GRIP QUESTION

I've never heard anyone say Mosconi had a crooked stroke before. When he was in his later years he developed a kind of body language that caused the tip to veer at the end of the follow through. Maybe that's what you are referring to.
maybe it was just in his old agebut he had pretty much same cue action as anold willie hoppe. their hand would come away on the backswing and then come back in coming thru making his tip move left to right. check out just about any medium speed and above shot with a down the line camera angle on youtube. it isn't subtle.

here is a short 15ball exhibition run by Willie. It is harder yo find straight strokes than crooked ones. And he goes left a lot here too. I was thinking he was just using backhand english but the 8ball in the side is def a center ball shot and u can pause in his backsing and follow thru to see just how crooked that delivery is.

Well I guess neither of us saw him in his prime so who knows. I think maybe I reacted to the word "crooked." I don't think that is the best word for what he is doing.

K I will bite...
Hoppe, Mosconi, Bustamante, Earl (Trump too if you include snooker guys) ... some of the best players ever have visibly crooked strokes. Well Earl's isn't so obvious, but he talks about his arc that has a bias to the right in his commentary. He mistakenly attributes this stroke bias to all righties, claiming lefties will have a left side bias. For long stroking 'swingers' like Earl, this is true. But certainly not for orthodox methods of cue delivery.

edit: on the women's side, Chou Cheih Yu is pretty damn crooked on her stroke shots.
you should add Bob Jewett to your list
his stroke is not straight but boy can he get great results with it !!!!!

i mean it isnt str8. what word is better?
but i do agrer cuzhe def doesntplay an arc like Busty. his comes away at the back, falls back in, and then goes thru str8 on some of theclearer down the line ones iveseen. that 8ball shot included.

but prime willie mighta been laserstr8. just cantknow. old men in suit jackets poppin balls in at an exhibition isnt exactly a valid technique breakdown vid sample lol. but he makes it work and had excellent control with that too.

I think we're talking about the grip -- how closed the grip hand is. Some players have a grip so loose that there is daylight (gap) around it. The orthodox advice is to not have a gap and to not change the shape of the hand at least for the part that provides the grip -- thumb and finger(s).
You wanna see a Gap, Billy Thorpe.

yep. and he proving Corey right on that lateral movement.... I started watching Billy's match vs Melling from the MC and u can add him to the list of guys with a crooked stroke. He swerves right by a lot.

my fav gap grip player with the most unique grip I ever saw is Santos Sambajon Jr. Im not sure how his grip changed over the years but late 90s early 2000s Sambajon Jr. had what looked like a snug n secure grip only in the fingers with a big gap. Never seen another player's hand on the cue quite like his.
