Good News for American Pros

Why is it that the negative threads grow like weeds, like the players not getting paid, cubc losing to OMG, or Earl Strickland telling the Brits that London sucks?

When good news comes our way, it sometimes goes by unnoticed or may not get much recognition. Well, I'm going to give the recent good news a little forum time by creating this thread! Let's see if good news is just as popular as bad news on AzBilliards Discussion Forum.

Has anybody read the Main Page of AzBilliards today?

Mark Griffin Makes the Pros an Offer They Can't Refuse

Industry leader Mark Griffin has announced his intention of promoting new pro events. Due to the current lack of direction, and compounded by leadership that has been unable to protect player welfare, Griffin guarantees generating $200,000+ in added prize money in 2009. Plus, he presented players with a plan for continued growth that provides players economic security for their future.

Troubled by lack of genuine sponsorship, players not getting paid at association sanctioned tournaments, ranking snafus, event scheduling conflicts, etc., Griffin agrees that the pros are in worse shape than ever.

"When I see the state of affairs for the pro players, it makes my blood boil. I have been around this sport for 45 years. Recent setbacks have sent pro player economic opportunities back to the stone age," fumes Griffin.

Professional sports, take golf for example, have a strong amateur base. Pool is no different. Griffin, as CEO of the BCA Pool League, has 60,000+ members. This infrastructure offers the pros an opportunity, through cross promotions, sponsorships, and membership drives, where the amateur base can help fund pro events and allow both the opportunity to grow.

As always, there are a few conditions. "I will welcome player input, but no entity will tell me what I have to do. We are spending considerable time, and money, on pro player behalf. To protect our investment, and the pros, we will probably have to initiate a new association where player's ideas and concerns can be addressed."

Mark has a spotless reputation in the industry. His success with the BCA Pool League, Diamond Billiard Products, etc., speaks for itself. He sees the offer as a stable way for pros to make a living.

"This concept is, obviously, a work in progress. I had been talking with some of the more high-profile players who had expressed their concerns and, suddenly, this all came to a head and something just had to be done. We all agreed that, by working together, this plan could work.

"Hey, I can see that players could even have health insurance in the coming years."

What a concept! Attention pros. So that you can be kept in the loop, please forward your contact info to markg@playbca.com. Please include a phone number.

Bravo to Mark Griffin! I can't wait to learn more about this venture! What say you, dear readers of the forum?

I don't know what to think at this point and I imagine many others are waiting for more information before making judgments.

However, when I saw this, I got that good, warm, fuzzy feeling about things. I think Mark could be the shot in the arm that pro pool needs. He has the passion and he seemingly can afford to dive in. I wish him and the players all the best.

I hope they go about this in a smart way. This could be the first day of the rest of their lives.

Considering the current economical times, this seems like a godsend to the professional tournament trail. I can't wait to learn more. :)

Mark is a standup guy. I do not see anybody being left unpaid on anything he is involved with at any time. Mark is also a player himself so he understands the players mindset.

Now if he can come up with a format to attract additional sponsorship. I hope this means they will have live pool on TV eventually. My idea to get a slot on TV. Start tourney play so the tourney will finish on Wed before 5pm. Let the loser side matches play concurrently on Tues night say at 10 PM. Get the semis (for winner of the loser side) and finals live on TV Wed during the day. Making pool happen during the day (different) and live (different) with a good promoter. Let the TV channel replay these matches for up to one week to fill other time slots. Do not let them replay these matches for a number of years and then only on the classic channel. Keep pool fresh like the other sports.

Good luck Mark, thanks for all you have done for the sport.

This is the best news in Men's pool in a long time!!

I have the utmost confidence in Mark, and his crew to run things right. The way it's supposed to be done. By far the most qualified in the business, with the knowledge, and experience it takes to run things smoothly.

This is going to be a big step for Men's pool. I'm behind him, and willing and able to help in any way that I can.

AND the guy can play too.....what more can you want?

Very cool picture, Rick S.

BTW, I'd recognize that back anywhere. That's Mike LeBron in the background! :p

Mark is an extremely competent hard worker, who understands how to succeed at what he is doing and if he can bring the pro's under control and make them accept that there are rules that must be followed, he has a good chance of succeeding. I wish him the very best.

Not trying to be negative here, but I have a question that I am surprised no one else asked yet- Mike Janis announced his new plans for pool. Shortly after that he announced that someone was stealing his idea, and people thought it was the IPT, ect, and commented on how bad that was. Now Mark Griffin announces his plans, which sound very similiar to what Mike Janis announced. Is this the guy tht stole Janis's idea?

If not, then more power to Mark Griffin. If so,why is everybody praising him?

Both of them are stand-up guys with good reputations. Wouldn't it be cool if they ended up working together for the future of pool?

Now, that would be something! When great men come together with a common goal, good things can happen.

Encouraging!

Sounds like a plan! Mark Griffin is well known and respected, and his business experience will be invaluable in this venture. It could be something to grow in future years if it takes off, that could add some security to pro players lives.

I wish him all the best in making this happen. I wonder how many events he plans to have in 2009. I would guess maybe 5-6 events.

And yes, probably some of the best news for Pro pool ever. A legitimate businessman, who knows something about pool, stepping up to the plate. Not only does he love pool, but understands the need for real leadership to build the Pro Tour. A group to take charge and organize things, but still listen to players concerns. Maybe some of the ego's and favoritism, and yes, unscrupulous dealings from the past, will be kept out of the picture. I've only met Mark twice, and very briefly, but he seemed like a very nice man. It's not millions in $$$$$$$$ he's {PROMISING} the players, but a chance to establish a legitimate tour. A big THANKS to Mark Griffin. Maybe our sport wil finally evolve to what it should be.

Griffin--Right guy, right time

Mark Griffin is probably the only guy who could bring this off at this point in time, both in terms of resources and integrity. Anyone who has ever met and conversed with Mark is immediately struck by his selflessness. He has the refreshing ability to be fair to all parties, and to put everyone in a win-win situation. If I were a pro player, I'd be delighted that someone of Mark's stature has stepped up to the plate to drag pro pool out of it's current mess.

Though I don't know the specifics of his plan, I know that Mark is the best person to make this happen. Hopefully everybody else realizes that as well. The players need to give their support to a positive, results oriented person - and that is Mark Griffin.

When BCA announced taking over the rankings, I said they better start holding events. I guess they had plans, well MG had some. Starting to come together now. Hopefully something like the women's tour will be established. Pro will finally mean Professional... Not just someone that can shoot and afford to travel and play in events!

Wouldn't it be great!

It is good to hear that the problem is being addressed. However, he hasn't really said anything other than there is a problem and "he" will fix it. Seems to me that it is about helping the pros get organized not about organizing the pros which is akin to herding cats.

His opening salvo is not good and it sounds like he is seeking control. I have heard it said before that pros for the most part are only concerned about the money and will not organize themselves. There may be some truth to this but I have read where the pros are working with kids and donating their services in other areas too. It takes a few good men to initiate a good profesional organization. Perhaps they need player representatives to help organize the sport.

Bottom line unless Wilson listens closely and gets the dedicated participation of the pros it will be just another effort like many previous efforts to control the sport from outside. I think that serious professionals organize themselves and I hope that is what Wilson intends to help the pros do.

hi

well im thrilled mark is interested in the mens tour.he understands that the casual players are what support pool and the pros should support them.i am ready to help mark with his plan and its a good one.he will probably be letting people know his plans soon.if we come together things will happen very quick and the recreational player will be greatly responsible for propool being successsful. keep your ears peeled for future announcements as i feel they are definitely worth hearing.
