded to take every dollar the little ***** would play for until he quit.

Beating someone in a tournament is different than beating someone for the cash. Some players are better suited mentally for one or the other. Judging by the story, he was better suited for tournament play than money games. If that's the case, I say "bring it." Take his money home and put it up on the wall, so every time you look at it you have a reason to smile.
