Hoppe ring etiquette pt. 2: What size is "right"?

It actually isn't jealousy.

I was pointing out the absurdity of prices getting jacked up because a few nut-hanging blowhards pump a no-named cue maker up so they can flip them and make a few bucks.

I see no jealousy in that, unless it is you trying to project your jealousy onto other people's view points.

What are you talking about? What is a "Nut-Hanger". Who is the no-named cuemaker whose cues got pumped? Why would you make it sound like its the cuemaker's fault that his cues are liked?

What does this have to do with Hoppe Rings?

If i have to post it, you haven't been paying attention. Let's get back on track.

I like Hoppe cues. Or should they be called Rambow cues?

IMO, the rear ring or band, be it ivory, white phenolic, white plastic, white tape, or white decal has become known as a Hoppe ring/style regardless of what is happening in the forearm or wrap area. To be sure, there is a good deal of variation in buttsleeve length and the size of the white ring and black buttcap. When the black/white rings are much larger than .250/.375 on a new cue, it looks out of proportion to me and I don't much care for the look. The trend, I think, is toward a more sleek look where less (in size of rear rings) is more.

SNIP...Here's a question for you. Do you still call it a Hoppe style cue if it has a Hoppe ring but 5 or 6 points? What about 4 points and a Hoppe ring, but only 2 veneers? I don't know where I'm going with this . . .

When I had such a cue built by Tim Scruggs and Bob Frey in 1979 they referred to it as Rambow style. Over the years it seems like Hoppe style has become more common to describe cues with that style rear. Your Bob Dzuricky Rambow/ Hoppe looks good, IMO.

To me, Hoppe ring automatically means, between .200 and .250, with a 3/8 black cap, anything else is not. Sometimes it's all how you define it to the customer that makes the difference on choice. If it is larger, say something like 3/4, then I call it a Southwest styled ring, it separates the butt sleeve so to speak and brings a little of the forearm down to the bottom tastefully.

Now lets talk about propeller inlays and the recent bastardization of an iconic inlay. Some people that have never seen a Szamboti propeller should immediately halt the practice.

Someone needs to tell George Balabushka that he had it all wrong when he did this one. ;)

I want to say you have a nice collection.. I assume you're talking about that Hoppe Bushka? LOL...

Anyways what is nice to point out is George B. had a lot of cues done with these pearl nameplates. I wanted to point that out because there was a time when people put their name on the cue knowing it would be the only one they would ever own. Unlike now where you don't put your name on it because you can't flip it if you do... pride in ownership fella's...

Not too bad...but the black phenolic is a tad grande by todays standards! I think we have to cut George some slack because he was one of the pioneers. Some of H.J. Rambow's rounded large white buttcaps don't float my boat either!

You mean the ones that resemble warped ping-pong paddles? Carumba! The oversized engraved peacocks that look more like cockroaches are another winner. Only thing worse are inlays terribly out of proportion or poorly indexed! It's all easy though from this side of the workbench ;)

Look at it this way - you're now more educated in what your options are....

To each his own........

I like the size and proportions of this butt cap and hoppe ring combo. Personally I've got to have a functional bumper or I feel guilty putting the naked butt cap on the rough grungy floor.

Merry Christmas - thanks for the 2008 wisdom here.

does this qualify as a Hoppe ring?

I'll post a second pic with the makers name after I get some replies.

My Paul Mottey is a Hoppe style cue with his initials on the ring not on the wood and I love it.My buddy just got a similar cue and it's a Scuggs. Real nice cue. Richard Black has put out some great looking Hoppe styled cues too.

Looks like a Scruggs to me - he typically puts them higher than most...
