I have only been playing a few months. I try to play everyday. Played a lot the 70s in high school. I am 59 years old now. My wife got me a dvd set by Jerry Briesath for Christmas, I really like his style of teaching. I wish he was closer to Ky so I could take some lessons.

I've been playing pool for about 12 years now and I'm finally playing respectable pool. I play like a b player. If nothing's tied up in a game of 9 ball I'm favored to get out

I've been playing for just under 2 years now, at 23 years old. I play decent 9 ball, be it APA (what I generally play right now as a SL6) or straight 9 ball. Also joining a NAPA 10 ball league in which I will start as a 70. Only a 5 in APA 8 ball, but I have learned a few things about proper defenses and pace over the last few moths and have won I believe 7 out of my last 9 matches in APA 8 ball, all against 5's and 6's, something I couldn't ay 3 months prior. I now play 4 nights a week in league, practice one other day and try to play weekly tournaments whenever I get the chance on Saturdays and Sundays. I have learned to love the game of pool and plan to play and learn more about the game for the rest of my life. I have never been this passionate about something (as my ex-fiance could probably tell you ;p )

started playing in 1965 and played very well for 20 years (A player), had a 9' Brunswick at home and practiced every day. then took a 7 year sabbatical thru the islands and played on every island that had a table. never lost a match until I got to Bonaire and lost to the island champion, but only by one game. then stopped for more than 10 years. started back when I was 60 yrs old. can't get my game back the way it once was but still kick some butt from time to time. ;) gosh, I love this game!

26 years... I play every day (except while on vacation) Leagues 2 days a week..a tournament here and there. The rest of the time on my table at home. Rocketing balls into pockets is still the highlight of my day

43 years; pretty active for most of that time. I've had tables at home for 26 years. I currently play at least 5 days a week.

Considering how much time I have spent, I should be a lot better player.

I started playing in 1986 at Gene's pool room in Myrtle Beach SC.I was lucky to see a lot of great players come through that room trying to match up with Weenie Beenie,Mark Tadd,Jay Swanson,Country Calvin, ect.I hardly play now because of work,I get to play maybe once or twice a month.

I started playing 8 years ago and I would play everyday back then but I don't play as much but wished I could.

My father signed a permission slip for me to go into the Silver Cue in Woburn, Ma about 1964 or 65. Played well enough not to embarrass myself if I entered a Joss Northeast Event. Even played in the Turning Stone event a couple of times. When people find out I love the game of pool they ask "Are you good?" I explain that I am like a 5 Handicap golfer. I can beat 90% of the people that play pool, but the 10% that will beat me will stomp my old, fat arse.

Thanks for the replies! I did not think there would be much interest in my thread. Too "newbie" maybe. I find the replies very interesting!

many many years

i played my first game of pool at my rich cousins house, when i was 5 years old, those colored balls rolling around on that green cloth grabbed my attention in a heartbeat.

i am now 70, you can do the math, and i play everyday.

Your father would be charged with child endangerment nowadays.

I just went into the local pool hall on my own, as I remember it. Or the YMCA. We didn't need no stinkin' badges! Beings one of the youngest/smallest, I had to play on the bumper pool table, not the 9 footers. Hell, my friends and I didn't really know or care about that....we just played and had fun fun fun.

I'm 60 and have been playing since 59...That's 1959.

I started playing @ 15 quit when I went to college, picked it back up 2 years ago ( I am now 25). I play about 3-4x a week. If time permitted I'd play daily!!

I started playing about 2 years ago at 62. I got serious about a year ago. I play every day at the senior center clubhouse.and Monday night APA (3-4) Just 11 matches won 7.

The veterans here on AZB are probably tired of this story...but I'll tell it to you:

My dad bought a cheap 6-foot pool table for the garage when I was around 14 years old. We had recently returned to Texas from a trip to Pennsylvania where my dad had family...and one of his uncles was a sporty pool player. Because he knew that he would be playing pool against Uncle Carl at some point during the visit...we (he and I went on the trip) stopped in a couple of cities on the way up at a couple of pool halls so he could practice some. I shot a few games with him...and this was my very first time on a pool table. This was 1967. In Rochester...one of the nightly things we did was go to a pub. Here, I got to shoot some more pool...and actually received a few pointers from Uncle Carl.

So, at 14 years of age, I'm really liking pool. Turns out I'm the best shotmaker in the garage, between family and friends that come to hang out. But alas...the table is a cheap one and inside of a couple of years has fallen apart and is on the curb as trash. My playing time for the next 40 years is nothing more than 2 or maybe 3 visits to a pool hall every year. I'm nothing more than a true banger.

Fast forward to 2005....I'm 52 years old. My wife played Keno every third Tuesday of the month with a bunch of ladies from the church...so 5 or 6 of us husbands started going to the pool hall on that night for something to do as a "men's night out" while the hens played Keno. I was so much a better player than the other men...they weren't having much fun playing me, and started ganging up on me whenever we played "cut-throat". Then, I found out that one of my buddies in my bowling league played pool in a league...and he got me in it the next session.

So...at 53 years of age, I have a new hobby. I fall so madly in love with it that I immediately want to learn everything I can about the game as to improve. I bought books, magazines, DVD's, took lessons, watched hours and hours of YouTube videos, got a table at home, and practiced endlessly. Played in several leagues (8-ball, 9-ball, Straight-Pool, and eventually a Master's league). I played in some local tournaments. I just couldn't get enough pool into my system!!!

Now, I am 60. I have worked my way up over the past 7 years from an APA SL3 in both 8 and 9-ball to a SL6 in 8-ball, and a SL7 in 9-ball. I just finished my Straight-Pool league where I went 12-1 and my APA 8-ball league where I went 10-1 for the session (where I had 10 straight wins to finish the session). I am no world-beater by any stretch of the imagination...but at my age and the age when I began to take pool seriously, I feel satisfied with my improvement.

I can tell you this...if you want to improve at your age, it can and will happen. The learning curve will be slower than if you were 20-something again , but if you put in the time...you will see the improvement. I still am learning, but I am to the point to where I do not believe I can improve much more...without sacrificing too much of my many other interests!!!

Good luck to you, crappiecrazy, and good shooting!!!

Thanks for the reply. I started working at a Senior Center and visited several of them in my area. Just about all of them had tables, anywhere from 1 to 10 tables. Our local center got a new used table and it has been great for the center. This is how I got a renewed interest in pool.

Watch out for them 80 year olds. They been playing 70 years ;)

We have one 93 and another player at 96. Amazing. They use the rail as a walker, but the can make shots.

I wish I knew what the league numbers that you are talking about meant. But I will learn.
