GPPA League by Mike Sigel: $250,000 first prize and $1 million guaranteed

...
Key points:
1. The Sigel Handicap System is the most fair system ever created and allows almost anyone to compete on an equal level regardless of previous experience. ...

So the league "allows almost anyone to compete on an equal level..." I'd be interested in understanding why such a league would be of interest to anyone who really enjoys competing at pool. Is it just to socialize? Is it just a fun night out? Is it that any form of pool is better than alternative uses of your time? Is it better than a coin-flipping league? Why would any good pool players join?

Maybe for that ----> "$250,000 first prize"

I was just going to edit my post to say something about buying a lottery ticket on the big prize, but now I don't need to. I wonder if the odds will be better than in other lotteries.

I won't be at Champions until Thursday. If Mike is still in town I will ask him about the escrow and let you know. I think he will be there but he is leaving shortly to do some exhibitions and promote the league in the New England area. If I don't catch him before he leaves I will shoot him an email and try to find out for you.

I'm in the NE area, have not heard that Sigel was coming here. You know where/when he is going?

I think their goal is to replace the APA as the main league in the country. The only way to get people to leave the APA, though, is to dangle a great big carrot.

Personally, the money doesn't interest me very much (I was dropped on my head as a child) and I like my NAPA league a lot so I won't be playing in the GPPA if it comes to town.

Recently, I purchased the final day of the Accu-Stats coverage of the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship. Though I really enjoyed sweating the players I have come to know from past events, by the end of the day, spending all those hours in front of a computer, I was literally exhausted. I don't think I would want to spend another day of my life sitting in front of a computer. Maybe it's because I use the computer for my job, but, man, watching pool in a computer, it sure did wear me out. LOL

I think playing pool, being in the pool room, watching players up front and close, that never seemed to tire me. There was always something new and exciting happening.

I do miss the camaraderie of interacting with other pool peeps, and that is what I think a league offers.

Understanding the thoughts of others how this is just another curveball being thrown at the gullible and unsuspecting pool public, I believe Mike Sigel has the expertise and knowledge base to make this league work.

We may have to take a ride on the Reading and check out this GPPA. :)

OK I went to their page and read the whole rules and league description. Although I'm personally not a fan of those rules, I can see them attracting lots and lots of potential players. IMO it's even more "evened out" in terms of skill than the APA, but since this is a league for masses of casuals (I came to that conclusion after reading all the info) it's a great thing. Now if APA and GPPA could both grow side by side, together they could promote pool and gain thousands of new players. That is something pool desperately needs right now, and we should all be thankful to Mike Sigel for helping this sport out a lot. I can only hope one of those leagues (or both) one day decides to spread to Europe as well :)

His GPPA website is under construction, but there is some info on it ---> gppaleague.com :)

Timing is everything. Pool needs something like this right now in America. $250,000 first prize. Wow!

In-house leagues

I live in a town with 30K people and no poolrooms but I can play in leagues (APA, NAPA, and an in-house) 4 nights a week if I wanted to. With the exception of the money (which is substantial, I admit), I don't see what "need" is being filled.

Please wait while we pause this thread for a hijack alert.

JAM, hope you noticed this in the TAR contest thread, fits in well about your computer use you just talked about.

This was the end of the hijack alert, we now return you to the regularly scheduled thread.

Website says league starts April 1, 2014.

When does the league session end?

When are the league finals in Vega$?

What hotel in Vega$ is going to host the league finals?

Thanks in advance Wedge for finding out these answers.

So far Mike Sigel's answers have been just like Bonus Ball --- we have a major surety company, we have a big time sponsor, we have a Vega$ hotel, we have $1,000,000 in prizes.
All vague, granderous but ultimately empty.

Ken...You can talk about me all you want...but start insulting my wife, and I promise you won't like it.

No I am insulting you...

I was teasing about your wife being your cousin. To me it was hillbilly humor. If it offended I appoligize, I thought you could understand and take a joke. If you cant, Im sorry.

April 1st, eh? Well I don't want to spoil what might be the biggest prank in pool history... :D

Seriously though, your last section is why I can't give any form of support. That doesn't mean I'm hoping it fails or plan to sabotage the league. $250,000 guaranteed for something that hasn't even started yet is aiming too high in my opinion. It's one of the biggest faults of most promoters. Always going for the deep pass, when they only need 5 yards to pick up the first down.

The Sigel Handicap System is the most fair system ever created and allows almost anyone to compete on an equal level regardless of previous experience.
This is what the APA should be saying, not "everyone can play and anyone can win".....or whatever it is. As long as there is a handicap system people will abuse it, in some form or another. Some systems are obviously better than others and this one may be better than most, time will tell. I havent read every post but the one about the APA and sandbagging where no one does it was interesting. If that is true then the league operator needs to take over the govt and oust all the "sandbagging" senators, congressmen...etc. That is indeed a huge statement and if its a fact, I would lay a doughnut to a biscuit that its the only one in the country. I know guys who play off handed during the "dump" season or non-qualifying matches and no one can tell it. I have seen guys who play strong shortstop speed look like legitimate skill level 4s or 5s when they want to. Who knows, maybe all 700 are sandbagging.....;)

Billiards finally found a category we can lead other games in

Wow, Billiards finally found a category we can lead other games in . ;) We're #1 .... We're #1....We're #1.....

Sandbagging

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Look up sandbagging in Wiktionary, the free dictionary.
Sandbagging, hiding the strength, skill or difficulty of something or someone early in an engagement, may refer to:

Sandbagging in billiards and other games, deliberately playing below one's actual ability in order to fool opponents into accepting higher stakes bets, or to lower one's competitive rating in order to play in a future event with a higher handicap and consequently have a better chance to win; the term has spread to chess, go and other such games

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EOed0D53xp8
Sandbagging (golfing), playing poorly until establishing a handicap and then raising bets, using the established handicap to gain advantage.
Sandbagging (racing), deliberately qualifying slower than what the car can actually perform

Sandbagging (grappling), competing in a skill-bracket or being ranked lower than one is deemed capable of
Sandbagging (law), suing for a breach of a contractual representation or warranty despite having known at the time of the contract that it was untrue

The basic need of this sport. Making it popular, bringing in new players, promoting both competition and socialization at the pool tables, making those competitions easily accessible to anyone, and ultimately focusing the money and the industry on the masses. With guys like Mike and Paul pool still has chances of growing today.

Nice, I am pretty close to the Jillians and will be there for sure. Although I have 0 interest in the league, I do have a signature cue I'd love him to sign for my son.
