I was wondering if anybody had any idea what happened between these gentleman. It was at the Legends of One Pocket in Olathe,KS the year Grady won it. It was several years ago. The story i got was that grady was putting up all of his OWN money and lost a big set to Parica and Jose remarked only one set?? I heard that Grady hit him with his cuestick and then had to be restrained. Anybody know the real story. On a side note: If it went down like that i actually don't blame Grady.

Clint3612,
I will not speak for Grady, but because he is my friend, I feel I must correct one thing here. Grady did NOT hit him with any foreign object.
The man works out every day and does not need a stick to beat (no pun intended) somebody that much smaller than himself. Even though it's an innocent question, merely posting something like that can get an idea into someone's mind that is not true. Grady is a much better person than that.

He has a blog and an e-mail address that is posted in lots of places. Maybe that's the better and more prudent way to ask such a provocative question.

Anyway, they are all patched up and all is well between them.

Terry, can you tell us the true story behind the incident?
That's one way to clear Grady's good name on the net.

There is no way in the world...make that UNIVERSE, that I am going to speak for Grady. I probably should not have even addressed this, but he's not here to stop this in its tracks.

I'm not even going to peek back at this thread. I'm like the German dude in Hogan's Heros...I know nothing.

Hey Terry, a correction . . .

I think I would put my money on Parica. I heard he was a golden gloves boxer (not certain that is true). I do know he went to jail once for battering someone who insulted his wife. Plus he comes up to Grady's waist and one well delivered blow at that height and the fight is over.

i'm not trying to start any problems. It's not like pool players haven't gotten physical before. I was hoping Grady himself would explain the incident himself.

Was at the tournament. Grady and Jose was matched up in a race to five for $$$$$ in side action. Jose won the first set, Grady won the second and then Jose won the next two sets. I had went up to eat when they got into it so I didn't see what happened. It wasn't much of a fight as Grady hit Jose only once I heard before it was broke up. Anyway Grady came and sat down at the next table where I was sitting and I heard him say that what had made him mad was he had just dropped 10 large and had asked Jose for 600 that he said Jose had owed him for some time. Jose had refused either to pay or claimed he didn't owe him when Grady had smacked him. I went down and Jose was sitting in a chair with an ice pack to the side of his face, so I believe Grady had hit him with his fist. The funny thing was that Grady and Jose had to play each other in the next tournament match.

I've always admired Grady, he has done so much for this sport that goes un- noticed, and has yet to received the recognition he so deserves. If in fact he did stiff arm Jose for trying to stiff him, its just one more reason why i love this guy. Deadbeats that dont pay their debts deserve to be bit-h slapped. And for you who are waiting for Grady to respond so you can flame him, BACK OFF:mad:
He is a great asset to this forum and has forgotten more than most of us will ever know:eek:

I was also at the tournament, Shooters is the room I play in, and I was sitting watching the gambling set and the episode as it unfolded. OVER THE HILL`s comments above are accurate. Grady lost the gambling and said he was going to deduct funds from the payment that Jose had owed him for quite some time. Jose said that would not work, his backers wanted paid for the match he had just won. Grady was frustrated, and the episode occurred and was over quickly. For those who know Shooters, they were playing on table 10, in the corner.

It's not particularly hard for me to believe Jose stiffed him. He's always seemed just a tad bit more arrogant than your average champion.

I mean, for gawd's sakes.. The man insists he plays better than Efren!! :D :D :D

I really like Grady..i love his comentary on my accustats tapes..and i hear he is a hell of a one pocket player..but if some one has record..could you post his accomplishments..major tournaments...etc I would love to know..thanks And Grady..you better slow down ..you shouldnt be throwing your hands at your age...your liable to hurt something..heheheh:D

All in jokes..but to be honest the hardest i have ever been hit was by a 69 year old man..my uncle..i was messing with him one day while he was drunk..he was sitting on his porch...sloshed...i was slap boxing at him telling him he was old and slow..he told me "Tony....im drunk...boy stop fu*&ing with me for I slap the sh*&* out of you big azz" i told him come on Uncle Tat ..try it..you cant lay a hand on me....about that time ...from the side of left eye ...i just caught the blur of his hand before he smaked fire out of my azz...he hit me so hard i bet sparks flew from the side of my head..he hit me on the ear....the blow was so hard that it threw my equalibrum off and i stumbbled over the porch furniture and fell on the ground..he just laughed and said "I told your big azz to stop...now pic your azz up and go get me another beer out the fridge"

Here are some of his great accomplishments.

He is a legendary gambler and professional pool player, and is four-time World One Pocket Champion. Grady has promoted nineteen tournaments and eleven instructional tapes, and has written two books. He has commented on ESPN and The Billiard Channel, and writes a monthly article for Inside Pool Magazine. The Professor was recently inducted into the One-pocket Hall of Fame, and starred in The Color of Money with Paul Newman and Tom Cruise

Grady should had made some stipulations prior to their match. Can't blame Parica for not paying up yet since he his backers are somewhat deducted his winnings already and Grady didn't mention that credit thing beforehand. still, not a good sport on Grady's behalf. by the way, as of this moment, does Parica still owe Grady some money or did he already paid up?

Maybe I've just played in different poolrooms than most on here, but if someone owed me $600 (which would never happen) I wouldn't be playing them again until I got paid. As far as the statement "My bankers need all their money" He had a percentage of the money coming to him from the win. He should have paid Grady out of that. It's like busting a guy in a crap game or card game and loaning him money to get back in the game to beat you. Put the damn money on the light. Johnnyt

I heard this same version of the story from someone that was playing on the table next to Grady and Jose.

hope this was a big poolroom. If this thead gets any biggr with people that were there that day...it's gonna get crowded. :D Johnnyt

Its always wrong to hit the other player when you lose regardless of the excuse.

If there is a preexisting debt disputed or not, thats another issue completely. I would assume that was addressed in some fashion before they played or I expect they would not have played. Its always bad form, and not bright, to play someone that owes you that much money, unless you have made such an arrangement or are willing to let the debt ride until later.

I was there that day. OK, I wasn't actually there, I was at the movies, but I 'feel' like I was there.
Grady is noone to be toyed with. Arguing with Grady is fraught with peril. Grady is a dangerous person, truly he is.

( Anyway, I suspect that he spent his mis-guided youth on the "Group W" bench )
:)

And I went up there, I said, "Shrink, I want to kill. I mean, I wanna, I
wanna kill. Kill. I wanna, I wanna see, I wanna see blood and gore and
guts and veins in my teeth. Eat dead burnt bodies. I mean kill, Kill,
KILL, KILL." And I started jumpin up and down yelling, "KILL, KILL," and
he started jumpin up and down with me and we was both jumping up and down
yelling, "KILL, KILL." And the sargent came over, pinned a medal on me,
sent me down the hall, said, "You're our boy."

He said, "Kid, we only got one question. Have you ever been arrested?"

And I proceeded to tell him the story of the Alice's Restaurant Massacre,
with full orchestration and five part harmony and stuff like that and all
the phenome... - and he stopped me right there and said, "Kid, did you ever
go to court?"

And I proceeded to tell him the story of the twenty seven eight-by-ten
colour glossy pictures with the circles and arrows and the paragraph on
the back of each one, and he stopped me right there and said, "Kid, I want
you to go and sit down on that bench that says Group W .... NOW kid!!"

And I, I walked over to the, to the bench there, and there is, Group W's
where they put you if you may not be moral enough to join the army after
committing your special crime, and there was all kinds of mean nasty ugly
looking people on the bench there. Mother rapers. Father stabbers. Father
rapers! Father rapers sitting right there on the bench next to me! And
they was mean and nasty and ugly and horrible crime-type guys sitting on the
bench next to me. And the meanest, ugliest, nastiest one, the meanest
father raper of them all, was coming over to me and he was mean 'n' ugly
'n' nasty 'n' horrible and all kind of things and he sat down next to me
and said, "Kid, whad'ya get?" I said, "I didn't get nothing, I had to pay
$50 and pick up the garbage." He said, "What were you arrested for, kid?"
And I said, "Littering." And they all moved away from me on the bench till I
said, "And creating a nuisance." And they all came back, shook my hand,
and we had a great time on the bench, talkin about crime, mother stabbing,
father raping, all kinds of groovy things that we was talking about on the
GROUP W bench.
