Well yesterday, I went 2 and out in a tournament. As I'm walking out the door, my ATM machine is walking in. I quickly pull a 180 to go make my $10 back. So we start off playing for nothing (he always "needs" warm-up games) before going to $2 a rack. Before I know it, I'm up $20 and thinking he's about to quit. I've never made more than $20 off of him before and he's always been good for the money; though sometimes he has to leave for a couple of hours before coming back with the cash. In other words, I know he's good for it so we don't pay out until we're done and we don't post. So I'm up $20 when he decides he's in an extra generous mood and bumps the bet to $4. I'm playing fairly well and he only wins a couple games and soon he's down $64. Now he wants to move to a bar table. Long story short, he wins one, I win one and I'm up 5-0 in the third set. Essentially I'm up $100. He decides he needs to go outside and get stoned so I bang some balls around waiting for him. BTW, I've turned down 3 other games while we've been playing. He calls the bar about 15 minutes later and says he's getting arrested and we'll have to finish later. I didn't talk to him but the bartender relayed the message. So I wasted 4 hours to not get my money. He did leave a cue so I have that but it's worth $50 at most, and a $10 case. Sorry, I'm pissed and I needed to vent. Thanks for listening.

Be patient. He'll pay you. He isn't done playing you yet.
 
I would say a good general rule of thumb is this:

If the stakes are getting higher than normally passes hands betwix you two, pause the action until he pays up. A good point would have at the $40 or $50 mark. Let him know that you'll give him a half hour to come back, and then you'll start up with someone else.

Personally, if it had been me, I would have started another game with someone else after he was gone for an hour. Come on, dude.. At that point, you know he's taking his time...

Then again, maybe we have a whole different idea about "ATMs". I never played "ATMs" per se unless they begged me to play. I was always playing somebody equal to, or a little better than myself.

He just got arrested, and could possibly go to prision. I say cut the guy a break and call it even stephen.

You're lucky. Once I got this kid down 80 bucks and had to take his cuetec. I think he came back because it disappeared a month later. Another time I didn't miss a ball the first 3 games in the first set and the guy never returns from the john. I've been kicked out of the bar countless times mid-set because the bartender wanted to go home early. I tip them well when I win too. They get 10% of my winnings minimum and if I keep them past last call they get like 25%. The worst one happened when we posted and I went to take a piss. Came back, the money's gone ($200), he's gone and he even took the quarters marking the score. Retarded ass doorman probably got 20 bucks to act ignorant. He got fired a couple weeks later for pissing off more of the regulars. I got a knife pulled on me once over 10 bucks. He waited like 3 hours in the parking lot for me. Apparently I hustled him when he was the one who asked for the 1 ball. Am I supposed to tell him that wasn't gonna help him at all? Anyway, I'm not getting stabbed over 10 dollars, he got his money back. Now that I think about it, I should stop gambling. Then I may as well stop playing pool if I didn't play for money.

HAHA that wouldn't be a bad idea. I would have told the cops to let me go for a minute because I owed money. But that's just me.
 
There was a kid I knew and trusted, he wanted to play with me for 5 bucks a game. After an hour or so I up 15-20 games on him. By the way he was acting, I kinda figured he was firing an air barrel at me, but kept playing cause it really didnt matter to me. Hes nervous as all get out, and goes to the front desk to cash a check. To make a long story short, he only had like 60 bucks on him, and the desk guy wouldnt cash his checks....... so I overhear the conversation and get a bit of a laugh out of it. He comes back and wants to bump the bet, figuring he can get even.
I tell him no, and ask if he wants to keep playing.... all the while I am expecting him to fess up to his financial error. He agrees to keep on playing. So I figure what the hell, let the kid keep some face. I dump till Im up like 60 bucks on him, and then I explain Im tired and am leaving so he should pay up now. You should have seen the relief on his face that he was square, but there was a glimmer in his eye that he thought he was really doing something there..... :D

did not get arrested, just didn't have the money. I won a $100 off a guy, $50 a set, he paid me. Got him another $150 stuck, and he said he had to run to the QuikTrip caddie corner to get some more money, and he never came back. Now, I don't see him except by accident, about 3 times in 3 years, and he has paid me $50 more, and still owes me a $100.

So, if you don't want to waiting FOREVER on your money, post up in the future. We all learn this lesson, however small it may be.

Dude, this is one of the funniest stories I have heard in a long time. You didn't get stiffed - the cops stole your action. Now you have to wait until the state gets paid before you can can get your money. Just hold on to his cue, he'll be back.

Yeah yeah I know I know...But it just gets so hard to ask when it's time to. The last thing I want to do is offend my action and then I don't have anyone to play. I've probably taken 200-300 off this guy in $20 increments and somehow, I'm the best friend he has in that place. So me asking him to post is like his best friend showing no faith. I don't know if he got arrested or not, but I hope he did. I have his wife's phone number (long story). I guess I could call her and ask.

You got stiffed...plain and simple. Do you really believe he would call the pool hall from jail, just to let you (someone he owes money to) know why he disappeared? If he had been arrested he would be calling someone he DIDN'T owe.
