Just wondering how serious pool players take off and put on a tip. Is the proper way documented anywhere???

I have seen the cheapo kits at Dicks and Walmart, but what do you guys use? How do get the old one off, type of glue, clamp etc?? Thanks!

Take it to a professional

Take it to someone with a lathe who knows what they are doing. It will save you tons of aggravation, and money. $10 is a fair rate for the work and you have to have it done once, maybe twice a year.

It's as easy was 1,2,3, 4 & 5

1. Take it off with:

2. Sand the ferrule with:

3. Glue a new tip on with:

4a. Triim it with this:

4b. and this:

5. Shape the new tip with:

And your done.

Don't forget to send that shaft out to get repaired after you butcher it.

I like to place mine under my pillow before I go to sleep and let the Tip Fairy take care of it for me.

I do my own tips. It's easy if you have a lathe, all the proper tools and supplies, and plenty of experience. If you don't, then do yourself a favor and take it to an experienced and capable cue repair person. I have seen shafts and ferrules that have been totally screwed up by guys who thought they could do it themselves. I'm talking deep gouges in the shafts, chunks cut out of ferrules and tips that looked like they were cut down to size by rabid rats gnawing on them. One guy even cut the living hell out of his hand and required a ton of stitches. All to save the lousy $15 to $30 bucks it would have cost them to have someone like me do the job the right way.

A tip lasts me a long time. I don't constantly reshape it or pick at it. I like harder tips and they hold their shape great. The only thing I do is apply chalk. That being said I have a expert with a lathe do it. The extra dollars are worth it.

Practice on a house cue with cheap tips. after doing a few you will find that it is not worth the trouble and possibility of ruining an expensive tip.

Don't you just unscrew the old one and screw on the new one? Doesn't seem that difficult!

Take it to your local pool room and find out if they do cue repair or if they know where you can have it done.

i just started using the crutch tip method. Practiced on an old shaft i had and now can do my own in about 20 minutes or so.

Putting on a tip is not easy. Take the advice some of the others said and bring it to a good repair man. Not some guy who says yeah i know how to put a tip on. That is unless your cue doesn't cost more then $30.
Or you can use one of these. :D

Just a thought, this thread may have been better in Ask The Cue Maker Forum!

One thing is for sure, if you decide to do it yourself, the cheapo kit from Dicks and Walmart will not do.
