How do you chalk?

I was watching the Strickland / Hall videos and noticed that both players were right handed and that both players chalked holding the cue in their left hand and the chalk in their right hand. I wonder if they got in the habit of chalking that way in order to avoid getting chalk on their bridge hand.
I chalk two ways. Sometimes I chalk "snooker" style holding the cue in my left hand with the butt on the floor and the chalk in my right hand with "brush" strokes. (I shoot right handed). I also chalk by holding the cue in my right hand balanced and the chalk in my left hand with a slight turning of the cue (Archer style). I tend to chalk the first way when I need to relax because I can focus on the tip while I am chalking and that helps me clear my mind.
How about everyone else? Any unique chalking styles out there?

EDIT: Oops, I guess Archer also switches hands when chalking.

I brush it most of the time. I like the how it lays a perfect layer on the tip. Not to thick and not to thin. I also have a question do most of ya'll chalk after every shot? I always have.

shoot right, chalk left, i'd find it distracting now if i had to flip the cue to my left had just to chalk with my right. i used to do that |snooker style chalking, don't think i'd go back to it. plus i think it looks cooler:thumbup:

I'm a left-hander that shoots with right-hand, chalk with left-hand holding cue on floor and right-hand holding chalk. ;)

Right handed...have the chalk in my right hand. I'm also a pocket chalker user...one of the places I play in never has decent chalk, so the pocket chalker is part of my pre shot routine.

I also noticed in that video that both players would chalk up more than once when contemplating a hard shot...I'm going to try to adapt that...use the chalk while thinking of my next move.

I bridge left hand and chalk right hand. It would actually make more sense to chalk left hand and bridge left hand as when you hold your cue as you chalk the dust will get on your bridge hand.

I put the chalk on the floor holding it with my shoes .
Then I hold my cue upside down and using both hands I spin my cue
super fast like I am trying to start a fire  I do this every time I chalk after every shot ! I go through about 6 pieces of chalk an hour :D

Larry

Weird habit

When I'm playing i generally have a piece of chalk in my right hand as this is my stroke hand. I've read and heard that if you have difficulties in 'over gripping' or strong arming your stroke that placing a single cube on your middle and ring finger will assist in allowing you to actually grip the cue without strong arming and killing the action from your wrist.

Now wether that's true or not, it still helps me out to just hold my chalk there to keep my hand loose and relaxed, and I never forget to chalk with each shot. When I actually do chalk a tip it's cue balanced on either hand with the free hand applying it, and that's really no lie, just one of those random things depending on how far I move, table side, other player location various other things that I really don't think about. I just instinctivly move around and do it as I prepare.

Sorry if I sound goofy or rambled :D

The important thing is, don't be one of those guys who holds the stick an an angle across his body, cups his chalking hand the way you would if you were trying to do something unsavory that would result in hairy palms, and then grind the chalk down and rain chalkdust down into the palm of said hand.

It's the most common method I see of chalking, and also the ideal way to get a blue shaft.

chalk right handed, play right handed. i think i chalk bad though. I go through chalk FAST. I chalk across the whole piece corner to corner diagonally and my chalk ends up wearing down in an X shape. But it gets the job done, so at least chalk is free... for the most part

I chalk like Kim Shaw. I think Danny Bas. does it this way too.

Put the butt of the cue on the floor and switch hands.

I watched a guy do that consistently last weekend while he was playing 8B with his g/f. I thought he was being a joker the first time...but he kept doing it. Yeah, he looked .

I've always used both hands. May depend on which hand I pick up the chalk with. And, I brush it on and get very little on my hands most of the time.

I am right handed, shoot with my right hand and chalk the tip using my right hand. Just brush the chalk across the tip holding the cue at a angle so the dust don't fall on the shaft and also hold the palm of the hand holding the chalk above the cube so the dust doesn't get on my palm. Found this to help keep my cue cleaner.

This thread got me thinking about how to spice up the game a little. During tournaments on the TV table they should have chalk girls and cue attendents. Kind of like a caddy in golf. They already use rack girls so why not have a few wearing bikinis chalking the cues or handing the chalk to the player? :joyful:

Right-handed player, chalk with my left....sort like the pic of Buste, but my cue my be a bit more parrallel with the floor....only chalk I ever get on my hand is on the bottom of my left hand, where it contacts and picks up chalk from the table when geniuses decide to leave the chalk upside down :D In a long match, I try to wash my hands about once an hour...

Right hander. Chalk with right hand. Early in my life, I was doing the left-hand chalking thing, but then noticed that Rempe would twirl the stick and chalk with his right hand, then swipe the shaft with his right hand, then left hand. So, I started doing that!

So:

pass stick from right hand to left hand
Chalk with right hand
place chalk down
swipe shaft with right hand
swipe shaft with left hand while grabbing the grip/handle area with right hand

I also sometimes grab the shaft with my right hand near the tip (hardy har har), support the butt of the cue with my right foot on the floor, and chalk with my right hand. My left hand does nothing but make obscene gestures or is propped on my hip as I shake my head cursing the luck gods.
