Hey all, I'm just curious about skill levels

I know its simple to post anything you want and this is by no means a measure of any real statistic of posters here, but I'm just curious about the members skill levels.

I think it helps put things in perspective. Certainly if we were all throwing the bull around in the pool room we would have a pretty good idea how the others play. So I thought I'd pose the question. I hope for some honest replies. Thanks.

I consider myself B+

I'm somewhere between an A- and an A. My high runs in straights and 9-ball are 91 balls and six racks, respectively. In 8-ball, the most anyone has stuck around for in these parts is four racks (they bet 8-ball by the game in St. Thomas), and I don't really play one hole, but I've gone 8 and out a few times.

bad doesn't begin to describe how I play

Still maybe halfway through recovery from a major surgery and pills and muscle spasms are doing weird things. I wasn't shooting great working my way back after a twenty year layoff anyway, now I play a guy that is legally blind even up. However I have a plan. When the spot gets to 14-2 in the weekly handicapped one pocket tournament at Buffalo's I am going to run the table on somebody! :D :D :D

i shoot at a strong c level on good days. i put together a 3 pack playing 9 ball. on bad days i can't make a ball

APA level 5, which I consider C, maybe C-. Some days I play like a 2 and some days I'm a 7.:D

I honestly don't know what my skill level would be on the A-B-C-D scale.

I've only played APA leagues for seven years(6 yrs. in KS and a little over a year here in WA) and I was ranked a SL7 on my third week of play after I initially joined back in 1999, and I have held that ranking continuosly ever since, even after moving from Kansas to Tacoma, WA. When I joined a 9-ball APA league here in WA(for the first time ever in my life), I was ranked an 8.

As far as BCA here in WA(using the 10 point for a win system), I am a steady 8. Back in KS where they used a 15 point system(8 points for the win PLUS 1 point for every ball your opponent has left on the table when you win), I carried a steady 10-11 point per game average.

But everybody's judgement on the skill of another player is a purely subjective opinion based on what you do in the here-and-now and not nessessarily what you've done in the past. Like my Grampa used to say...."Even an old hog finds an acorn every now and then...." :)

I like to tell people I haven't met before I'm just learning(aren't we always?), keeping in mind......if I have a decent break I'm in danger of running out ;)

self rating

I'd guess I'm around a B. I've recently started some standardized drills and am taking a few other new approaches to my game that may boost this over then next couple months.

Just remember to put your coat on, it can be cold outside.

One reasonable way to tell what speed some AZers play at is to look at some of the contests here. The Drivermaker tournament is a skills-based competition with some posted scores. Try it out and compare yourself to the better scores by ConArtist and Cameron. Or, you could use some arbitrary non-standardized scale that everyone uses differently ... in which case I am a 7.6-B-on-a-tuesday-when-playing-9ball or a 8.1-C+-on-a-wednesday-when-playing-8ball player. What are you ?

Dave

I don't think that...

any self given rating that I or any one else states (no matter how honestly given} is valid since its all relative to the level of our respective competition as to how we can rate ourselves ! but in APA I have ranged for about 10 years now between a 6 and a 7 in Eight Ball. more mostly a strong 6 SL ,
In straight my best recent run was a honest 57 more often in the 7 to 20 range.

you have to consider that C-B-A rating is different depending where you live. B players in your area might not be the same B players in my area. The rating here goes like this:

C
B
A
AA
AAA
Semi-Pro
Pro

people tell me I'm a strong B or even an A

APA 6/7 in 8 ball over the years......enjoy 9 ball, and like to play straight when I can get a game....currently, my game is disappointing....played this weekend, couldn't string together more than 5 balls in a 9-ball rack playing on a 9ft table, although.....and I don't know if anybody esle has this.....but it seemed to be one of those days where every single rack was rough, will balls in horrible positions.....ended the day playing straight, best run was 14....not currently happy with my game...

Thanks for the replies. Yeah, I thought of a poll, but that wouldn't tell specifically each users thoughts on their skill level. The reason I thought it would be interesting is that in conversation here we can better assimilate the posters thoughts to his or her experience and skill.

Dave K asked what my level was, I have to look into that contest thing here (if an old coot like me can find it) :)

I play mostly straight pool for enjoyment although I have a younger friend (in his early 40s) who attends the "B" 9ball tourneys in our state. He tells me that I'm a very strong B. He said the ratings are plus and minus C B A and I'm a solid B+. He said some will argue if I enter that I should be an A, although I don't believe that.

I play perhaps 8hrs tops a week. My high run in straight pool is 78. My highest pressure run when behind for the money in a small stakes gambling game is 64 and out. I don't think Ive ever run more than 3 racks of nine ball, I just don't enjoy the game much.

I didn't know how else to ask the question, just thought it would be fun to have an idea. So maybe C- C C+ B- B B+ ... something like that with A+ being pro speed .. I dunno :( I'm off to find those contests. :)

edit***

Actually what specifically sparked this thought was the thread here "How do I fix this" The poster had an interesting question, and my curiosity stemmed from the posters who are trying to help. Knowing their skill levels would be useful to all. :)
