I'm going to be in Vegas in August 2012 for 1 week and was wanting to know what pool halls are a must to visit? Also are there any pool related event going on in the month of August in Vegas?

Any hotel recommendations? I would like to keep it under $200.00 a night.

Here are a few Poolhalls in Vegas:

1. Poolsharks
2. The Cue Club
3. Mickey's
4. Best Billiards - My personal favorite - Clean place, non-smoking, GREAT EQUIPMENT, and, beleive it or not...GREAT ITALIAN FOOD...LOL!

Cue Club for sure- right down from the Strip and in walking distance from Sahara, Circus Circus, and Riviera. Old fashion pool hall with plenty of action if you're looking for it.

And it's not an open tournament, but if you're there when the APA is at the Riviera, it's quite the spectacle to see. A very well run event with tons of vendors, Diamond tables, and a massive amount of players everywhere. Neat to see.

Diamond tables

Sorry, but 'wambamcam' (in previous post) is mistaken.

APA event does not use diamond tables. They cancelled the contract with diamond after I acquired the BCALeagues in 2004. (makes no sense to me either-it only punishes their own players).

The Bcapl national championships, held in may at riviera do use diamond tables - about 280 of them!

Yes, when I read wambamcam's comments, I thought I recalled a lot of complaints here on az over the extremely poor condition of the Valley barboxes that were used at the last APA nationals in Vegas.

You're right, Mark, they appear to be punishing their players. :(

I visited two rooms my last visit. The Cue Club was very nice -- clean, good equipment, recently recovered tables, and knowledgable staff. The woman behind the counter asked what kinda of table I wanted and I told her, "Tight, but not stupid tight" and she smiled and sent me over to a nice GC that was just that.

Pool Sharks I was not impressed with. The only thing they have going for them are the four or five Diamonds. But the room and tables were not so clean.

The APA does not use Diamond tables. There R not that many vendors either. There R lots of pool players :thumbup:

Thanks for all the info guys. I'll check out the hotels and a couple of those pool halls will be on my list for sure.

MIckey's is a little off the strip but well worth the trip. Great staff, clean and great tables.

I have heard good things about Best Billiards as well.

Just shop around you should be able to find a nice room for WELL UNDER $200 a night.

It is Vegas, you wont be in your room much anyway.

The BEST DEAL on Hotel are Old Las Vegas like Downtown. Fitzgeralds, Union Plaza, etc. If you are not going to spend a lot of time in your room, why blow money on a fancy room.

I was just at Best Billiards about 2 weeks ago and I'm pretty sure people were smoking. With you saying it's non-smoking I'm second-guessing myself, but I was definitely having trouble breathing. I would still recommend it, though.

To the OP, Bally's isn't bad if you want to be in the center of the strip. I was just in Vegas for the Black Hat and Defcon conferences and Bally's is perfectly located. You can walk to Caesar's and there's a free shuttle to the Rio. Having said that, if I go again, I'm probably going to stay off the strip and get a rental car. Gambling doesn't interest me, and the cabs are expensive (to me, anyway); the ~4 mile trip to Best Billiards (literally straight down the road from Bally's) cost about $17 before tip.

Best Billiards LV is a no brainer.

I guarantee the playing room itself is non-smoking. Great tables especially for us carom players. The food is awesome, I suggest some eggplant pasta.

Sorry for the mistake, when I was playing the Team and Singles events years ago they had Diamonds. Of course, that was quite a while ago.

Your correct about the Cue Club. Walking yes, nighttime no. Better delete the Sahara from your memory. Closed during the BCAPL event.
Note the APA event is qualified members only (to play). Even Mini-mania is only open to APA members. If you are one, bring your membership card with you and keep it on you at all times while at the Riv. If you have a rental vehicle, don't miss Pool Sharks, Mickey's Cues and Brews and Best Billiards. Vegas is blessed with four great rooms! Just pay attention to your surroundings at all times.
