Without knowing more than the news article said, i guess the police had information that Gibson in fact where breaking the law.
The question is: Did Gibson knowingly buy ebony from Madagascar or where they fooled by a supplier?
As for the illegal wood, pets, food, diamonds etc. trade, it's important to treat these violations as serious crimes, deforestation, blood diamonds, the mutilation of sharks and other endangered animals for use in herbal medicine with no proven effects is a serious problem. Blood diamonds fuel conflicts that would othervise not be nearly as grave.
Deforestation is a serious problem, not only for the citizens in the country where the deforestation happens, but for all of us, since trees store a wast amount of Co2 that's being released by our fosil burning lifestyle.
Poaching and killing of endangered animals for "medisin" ivory, hide etc. kills off even more species, which in turn alters the whole food chain and thus cause more extinction.
