Not 1 or 2 times, but 5 time pool player of the year! Non other than the 12 time world champion, Buddy Hall. It stated pool player of the year!!! Now think about that fact! Can you think of anyone else that can match these stats? Even the non playing pool people like Buddy Hall!

What is with your recent infatuation with all things Buddy Hall?

Hello MSchaffer,
This is the first post I saw from you in any of my threads! I started studying things about Buddy Hall and a few other players is all. And Buddy is a great guy! I like his style of playing pool. Is there a problem? And he is a friend. I talk to him often! Why is it when you post something good about someone, something is wrong? I do not wait until a person is gone for good and then say good things about them. I do it while they are alive!!!
Many Regards,

For the sake of simplicity, I'll restrict my comments to American pro pool.

There is nobody who posts here who won't quickly concede that Buddy Hall is on the short list of the best nine ball players of all time. We've often struggled to separate the likes of Mike Sigel, Buddy Hall, Earl Strickland, Johnny Archer and Luther Lassiter when it comes to the identification of the best American nine baller ever, and Van Boening may soon belong in the conversation (if he doesn't already belong).

If your intent is to remind us, with nostalgia, of what a phenomenal player Buddy Hall was, right on brother. If, alternatively, your intent is to suggest that Buddy Hall is head and shoulders above the rest, I'd have to say that I strongly disagree.

The competitive resumes of many are simply mind-blowing. For example, Nick Varner is a world champion in nine ball, eight ball, one pocket, bank pool, and straight pool. Lassiter won the Johnston City all around in three consecutive years, in the presence of dozens of future BCA Hall of Famers. And, of course, there's Mosconi, whose domination of the sport is legendary, and who is rightfully considered the greatest American pool player ever by many.

Nice post that rightfully celebrates one of pool's greatest ever champions, but if the intent is to place Buddy Hall on a pedestal above the likes of Mosconi, Sigel, Varner, Strickland, Archer and Lassiter, I'm not buying it.

An excellent; well thought out, well written, and spot on post! Agree 100%!

None of which diminishes Buddy's accomplishments.

I wish someone would champion the cause of some of the other players mentioned like Lock does for Buddy.

I personally love hearing about all these guys and what they did.

yep

So many people bash and here lock is gettin bashed for saying good things . I got something else to say about lock but I will say it in a thread I am about to start .

Hello Sjm,
I am simply giving credit due to a good guy that plays great pool! All is good with my thread. I thank you for your good post. Buddy, and Varner hang together as of late, sometimes. of course now non of the pool players I know have 12 world championships under their belts. I know Johnny Archer good, and several other top players. I play in Johnny Archer's pool hall a lot and stayed there in Atlanta, Georgia for 3 years. Marietta, Georgia. Marietta Billiards Club. We have watch each other play. Thanks again..

He's not getting bashed for saying good things, he's getting bashed for his enthusiasm which is bordering on cult freakishness lately. This behavior makes people edgy whether it's Buddy Hall or L. Ron Hubbard.

Yeah, Buddy and Nick made some nice DVDs recently and I purchased the one they made about one pocket. Well worth the money.

Sounds like we're similarly nostalgic about the greats. I consider myself lucky to have been closely following the tournament trail since 1976, and to have seen live virtually every great player since Lassiter.

Buddy may well have been the greatest pattern player ever in nine ball. You are right to celebrate his career and to value him as a friend, but you should also count him as of those who has increased our collective understanding of the game. His technical excellence showed the way for the likes of Souquet and Orcullo, who are on the short list of today's most skilled and precise pattern players.

Hope I have the pleasure of meeting you one of these days. Will you be at the Riviera next month? If so, let's find a way to introduce ourselves to each other.

Buddy's best Buddy

I agree with jc. Also when reporting, you might want to consider there are a few people on here who see your "friend" almost daily. Thats the last time i'll comment about this matter.

Illinois is only one state, there are a lot of other places and cities that do not see my friend everyday. I understand what you mean though. We have some stars in music here and I see them everyday so they are not so big to me. And besides, of all my pool playing friends, Buddy Hall was the only one who said I could write what I wanted to about him on the Internet!
Question for you, do have a mentor or roll model person that you like? Buddy Hall is my roll model!!! Period. And my friend.

Hey brother LOCK,I KNOW EXACTLY WHERE YOU R COMING FROM,(CIGAR)TOM VANOVER,a life long friend of mine and the best 9ball player ever in maryland(won 9straight maryland state championships all arounds, in the 70s threw the 80s)so i talk about him every chance i get,i must of started atlease 10 threads about him, when u can play 15 hours against STRICKLAND and break even(in the 80s)u can flat out play, plus all the other great players that TOM beat ,CIGAR TOM never refused to play anybody when they came to baltimore and he beat almost everyone that he played,LOCK ask BUDDY HALL about CIGAR TOM VANOVER he will know who u are talking about, take care my great friend!

Here's how I see it, there is no "greatest ever". Awards mean nothing. Anyone of them could match up with the other and win or lose, it's as simple as that. Let us all agree that they are all fantastic in their own way.

Now, as for personal feelings, as a person, I just like Buddy Hall. The few times I've had the pleasure of being in his presence were great. He was friendly and played some great pool. I personally like his stroke over anyone else I've ever seen. When Buddy strokes the ball it's almost as if he's just tapping at it, and gets monster action. God bless that stroke. I try to emulate his stroke but I'm well aware that I fall short.

MULLY

the few times I've been around Earl he as a complete gentleman and as friendly as could be. I can easily dismiss his antics because of that. Earl is top shelf in my book.

I have no problem hearing about Buddy or any other of the greats, over and over, and believe we're fortunate that someone as close to him as Mr. Lock is can let us know the truth, as he sees it. I appreciate that. That's part of what this forum is about. I have a friend that learned to play in Shreveport years back, in the same hall that Buddy played in. They became friends and he learned to copy, or come very close to, Buddy's stroke. As Mullyman says, "When Buddy strokes the ball it's almost as if he's just tapping at it, and gets monster action. God bless that stroke. I try to emulate his stroke but I'm well aware that I fall short." I try to do that when I shoot with my friend, when he's in town, and cannot come close either. Amazing stroke. And thanks for your good nature Mr. L&L, very rare and refreshing around here.

Lock, that's why you're our CEO...:yeah:

..PAY YOUR RESPECTS TO THE LIVING...

But I do have a problem with video lessons...people talk about how to stand and aim 'n' such....but not enough about how to clean somebody's
clock...after all, pool is a war game, like chess.
Hang on!....I think someBuddy has done it...

Thanks double hemlock,
I have that video saved already. See how we think alike! All you have to do is say something good about someone and people jump all over you. A pool player died a couple of weeks ago that was a great player, now everyone wants to write about him! He can't read the write ups now. God bless his soul.

Did you notice how Buddy's stroke made the cue roll slow and right to the point! Clock system. Thanks again, double hemlock.

Hello, Mr. HeadLock,
I appreciate your nice words about me. I am glad you like my post about Buddy. Sorry you can't copy his stroke though. take care!

Two posts about his friend Buddy and that borders on cult freakishness?

Apparently some people haven't opened up an aiming thread lately.

LL starts some pretty interesting threads and that keeps the board lively. If a person doesn't like what they read or the person that starts a thread, don't participate in it.
