How good are you?

I'm just wondering how good the members really play (let's observe honesty here, people:)). If you are a USPPA member tell us your average speed. (This way we will know who's advise to follow in terms of stroke and strategy.... :D )

What some people might try to tell you is that good teachers don't necessarily have to be good players. This may be true. The same would hold true for those who offer advice. Personally, I would rather take advice from a good player instead of from someone who is merely regurgitating something he observed or heard from someone else; but that's just my personal preference.

A year ago or so before moving to NYC I was rated a 58 USPPA. Since moving here, I'd say I'm playing in the 65 range and slowly improving.

In 2004 I was a 38, I think. I've been gradually improving, much to the chagrin of my peers who started playing around the same time. My realistic goal is to be a 75 by the end of the year.

USPPA ratings and examples for comparison, for those not familiar with USPPA:

*175 - 200 -Archer, Pagulayan, Reyes, etc.... estimated by USPPA [Anything above 170 or so is the cream of the crop. I'm sure post WPC, Alcano would be in this group.... maybe. Same for Orcullo.]

*165 - Ronnie Alcano

*148 - Tony Chohan [These would be strong regional players. Capable of making top 16 in a national event, but not one of the picks to win a national event]

*115 - Autin Murphy... aka the kid on the IPT Tour, if it still exists [strong shortstop range]

*106 - Wayne Pullen... good So Cal shooter; placed 9th in US Open 1-pocket [shortstop speed]

*83 - Melissa Herndon, ranked #15 on the WPBA (note: many admit when she's in stroke, she's more like a 110... very strong)

*65 - These tend to be typically "B" players, although the USPPA site lists them as A players. The site defines A players as in the 65-79 range, but I think this is overly generous.

*40-50: C

*40 and below: Everything under a C player.

Thanks for posting a reference for those who are not familiar with USPPA. Your improvement is quite impressive, i might add.

Thanks. This was just something fast I whipped up, mostly because I couldn't copy/paste the USPPA info because it seems inflated. As much as I'd like to consider myself an A player, it would be just too counterintuitive (not to mention false!) to the theme of the post!

And thanks for the compliment. Like everyone else on this board, once I picked up a pool cue I couldn't put it down... it became an obsession and hasn't waned yet. Whereas my friends would go to bars in their free time, I was at Hollywood Billiards!

In the few USPPA tourneys I played in Seattle they started me at a 70 after watching me play a few racks. After three weeks the tourney director moved me or had me moved to 100. He was 106 and was sick of spotting me a game with my lower handicap after I shut him out two weeks in a row to win the tourneys. After that I stopped playing because the payout wasn't that good for the local tourneys and then I moved back to Vancouver where they don't have USPPA.

My skill level is such that I need not post an answer here, and I mean that in a bad sorta way :o :o :o !

I am a 400. I spot Efren the Orange Crush.:p :D

Never been USPPA ranked. But UWPoolGod is probably about ~10-15 points or so ahead of me.

What would you say Todd?

what would u need to give a number to someone?

in europe we dont have this system, so how many racks do you need to tell me my number? i guess 65-70 or so...

could u give an estimate on the inings needed / rackavg? straightpool run avg's?

i think im a b/a player.:o

I"m a strong c player maybe a low b. i don't know how to rate myself using the usppa system. if i did i bet it'd be pretty low maybe a 55 or so

Right now, Im playing the C range, with a high gear of B level. When I was playing my best, strong B - low A with some strong A level moments spread out in there...... :D

No idea about those systems. How do I see myself? Depends when you catch me. For instance, Thursday's 9 ball tourney. At 8:45 I'd say I was a B player. At 9pm maybe touching A.

At 9:05 definitely a D!

But it's fun to ride this rollercoaster!!:D

Having looked at the USPPA ratings, I rate myself a C (47). :D

What spot do I get rotation?

I'm so bad, I can't be hustled. I know that a deaf, dumb, and blind kid could beat me if he wanted to play pool (or pinball) for money...
