So I was playing in a team tournament over the weekend and this situation came up. It was the first game of this match. It started about 10 pm. I am playing against another player that was a little intoxicated. I broke and made a few then played safe. He was able to jump and make a ball. He makes a couple more and then as he is lining up another shot he is cueing very close to the cue ball and he taps the cue ball forward about 2 inches. Before he does anything else I say foul loud enough for him to hear but he just continues with his shot anyway. He misses the shot and I say foul and he says yeah sure. It was an obvious foul so I didn't even fathom that he might have not been serious when he said yeah sure. I proceed to pick up the cue ball. He then gets irate almost instantly and starts in on me. He gets right in my face and tells me about how he has been playing for 15 years and he knows that he did not foul. He asks me what he did and I explain it to him and he is livid saying that there is no way that happened.
Eventually his team pulls him back to their area and I am about to take my first shot when he stands up again and stands right next to the table just chirping it up about how if I want to win like that then whatever. Each time he opens his mouth I casually walk over to my table and grab a drink of Coke and wait for him to stop all the while with a nice big grin on my face. This goes back and forth for a while I make a ball and he chirps. I grin and go take a drink. He backs off and I go to line up again and he starts chirping again.
Personally I did not care much that he was loud and did not think that he fouled because it was obvious. I just keep my happy grin on my face and continue to run the table out. I am about to shoot the 8 ball and at this point no matter what I do he will not stop. I just stand by my table waiting for him to go take a seat and just stop the constant berating of me as a human being and I still have the smile on my face.
Anyways my captain goes and grabs the tournament director and he comes over. The guy sees him coming and goes and sits down. I sink the 8 ball. Game over. The TD actually offers to DQ the guy because he had been watching what was going on and was just a little busy to come over. I said no dont worry about it. The other guys captain is standing right there as the TD tells me this. Anyways I said no and the TD tells the other captain that if sees anything else from that guy he is going to DQ the entire team.
The TD walks away and I talk to the other captain for a little bit. He explains that the other guy is just a little drunk and in a bad mood and I flat out told him that it is no excuse. He then tells me that he say his player foul but the game was between us so he did not want to get involved. I nearly lost it. After his player was trying to get in my face about an obvious foul that his captain saw this captain decided to do nothing.
After that point for the rest of the match I did my best to just avoid the guy I had played against. If he was playing on the table closest to me I just stood off to the side. I just don't need all that drama in my life that some people seem to invite freely into their lives. At the end of the match we won and that was what we wanted to do anyway so I guess mission accomplished. Just wondering how others might have handled it differently better/worse in that situation.
