read this afternoon that gibson guitar here in memphis and in nashville was raided today by the us fish and wildlife department.

they closed both places and sent all employees home. they were looking for ebony wood that was supposedly from madagascar.

i dont know how to link the article.

little known fact

Some woods are just as illegal to have as illegal ivory or leather or hides from endangered animals. Those that have these woods in cues are well advised not to advertise it in public. Odds are you won't be bothered but you never know.

Hu

they got raided a few months ago for BRW too. Raiding Gibson would be like raiding McDermott or other large production company. Not like busting in my door and taking two 18 inch pieces of something. The scale is way different, Gibson has more wood at one time than all the custom cuemakers combined, and they've been doing it for years and years, that's a lot of wood.

I wonder how many dead bodies they stepped over to get to the evil guitar shop.

I hope the prices of Gibson guitars plummet especially the old acoustics, bad Gibson.

so anyone interested in selling an old Gibson acoustic cheap let me know I can help you out, I am sure you wouldn't want to be seen playing a guitar from that horrible Gibson company.

Guns next?

I hope the Goverment don't come for my Les Paul. Our guns will be next.

Actually the Les Paul would come after the guns technically. The PC'ers have taken away our ability to use them for anything but wall hangers. How many decades ago was it when you could shoot a shotgun round of rock salt into a trespasser's a$$ with impunity? That must've been a great time. If I can't use a gun, I might as well not even own it. I guess you could use it if you had a burglar on video with his switchblade an inch from your neck. At least we can still play pool.... with wooden cues. For now.

Being from Canada, I have never fired a hand gun. I have inquired about getting an FAC for one but its just too much hassle to own one and get to actually use it.

Unfortunately, it would seem that Gangs own more unregistered hand guns than we own legal ones.

UTUbe Orangutans. The deforestation to grow palm trees for palm oil is
destroying their natural habitat and killing them off at an alarming rate.
Pretty soon, the only animals that will be left will be the ones in our Zoos.

I am thoroughly disgusted with Canadas Prime Ministers statement re gold mines in our Northern territories.

It goes basically like this. "Digging a few holes in our natural habitat for animals is going to create a bit of environmental damage, thats not going to stop our gold mines".
I guess he is hoping for the Inuit votes next time around.

I'm not sure about the legality of the wood. It can be bought & sold openly here in the USA once it has been processed through customs. There must have been a reason for the raid. I know of several wood dealers who sell madagascar rosewoods & ebonies without worry of breaking the law. If it isn't smuggled, and it's documented via customs, then its not illegal. If it comes in labelled as something else just to get it past customs then yeah, it's illegal.

Better to be tried by 12 than carried by six!!!

Thats un American! Move south and you can shoot until your trigger finger bleeds or you run out of ammo and we have a lot of ammo down here.

Without knowing more than the news article said, i guess the police had information that Gibson in fact where breaking the law.
The question is: Did Gibson knowingly buy ebony from Madagascar or where they fooled by a supplier?
As for the illegal wood, pets, food, diamonds etc. trade, it's important to treat these violations as serious crimes, deforestation, blood diamonds, the mutilation of sharks and other endangered animals for use in herbal medicine with no proven effects is a serious problem. Blood diamonds fuel conflicts that would othervise not be nearly as grave.
Deforestation is a serious problem, not only for the citizens in the country where the deforestation happens, but for all of us, since trees store a wast amount of Co2 that's being released by our fosil burning lifestyle.
Poaching and killing of endangered animals for "medisin" ivory, hide etc. kills off even more species, which in turn alters the whole food chain and thus cause more extinction.

I frequent a few different instrument forums, and Gibson does not seem to enjoy a sterling reputation. I'm not a user of their products, and it seems likely that I won't become one in the near future.

update

gibsons ceo held a news conference today.

he stated their wood is properly imported. he also stated the feds didnt specifically state what they were investigating but suggested wood that was imported from india and not finished by indians was illegal.

he commented that gibson was implicated in criminal activity but was not charged with anything and that was plain wrong.

no word yet from the feds.

BlueHog,i've seen some of those 50cal air guns you guys are building up there,no need for gun powder if you have 1 of those monsters.

A 50 cal air gun. I wasn't aware of this.
Probably lend itself well for plinking cans in the country.
I'll have to see if I can get an FAC for one.
Pellets for this would probably be expensive, yes?

I have a friend that had ebony inlays in the hardwood floors of his house. I guess the feds will take his house next?

The problem is NOT with Gibson. It is with our customs inspections, illegal immigrants, smuggling problems. Our government has gone in the direction of cutting budgets for regulatory agencies while raising the budgets of enforcement agencies. So this way we allow something in our country. Then the government seizes all the assets. More money this way for the government. Same thing as when they seize someones $400,000 home because they sold $500 of weed from it. Some people worry that the USA will become a police state. Those people are naive. We already ARE a police state. We are just really GOOD at it, so no one noticed.
