How custom is a custom cue?

This has been on my mind lately and I thought this was as good a place as any to ask. Lets say you have a cue that you enjoy everything about except for the design. Is it appropriate to ask another cue maker who is known to make a certain cue to the specs that you want? I'm asking cause I currently own a cue made by a maker who is no longer making cues and am thinking of having another made. Let me know what you think....

Of course, why would it not be ok? The guy who made my cue does a lot (most???) of his business that way. His only requirement is he will not make a cue identical to something he has already made, every one of his cues is unique.

What do you want copied ?
The taper ?
 
that shouldn't be a problem........tho some makers are tooled out for very specific things so some requests by customers will never be met by particular makers.

this is one thing that everyone should understand.

I would make a cue pretty much however a customer wanted it so long as its not detrimental to the construction or the play of the cue. But if you asked me can i install a unilock quick release joint i would decline as A) i don't think its a good joint. B) i don't have the tooling for that joint. C) I'm not about to invest my good money on buying a product to use in my product that i doesn't meet my standards.

(some think its great and thats OK as this is my opinion and i am entitled to my own opinions at least when it comes to my work.)

saying that like i said i would build a cue in any fashion that met my standards of construct. I want it to be as custom for that player as possible, when someone makes an order I ask them a butt load of questions that I've heard no one else asks them. this by no means is a knock to any other maker and I'm not saying I'm better than anyone (except Eddie Wheat but hey who isnt lmfao) just that I'm differient thats all ;)

uni-loc

I have heard others complain about uni-loc joints. I like mine but what is the problem with them from a better players and/or a makers point of view?

thread contact ( its my opinion it influences the energy flow through the cue in a negative fashion) and their issues with galling and locking up........i've never seen a joint that locks up like that except for the poor cues that were built with a brass insert and a brass pin with finer threads.

that and feel wise i don't usually like the hit its very hollow to me (but thats an opinion b/c feel is not something that can be a real scientific measurment because its subjective to the individual.

Its one of those things that is always going to have two sides to the fence.

They are fine in JP's and combo cues imop for reasons like cuesmith brought up before such as time limits and being quick to break down.........but i can make the same quick release effect with a 5/16 x 14 pin and insert.

no one say the quck lease one is no good, but the quick lease may reduce performance on custom cues, most of custom cues' pin r big such as Gina, TAD etc....

I had BK1 and BK2, but after break for while the uni-loc joint funny sometimes, I need to keep tide it on during the games.....just opinion

LOL, I think he's saying that the quick release joints dont preform as well as say a 3/8 x 10 pin. He needs to keep tightening the uni-lock joint during play because it comes loose.

On another note, Bartender.... Gimme a double shot of whatever he's drinking!

and Cdryden here ya go buddy.......careful tho i've drank these and gotten on here at 3am and went off on everyone but thankfully it just looked like this....when i woke up in the mourning i looked in the mirror and thought i was Nick Nolte....so i put on the running shoes and had to run it out of me (close call)

Richard Neighbors is making a cue for me now. Of the things that I told him that I wanted and also he asked me what I wanted were:

-Cue design - It's a John Davis blank, but other than that the ring work, pin, linen wrap, joint, Hoppe ring and butt cap are obviously done by Richard
-Balance point
-Butt diameter
-Shaft diameter
-Shaft taper and what tips/ferrules

I would say overall Richard covered every base that could be covered, so yea I would say it's fairly custom.

My cue was completely custom. In fact, I more or less designed it and the cuemaker simply built it. I specified everything, the woods, points, veneers, weight, steel joint, pin, joint collars, wrap, shaft diameter, ferrule material, etc., etc., etc. I even test hit it during the latter stages of construction to give him feedback on the hit.

How about the epoxy used and A-joint configuration ?
I won't let anyone tell me what to do there. :wink:
You change those two, you're changing a lot about the cue.

I don't think you will happy with the result, first no two cues hit exactly alike even if they are built using the same woods and assembled using the same technique.

I am not saying don't have another cue built, however, I am saying don't be disappointed if it is not exactly what you expect, hell it may be better, well any way I hope so.
