You see it in most games, pool and golf i think are the worst, there is the "OH I can play" or "Oh I used to be good" people. Its the worst in pool leagues I think 3's puffing their feathers like their Johnny Archer and so on...

My ? is at what skill level is someone a good player and should carry themselves as a representative of the game in that manner.

Since there is no real good system, I would have to say none. Also compare 3's to 7's. I rarely see a 7 brag as much as a 3 when they win or make a shot. I guess my answer is that you have reached that level when you don't feel need to tell everyone how good you are and you understand your limitations.

it all depends - I've been beaten by an APA 3, have beaten an APA 7, and NEVER lost to Johnny Archer - lol

whatever/whoever you (personally) think is GOOD is good. And if someone wants to brag themselves up - let 'em

I figure if you can run 100 balls in 14.1 you are good. No amount of luck is going to get a banger through that.

Fatboy is rich here... next to Bill Gates, he's poor. Pool is no different! It would depend on the group of players you compete against or the room you play in.

Are you talking about the players that BS non pool players? I know a few of these guys. They show friends how to shoot - while not having a clue, talk about their wins - usually making it up. I like when they talk about beating the best player in the room and leave out the part about handicap.

I can go in my local room and someone might say I'm good. Bigger events its Jason, who? My match after this jason guy should be a good one:cool:

yep, it's all relative. I might go out and shoot even par in golf with a guy who shoots around 95 - I'm GOOD to him. Tiger comes and plays my course and can do that (shoot par) or better with just his 7 iron, now I don't look so GOOD. lol

Yup....that's what I say. I can beat 99.9% of all the people in the world but that .1% will kick my arse all over the planet.......

No matter how GOOD you are (or think you are), if you can't find someone who can beat the heck out of you (on the pool table), you're simply not looking hard enough! I think I play okay, but if I had to play guys like Archer and Strickland to eat...I'd starve to death!...and anyone who knows me, knows I'm definitely NOT starving to death!

a real subjective question don't you think?

To me, if you're not at pro level at w/e then you're not really good then are you? But that's just me and i'm not close to pro level for that matter..

Straight pool is the definitive measure of your pool playing ability IMO. The balls can fall right now and again in 9 ball and you can get through 4 or 5 racks I suppose, but you aren't going to ever run say 75 or more balls in 14.1 by accident. Of course I'm talking 9' table here and not some bar box with canyon pockets.

From the posted replys I was thinking this went down about as good as a terd in the punch bowl. But the poll looks like its working fine.

I was just wondering what people thought its hard to figure on all the this's and that's. If I was worried about subjectives the big thing would be how good are you at what level. Not to long ago there was a person on here saying a B player puts 6 packs on ya or something crazy like that.

I dont think who your playing makes any differance if your good, they might be better or worse but you are still at your skill level.

I think good ( not oh my god hes good) is high B or low A, shortstop or "open" is a pretty strong player in any game.

Any way thanks for the votes and or replys...

P.S. There isn't no 3 (well maybe in the Sandbaggers Ass. of America) thats good, no not even "for a three", but here sure are alotthat think they got it licked...And if running 100 in straight pool is just good, I got some cues for sale Im taking up shuffel board, today...

I agree with you 3, and I dont care if it is on a bar box LOL. Running 75 or more is about a lot more than just pocketing the balls. It takes patterns and position. A player cant luck through those.

This A,B,C stuff isn't a good way of saying how good you are. An A in some places might barely make a B in others. I think straight pool is the only way to actually score a game of pool. Everyone is equal in straight pool. Question should be how many balls run in straight pool make you a good player. I'd say 50-75 balls would put you in a good category.

How do you know when your good?

When you no longer feel the need to post individual break and runs on youtube.

From an objective standpoint, I would say A player simply because at this level players don't miss bread and butter shots, they generally have a lot of knowledge and can execute it effectively. But from a personal standpoint, I've always had a very harsh definition of 'good', I refer to shortstops and better as good players.

I would agree though that the word 'good' is subjective. I've known guys who could barely string together two balls consider themselves fine players because "I make some nice shots".

I have no idea. There no leagues anywhere near me, and I have no idea if I'm a 2, 5, B, or D, or what any of that means.

Is there any way to guestimate one's ability without league or tourney play?

I usually beat my wife, but I don't think she'll testify against me.

We play 8 ball at home. After the break, I generally run out about 20% of the time on a 9' GC with standard pockets, so to you guys I probably suck.

It`s been said

Good depends alot on who you`re standing next to.

If you are beating everyone in your room, and most places you go,

I think you are getting there.

As for running a 100 in 14.1, still depends on a few things. Are you running a 100 on a fast table with pro cut or shimmed pockets?

Can you do it on TV?

Not trying to be a smart a$$ but I`ve never played 14.1 in my life, (but it sounds like a great way to get better)

played very little on a 9ft table of any quality. But in my area I win a lot of games.

I`ve just started a new room with 9ft tables( i suck)

Looking to get some instruction, gotta start somewhere.

Attitude, ability to win/loose graciously, practice, nerves, rest, all play a big part for me.

Nothing like watching someone who is good though.

Ummmm...you must not know Hennessee then...lol:grin:
