Hindu's in Lowell, Massachusetts Protest Vote to Allow Billiard Hall Next to Temple

I don't know about the local zoning laws, but apparently none were broken if the zoning board allowed it. If a law was overlooked, the lawyer would be talking about that and not reaching for stereotypes of rowdy bikers hanging out around poolhalls. If that's going to be the lawyer's argument, he should produce statistics of neighorhoods with poolhalls being menaced by bikers.

In Washington state, you can't build anything that serves alcohol next to any church or school...within 1,000 feet, so what's new about this situation?

Glen

The question indeed is...

when does money and need for revenue trump laws and rights?

Thats why I put the last paragraph in the article.

A touchy subject I know but:

Their objection that noise will disturb their meditation and that a business next to a church isn't right, just doesn't hold up, does it? Y'all need to send them down here to the South where it seems 90% of businesses that close down and the building does re-open do so as a Church, even those in strip malls!

So for those that agree with the Hindu Temple Lawyer and believe they are right please tell me:

Should any planning consent for a place of worship be turned down if it's within a certain distance of any business?

Should we not allow any place of worsjip in a strip mall because there are businesses there?

Would it be ok to say that noise from services and people arriving at a place of worship would/could impact business?

Maybe the thing to do, just for once is figure it out sensibly like grown up people. Maybe take members of the Temple to a Billiard Club in the area and show them we are not Neandarthals who ride very loud motorcycles making vast amounts of noise just to piss off people at worship.

If the "Hindu's" have a problem with the way we do business here in AMERICA, then they should pack up their s h i t and get the hell out!!! I am sick and tired of AMERICA having to bend over backwards to please every forigner that arrives at our shores! This is AMERICA, our country, not yours, if you don't like it then go back to where you came from!! The whole idea of coming to AMERICA for a lot of people is to make a better life for themselves. They need to realize that they need to change to assimilate with our culture, and our way of doing things, thats the reason most people come here to begin with, their country wont let them live there lives with the FREEDOM they desire. But as soon as they get here, they demand that our country change to meet their needs and wants. If the Hindus don't want a poolroom next to their place of worship then they have the right to move to any other place in the country they choose to, that's what makes AMERICA great!!!!

Noise from the pool hall? That's funny. I made more noise working for a catering company next to a church than I ever have in the pool hall. Of course, my drums were set up there and the owner played guitar and loved metal music, but I digress...

We used to disturb them fairly regularly but they got over it. They got their own band in there and soon were drowning us out! LOL

it's not infringing on thier right to parctice. the pool hall will not stop the temples members for worshiping. the excuse of traffic noise disturbing them is laughable, there will be traffic regardless and seriously i seen maybe ten bikes a month a pool rooms. and i'll use the old stand by, if you don't like the laws, move. at least here you are free to practice hinduism. in this economy we need more businesses that will provide jobs and tax revenue. not another tax shelter for another religion. and i'm not singling out the hindu temple. lump in the jewish temples, mosques, and my favorite (because i was raised roman catholic) the churches.

This is so full of ignorant I don't even know where to start in on it. Isn't this 2010?

I agree. I'm sick of it too. Johnnyt

Sad to say, but this what we have to look forward to in America. The Muslims are here and multiplying fast (same in Europe). They do not want to assimilate into our culture. Slowly but surely, they will try to instill their value system on the rest of us. Eventually they will make inroads into business, politics and economic institutions (already done). When they have a strong foothold, in maybe ten to twenty years, stories like this one about a pool hall will seem mundane.

You can call me a racist or whatever you want, but this is my opinion. Yesterday I went to a large water park with my grandkids and their friends. I was there to help keep an eye on the little ones when the big ones were going on the slides and stuff. As we all sat by the wave pool, a group of Muslim women entered the pool fully clothed (shawls included). Everyone else was wearing swim suits of course. The kids thought it looked funny, but even my daughter and her friend could not understand this. I did my best to explain the difference in our cultures.

I told Heather that she can expect to see more and more of this in her lifetime. And some day they may even expect it of you!

Chris, I will have to disagree with you. His post is filled with the same passion for our country that many keep bottled up inside out of the "tolerance" so many claim they want America to exemplify. After all, I cannot find an untruth about the facts he stated.

You may not agree with how he stated it. That is itself, the beauty of our way of life. They, and others came "Here" for something they did not have "There". Our laws and rules are different. It is up to them to assimilate to our culture. This is what in fact makes our mixture here "Special".

The local board has the responsibility to see that the laws and rules are upheld equally. This will be to the chagrin of the Temple or the Billiard Room Owner.

I admire mikefingers for speaking passionately about something he believes in. That is not a sign of ignorance when the content is honest and truthful.

If they won't jump in the melting pot, they should leave or never have came in the first place.

I totally agree with mikefinger's sentiment. We are ruining this once great country with some very strange notions of how things were intended to work.

Jay,

Nicely put! My upbringing was one of tolerance of those "different" from me. In return I expected they would respect me and my values. In the greatest percentage of cases, they do. At least to my face. Like you, as part of an invisible, but very vocal minority, it hurts to hear people degrade me or another person just because they look or believe differently. The poster who suggests some people get out of his "Country" would be one of those boarding a ship or plane if the Native Americans asked us to leave. Other than those Native Americans, we are all immigrants. Anyway, this thread should now be moved to NPR.

This is a good post Jay. The most important line for me was, where you were explaining to your daughter and her friend the differences in our cultures.

I can remember the first time back in the 60's that Blacks came to the public swimming pool, and all the Whites got out and left.

I can also remember back in the 80's when I was trying to get Isaac "the Hustling Rabbi" to travel to South Jersey for some Friday Night Action!! That's a culture clash!!:embarrassed2:

Sadly, in North America we have become a multi national society instead of
a multi cultural society that our great continent was founded upon.
Imagine, refusing to take off their head wear when entering a Canadian or American Legion hall.
Do we go to their birthplace and pee on the graves of their ancestors?
Changing a traditional uniform (100 plus years old) of the RCMP to accomodate those who wear turbans.

Sorry, this is a evidence of assimilation, not a lack of assimilation. The Hindu Temple in question is acting just like many Christian churches, synagogues, city councils, and busybodies throughout the country -- it doesn't want a pool hall nearby.

Strikes me that Hindu has little to do with it, other than giving a few people a chance to go off on bizarre and ignorant tirades.

And Jay, shift us back about 100 years in time and you'd have been part of the crowd saying the very same sorts of things about Catholics.

I agree Cory.

By the way, who's country is this? What if the Hindu's were born in America. Is this still not their country? I think many people's answer to this question varies from how they really feel.
