Heart? or Stupidity?

doubling the bet puts a lot of pressure on both of you and you pulled it off. Not the smartest thing to get in to IMO but does take a lot of heart to get out off! Congrats on the win!

You saw that were probably going to lose unless you did something to change each of your mind sets. You did...it pumped you up and made the other guy nervous. You took psychological control of the set once he accepted. It's kind of like betting the river w/your 3rd straight bluff and he folded because you were finally believed :).

Did you ask yourself "What Would Dippy Do?" just before you pulled the move of the century?

Good job, john.

That's funny. I didn't really think of it but I have been this way for a long time as you well know. We had this discussion at least once about heart or stupidity and you have seen both sides in me I think - probably more of one than the other.

The pain pills I take are percocet. I take them infrequently and only when my back is really acting up. The other night I really over did it with an 8 hour session and the next day I was paying for it.

Three days later an it still hurts a lot when I bend over the table. So I took a full pill at 6pm when I thought I would be playing at 8pm - but the match didn't go off until 10:30pm so I took another half at 10pm.

I really prefer to play on the natural with no pills but the way my back is now that's practically impossible.

I was theorizing that taking that extra half was messing with my touch. In any event I don't take them to help me focus or to be "high" when I play. I just don't want to be in agony when I get down on a shot.

The only reason I felt that I was not in a good rhythm is that I recently have begun to take lessons and the main thing we have worked on so far is my stroke technique. So I am very very focused on that whereas a month ago I would be free stroking and looking like Bustamante on one shot and like Hopkins on the next.

So for some reason I really felt disconcerted when trying to dial in my stroke and my conclusion was that it was because of the one and a half pills.

I had a couple metal fragments near my spine, that caused me a great deal of pain, and the risk of removal seemed for years to out weight the pain.

But I did not like the taking the pain medication either, so a few years back I had the metal removed, and the pain was reduced and I completely stopped taking the pain medication.

Oxicontin is the same type of pain medication you are taking currently, except it is a time release version and it generally comes in higher dosage than Oxicodon ( percocet ). It may work better for you than what you are taking.

Either way, nice victory and have a great day.

2:1 on the money giving up 4 games on the wire? i don't know if that's hear or stupid but you showed some gamble i'll give you that.

I am going to go with Smart

I am just going to go with SMART. I've seen road players come into town and run into a local buzz saw but by changing the bet around when they are down come back to win the set. Pool is as much mental as it is physical. I have always looked at it as being a brilliant move myself.

BTW your PM box is full.

Thank you.

Good win . Hey John I've noticed in your post you say you have something wrong with your back , what's wrong with your back if you don't mind me asking ????

u said the guy dogged his brains out, i guess it all depends on that. i guess i think if the guy would have played good, you would have looked stupid. but he didnt. i always think layouts play such a big role too

Sounds like it was Neither.... It turned out being a smart "move". Lot's of folks would call it a shark tactic because you knew the guy well enough from past encounters to have had an idea of what would be out of his comfort zone. The only stupid thing in this was apparently him letting you get to him.

Hopefully he will reload and come back at you if he was dogging it that badly.. Would say he will be your dog until you let him off the leash. Next time he likely won't take the added bet but will dog the rest of the match because he is going to remember every shot he dogged for a long time and his psyche is gonna exact a heavy toll...

That's the beauty of the move. If they don't raise the bet they are a heartless nit and if they do take it they just changed the psychology of the match.

I would suggest not attempting it on anyone shortstop speed or higher =)

Congrats on a nice score.....

I have a bulging disk. Most days the pain is just "there" and I can function normally. Some days it seems totally gone and then I will walk too much or pick up something wrong and it comes back.

If I aggravate by carrying my daughter on my shoulders for too long or play too long then I pay the price the next day.

Well, guess what?

Here is a first - I agree with EVERYONE.

I think it was stupid to raise the bet in that spot BECAUSE I was already in a set getting essentially a 4:1 return. If he loses then I am up 8000

If he wins then I am down 2000.

But I think it was smart to change the momentum and get him sweating the bet some more.

And of course with all these things you look smart if you win and stupid if you lose. :-)

I know that giving up 4 on the wire to an even player is not a good strategy to win over time. I am sure he would happy to give me those odds and get that weight every set.

So I got really lucky that he started dogging it and didn't get more lucky rolls. And I think I did show some heart by bearing down and coming with my shots when I needed to instead of dogging it off.

I guess I had Derby fever after sweating DCC matches and talk all day. Anyway, it's always nice to book a winner. Thanks for the comments everyone.

Well is there anything they can do for your back other than pain killers ??? I know it's gotta be tough not being able to play with your daughter , btw she's very beautful john .

I can play with Jessie I just have to be careful of my movements. I think a lot of guys are in the same position as me in this regard.

Things I should do are I should are lose this gut and get limber. 20 extra pounds pulling on my ribcage and spine is not helping. I should stretch and do some inversion. Get more proper massage - the physical therapy kind and not the relaxing tantric kind.

Thank you. She is very headstrong too, has her mother's looks and my temper.

ofcourse it's not stupidity, I think its a combination of Heart + CTE, god what an invention that helped alot of people, Good for you on the win!

I dont think it was heart or stupidity. It was a winning move. You highrolled him and got him thinking about money instead of the game. Nice job! :clapping:
Chuck

John if it's a bulging disc an inversion table will do wonders just using it for 10minutes a day. Takes the compression off and lets the disc pick up nutrients and rehydrate. Just have to do some barbell exercises inverted to keep the change in BP from causing headaches and other issues. I noticed most are made in China so one should be easy to find =)
