Jealousy will get you nowhere. For the record I have been building cues full time for over 14 years here in South Florida. I have never been without orders and I have hundreds of satisfied customers. I have never told a customer what they like is "Wrong" just because I did not prefer to do it that way. I always tried to work with them and accomplish a cue that they could be proud of.

I have not always been able to satisfy every customer but that is not because I did not try. To this day I do my best to satisfy my customers.

I have been rude to you because you are a jerk. For that I will not appologize. As far as I am concerned you can take your perfect size little Hoppe Ring and put it where the sun don't shine.

i agree with ross on this one a hundred percent...you guys can't knock him for really telling the truth...if you cue makers want to use different sized hoppe rings, (technically not a hoppe ring, but a band) per specifications of a customer, very understandable. but don't make the cue's expecting to sell them here or flea-bay that you personally put an oversized rediculous ring in, per your specifications, then call it a hoppe. it's done all the time...

I'm a jerk because your opinion and mine don't align.... that's nice. I have NOT been rude to you up until it was required in retaliation.

You may satisfy your customers all you can, but at the end of the day, people buy from who they like. You're not a likeable person.

I find it immensely funny and hypochritical that Ross is being slammed for putting his opinions about the butchering of hoppe rings out there while other people post in here about there likes and dislikes. I guess some people's opinions are acceptable while others aren't.

Ross may not be a cue maker, but he has every right to post his opinion just as others have, who are not cue makers, here.

A hoppe ring is a hoppe ring, if and only if it falls into a specific size. Just because someone calls something a hoppe ring doesn't make it so.

For some people to get so hot and bothered is assinine, especially if you have made less than 60 cues and all of sudden they are selling for 1K+ because of hype on here. Seems to me that 1K+ is awfully high for a relatively no-named cue maker. That is just my opinion.

Ross: Thanks for the interesting topic here! This is what I love, FREEDOM OF SPEECH! I have built a few cues that I have put what I called Hoppe rings in. Now after 14 years of buiilding cues, today I have learned something new. I have had several Willie Hoppe Titlist cue's that I have converted. Some of them had the rings in it and some of them didn't. Thanks to KJ I think it was that posted the size of the rings I learned the exact size of each ring. According to Brunswick specs. Thanks KJ, knowledge is everything! That will be something that I use when I am building cue's with Hoppe rings to just sell. Since it is my customers that I do my absolute best to please I will build cue's to suit what they are looking for according to looks. I have read all of this thread and I didn't take it that anyone here was telling me how to build a cue. It took it as this is what "they" consider to be right when talking about a Hoppe Ring. Since I do 90% of my bussiness on the internet and about 50% of it here, I like to hear the opinions of my potential customers!

So I would like to thank AZ BILLIARDS for having this forum!
I hope that everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Great NEW YEAR!

Ahhh, can you feel the love and the holiday spirit? :grinning-moose: It's been several weeks since we've had some real controversy here, and Ross just stepped right into a big steaming pile of it.

I like the thread and hearing a buyer's opinion, I happen to agree with his opinion, but I think the delivery could have been different. A little too condescending and confrontational for this crowd that has a record of shooting first, and asking questions later. (That comment not aimed at anyone in particular, as many of us have been guilty of a short fuse at one time or another.) ;) This topic is clearly subjective, so no amount of mud slinging or chest thumping is going to crown one the victor and the other and idiot.

I wonder if Herman Rambow drew snears from his peers or customers the first time that he put a "Rambow" ring in one of his cues back in the '40s...

Here's a question for you. Do you still call it a Hoppe style cue if it has a Hoppe ring but 5 or 6 points? What about 4 points and a Hoppe ring, but only 2 veneers? I don't know where I'm going with this . . .

Ross is correct on his Hoppe ring essay. Hoppe rings are not meant to be overpowering. However I believe the initial intent was to show separation between the butt of the cue and the butt plate. IMHO the classical way of the thinner ring is better than the fatter, thicker ring.

Arnot is also correct he builds cues as he is told to build them. If his customer wants to call a 3/4" wide ring a Hoppe ring, sure go ahead. We can all just snicker at him like we do when someone shows us recut 4 and 8 pointers and tries to tell us there are 32 points in the cue.

Now lets talk about propeller inlays and the recent bastardization of an iconic inlay. Some people that have never seen a Szamboti propeller should immediately halt the practice.

It actually isn't jealousy.

I was pointing out the absurdity of prices getting jacked up because a few nut-hanging blowhards pump a no-named cue maker up so they can flip them and make a few bucks.

I see no jealousy in that, unless it is you trying to project your jealousy onto other people's view points.
