In case you somehow missed the story in the main forum:

Ive got a set of his vids on the way because a lot of people say they're really good, but I was just wondering other guys thoughts on this.

Still new to the business and just wanted to pick some brains.

Kris

Edit: Was not illegal ivory, was my bad to insinuate that, apparently just had to do with shipping some ivory illegally.

Honest question, not being facetious. If it was legal ivory, why did he plead guilty to the charges? Did he just have too much?

People need to learn to read. Nowhere in the article did it say that he had illegal ivory.

If he wasn't doing something illegal i doubt they would have raided his shop after catching him doing whatever he was doing.....

if he wasn't using illegal ivory he should have the paperwork.....if he doesn't have the paperwork in order then he's an idiot

either way i wouldn't do buis with a shady person nor with an idiot

tho you are 100% correct that the article did not say that he had illegal ivory

Read the Article. He was not charged with possession of illegal Ivory. He shipped some cues overseas with Ivory in them.

This occurred in 2007 according to the article. He is still selling Ivory. If he was selling illegal ivory, I don't think he would still be in business.

I also doubt that he was arrested and taken away in cuffs. They likely came, took what they wanted and then made their case. Doesn't sound like it was a very strong one either.

He shipped legal Ivory overseas, which is illegal, nothing more. I don't know if the claim that he failed to fill out the proper paperwork is true, I always understood you could not ship it out of the country regardless of what paperwork you filed.

Read the article, it's short. The illegal activity that he did was not in possessing the ivory but he apparently he shipped cues with ivory in them out of the country according to the article. Documented Ivory is legal in this country but it is illegal to import or export.

I doubt if it will improve his image with anyone and it certainly can't make it any worse. An elevator only goes so low.

It would appear that he has done nothing more than what MANY builders do somewhat regularly, except get caught.

I understand the motive behind the law, but don't know of anyone who wouldn't fill out some documents to comply. While the Overseas market has slowed, they still crave ivory in the high end cues they purchase.

It's not like he sold crack to babies......

There's nothing to comply to, no documents to fill out, except not shipping Ivory overseas, simple.

it pains me to hear that they took 2000 cuban cigars away from the poor guy. i'd bet that most of them had some serious age on them.

What is the purpose of this thread? It has all been discussed before, I really see no purpose to keep bringing this crap up, I mean who can say how it is going to affect this man, but one thing is for sure he is paying for his mistake and he doesn't need this crap!!!!!!!

I agree....One last thing. If Joe took the cue/s to London with him, as his personal property, and then sold them while he was there..I'm not sure that he actually violated any law. I could be mistaken, and that probably is the case, but this is where it might get sketchy..If he took his personal property with him, and struck a deal to sell it while abroad, as opposed to shipping it. Then, I'm not sure any law/s have actually been broken....Cest la vie......

It makes no difference what so ever how they got out of the country. Carried by him, shipped UPS or sent by carrier pidgin. The moment they crossed the border the law was broke. It's the same with any player, if he crosses the border with a cue containing ivory he has broken the same law and as such he has set himself up for the same prosecution and fines.

Wow....That is nice to know. Thank you for the clarification Dickie! I don't have any cues with Ivory in them, but this may help those that do.

It was the smuggeld Cuban cigars that the reall wanted. Ivory was just a rouse to search the property.
The tax loss on 1,800 cigars must be quite a bit.
