Thanks for posting. This is exactly what I wanted to see. Sigel plays Hohmann in his first match. I guess we should find out if he is ready or not.

Group 5 is probably the toughest flight in the full three years of this tournament.

- Steve

Steve, or anyone who may know. I'm trying to find out when the evening sessions will start on Friday night, and about how long they go. My wife and I may be able to drive out and stay a night if the session doesn't start too early.

It's gonna take 3 hrs and we cant get started till 4pm. I'm hoping it is somethingl like 7 to midnight.

thanks for any info known.

The Friday evening matches are scheduled to start at 5:30 and 8pm if the DP website is correct. Hope that helps.

I can't seem to find the live feed for this event. Does anyone know where it is?

If I can't find it, I'll just go back to watching the plethora of regional tour events and humble gambling matches I get to watch every day from all around the country...surely something of this stature (it is a World Championship after all) would have a live feed or is being recorded in some manner?!?!?

Someone wouldn't drop the ball that bad would they?

I'm impressed by the dedication of some of the 14.1 fans here. Flying in or driving more than an hour or two is more than I would have done. And I thought I was a fan.

You're right about that. I also like that Steve and Chris both post on this thread the day before they play in the actual event being discussed!

I agree group 5 is as tough as it gets. While there are some lesser known players in the event, there are a few top players in every group. You've got to play great just to be in your group's top half! Good luck Steve and Chris! And best of luck to Ed Deska and Mike Davis - Maryland rivals in Group 7 playing Tuesday at 6:00.

Andy

My pick for the players that I believe will proceed from each group. (Names in red). Some groups I don't know the level of all the players, so hard to pick all 4...

How does Danny Barouty have a match at !0:00 and 10:30 tomorrow? He plays Harriman and Hofstader. I knew he was good, but wow.

OK, taking a shot at guessing the four survivors of round robin play from each group.

Group 1
Oliver Ortmann GER
Allen Hopkins USA
Yu Ram Cha KOR
Mike Dechaine USA
Bernie Pettipiece USA
Bob Chamberlain USA
Bill Maropolous USA
Peter Burrows USA

Ortmann should go 7-0 in this group. Hopkins, Cha, and Dechaine are my other three picks.

Group 2
Thorsten Hohmann GER
Mike Sigel USA
Jonathan Fulcher SCO
Charlie Williams USA pd by DP
Stevie Moore USA
Jim Gottier USA
Devon Cataldi USA

Hohmann, Williams, Moore and Gottier are my picks here.

Group 3
Huidji See NED
John Schmidt USA
Dominic Jentsch GER
Shaun Wilkie USA
Mark Vidal SPN
Jimmy Mendoza USA
Dan Heidrich USA USA
David Daya USA

See and Schmidt, second and fifth respectively last year, are obvious picks, but after that it's no clear. I'll go with Mendoza and Jentsch.

Group 4
Danny Harriman USA
Niels Feijen NED
Danny Barouty USA
Gerda Hofstatter AUT
Bob Maidhof USA
Chris Lynch USA
Mark Snodgrass USA
Stefan Cohen FRA pd by pred

Wow, this group is tough! Harriman, with two consecutive top fives in this event, multi-winner of the european straight pool champinships Feijen, and Barouty, who beat Hohmann on the way to finsihing ninth last year, should all get through. Maidhof won a qualifier to get here by beating Barouty in the finals, so he seems the logical pick to advance, but he'll be tested.

Group 5
Martin Kempter AUT
Ralf Souquet GER
Tony Robles USA
Francisco Bustamante PHI
Vincent Facquet FRA
Dan Wallace USA
Dennis Hatch USA
Jonathan Smith USA

The group of death, much harder than all the others, should provide some great drama, and, due to its depth, some very skillful players will fail to make it past the round robin stage. Souquet and Robles are my first two picks. I think Hatch will have a good event, and he is my third pick. Kempter is a little hard to gauge. He looked so good on the way to the final day last year, but played horribly when he got there, with several weaknesses exposed in the semifinal against Huidji See. I say he'll stumble and my fourth pick is Jonathan Smith.

Group 6
Thomas Engert GER #6 seed
Raj Hundal IND #11 seed
Corey Deuel USA
Nick Van Denberg (NED)
Sebastian Staab GER owed by maurice
Liz Ford USA
Tom Parisian USA
Shin Young Park KOR

Engert is an established world beater and VanDen Berg impressed me a lot last year, so I'll make them my first two picks. I'll take a shot with Staab and Deuel as my other two picks.

Group 7
Mika Immonen FIN #7 seed
Bobby Hunter USA #10 seed
Konstantin Stepanov (RUS)
Mike Davis USA
Ed Deska USA
Mark Ritter USA
Michael Yednak USA
Bob M. Cozzolino USA

Immonen and Hunter seem bvious picks here, and Eurotour star Stepanov should get through, as well. Mike Davis, who failed to get through the round robin ayear ago, should bounce back and make it through ths year.

Group 8
Johnny Archer USA #8 seed
Jasmin Ouschan AUT #9 seed
Radoslaw Babica (POL)
Tony Rodriguez USA
Calvin Coker USA
Mohammed Hakim NED
Steve Lipsky USA
Steve Lillis USA

Archer, Ouschan, Babica and Lipsky seem obvious picks here.

Well, that's how I see it. Let the games begin.

My picks:

1: Ortmann, Hopkins, Dechaine, Chamberlain
2: Hohmann, Sigel, Williams, Moore
3: See, Schmidt, Wilkie, Heidrich
4: Harriman, Feijen, Barouty, Maidhof
5: Kempter, Souquet, Robles, Bustamante
6: Engert, Hundal, Van Denberg, Deuel
7: Immonen, Hunter, Davis, Deska
8: Archer Ouschan, Babica, Lipsky

Group 4 & 5 are tough groups as far as I can see and group 8, aint too far behind either :)

My picks are;-

1. Ortman, Hopkins, Chamberlain, Burrows

2. Hohmann, Sigel, Moore, Williams/Gottier

3. See, Schmidt, Wilkie, Jentsch (I have a feeling that Jentsch will put up quite a hell of a tournament, after all, the German's are very adept at straight pool and I have a feeling that this guy won't be any different either)

4. Harriman, Feijen, Barouty, Lynch.

5. Souquet, Robles, Bustamante, Hatch (This is a nightmare group to pick the last 2 qualifiers from the RR stage)

6. Engert, Van Den Berg, Deuel, Staab.

7. Immonen, Hunter, Stepanov, Davis.

8. Archer, Ouschan, Babica, Lipsky.

This is definitely a high end group of players this year, good luck to everyone who is competeing in the event

I would love to be shooting in this tournament.... If I had the bankroll to play, that is :(

I'll give this a shot:

Thorsten Hohmann GER
Mike Sigel USA
Jonathan Fulcher SCO

Stevie Moore USA

Group 3

beware the Orange crush! NVDB in form, Niels always dangerous and See will be motivated to improve last years result! Mo Hakim knows the game well and plays with a lot of intensity. if he doesn't overdo it, he'll tackle a couple of big guns.

Hi Alex,

Wish I could see you in the field of the tournament, you belong in there!

I wouldn't be surprised if either Niels or Nick brings the title home to the Netherlands. They are both great 14-1 players.

Over the past few years, this is the toughest field I have seen.

Here are some of my picks -

I know most of the players very well and my attention is on Niels Feijen. He has an impressive resume of accomplishments - but no world championship in any discipline. He has been knocking at the door for about 8-9 years now, and I believe he will be a major force in this tournament - and I hope he wins this. He works so hard on his game and he has such a strong mental focus - this could be his year.

I never count out Toastie - he loves straight pool and he is back in top form physically and mentally - I believe that the move back to J'ville has put everything back into perspective for Thorsten. He has been working very hard with his coach back in Germany and he is getting that look that he had in his eyes back in 2003-2006. As always the road to the World Championship goes through Thorsten Hohmann and it won't be easy.

The American players - Sigel, Harriman, Schmidt, Hopkins, Robles - they are all phenomenally strong. I like guys like Deska, Maidhof, Hatch, Barouty, and Hunter. Many consider them long shots to win this, but they are just as strong as the others and can catch a lot of players in this international field by surprise if they are underestimated.

Either way, this will be a great event - I hope that somehow they are able to capture some of it on video.

thanks, i will be playing this thing someday, i love the game. i started out by watching Mike Sigel run 150-and-out about 50 times. his patterns are very easy to discern wich makes it easy to learn from.

i'm sure the trophy will come to Holland, this year or in the near future. we (niels, nick, rico and i) used to practice a lot of straight-pool and organise 4-man tournaments, winner take-all. in the Bootcamps with the Dutch team we mostly play straightpool. because it's a good practice for your fundamentals, your concentration and being the first disciplin in the European Championships. to draw first blood and make a statement to the rest of the field for the rest of the tournament.

in the EC's they didn't do well this year, i'm convinced that they will do well in New J and score heavily.

No updates?

Wasn't it last year that we had live updates of the action?? Seems like we are going backwards.

For DP to promote the tourney so heavily, yet no have someone to sit there and punch in the scores....
