I was wondering how you tell if someone is posting under 2 different accounts. I remember a year or 2 ago someone on here caught Charlie Williams posting under 2 accounts because of the I.P. addresses or something. I thought it was Cleary or Ktown that caught him and I was wondering how they did that

I think there is software available that can locate the IP address, but I'm not sure how that would work for anyone in a member capacity. I think you have to be in the administrator capacity.

If you're an admin, you can see the logs generated by the forum. From there, you match up the IP address with the user ID. Same IP, different ID, same person, duplicate accounts.

ask one of the admins to investigate and you will find out if they deem you worthy of knowing. You prob aren't, btw.

Who are they...no point in waiting around for something that may/ may not ever happen?!

Is it InI?

Thanks but I know one of the regulars on here caught Charlie Williams doing that.. I think has caught a couple of people doing it.. Does anyone remember who was able to do that? I wanted him to check something for me

Seriously? I can't picture Charlie thinking about, let alone doing anything untoward, dishonest, or even remotely shady.

That guy is as straight as a politician.

As bad as I hate to say it...... it must have been somebody smarter than me that caught him. I am a mere spectator in the interweb world, I don't know how to do any fancy sleuthing.

I think Cleary may have a little more know-how than I do, it may have been him that traced it.

Same IP is not necessarily 2 people. Think about it what if a pool room has a public IP boom 20 logins same IP. Same with anyones home who is visited by other pool guys from AZ.

look at their statistics and personal info. often it matches.

If the person is an idiot.

Seriously, do you really think someone with motives to create a 2nd account would enter the same personal info in the 2 accounts?

Didn't pockepoint create pocketpoint3, pocketpoint4 etc a long while back? It's rare, but it happens. At least SC5 mixes it up with his name that he re creates lol.

If you know what you're doing it's pretty easy to set up accounts that appear to have different IP addresses.

A fishing guide I know once set up a proxy account with an IP address that showed he was located in Japan. He used this address to set up a bogus request from one of the supposed minions of a fictitious Japanese industrialist who wanted to book a fly fishing trip in the Adirondacks.

I could go on all day about the twists and turns this cruel little trick took as the poor guy struggled to avoid insulting the Japanese man as the prospective prize got larger and larger. By the time it was done, he had contracted three other guides to handle about a dozen "fishermen" that we're added to the trip.

Then, without warning, said minion replied that Mr. Nakamura was deeply insulted and no longer would require his services. The clueless guide made a valiant attempt to save the day with the most hilarious e-mail apology I've ever read, complete with wording using pidgin English. Something along the lines of:

"Mr. Garfield so sorry insult Mr. Nakamura...." Lol

The "Japanese" never answered him.

It was a wicked thing to do, but the guy was a first-class dickhead that every guide in the 'Dacks despised. He got what he had coming IMO.

Not true. 2 people in same household with only 1 computr comes to mind. Husband/wife, brothers, roommates etc.. perfectly valid reasons to have more than 1 acct from same ip

This is true...my wife created a account when Bill Stroud did the contest so she could submit an entry. She has 2 total posts on AZ ever though so you won't see 2k posts of hers that look similar to mine.

I am a member of a sports related website which used to have an option to view the IP address of all other members.

They stopped doing it when one member made a death threat against another member - some people get a little carried away when it comes to sports.

One person did it a while back here.
It was obvious too . The other alias wrote without capitalizing the first letter of his sentences . Then after a few posts he forgot to do that and started writing like the guy he was nutwinging for ( himself, lol ).
Then he claimed he was from another state as the other guy he was nutwinging for ( himself ) . Really ? All the other guy had to do was to have a relative in the other state register for him. He can PC Anywhere to that computer and start posting.
It was so obvious this infamous person was doing just that .
The infamous dude was banned for going postal and has come back.
His other alias of course has not.
He might play the same game again.

There's really just so much the admin can do. If the banned person gets another ISP, I don't know if they can tell right away it's the banned person.
