How many AZers have a Fargo Rating

Don't ask me how I am "established".....but I am, currently rated a 685 for some reason.

My high school physics teacher was showing us probability by flipping a quarter and explaining no matter what the previous results had been it was still 50/50 on the next flip. He flipped tails 22 times in a row. Put the quarter back in his pocket and would not flip it again.:eek::cool:

Which is more likely: it was a normal quarter; it was a two-tailed quarter?

I would have gone for the record if it was an apparently fair quarter.

The other possibility is that the teacher was one of those people who can flip what they want with only a small gaff that no one is likely to notice.

I love probability. Here's a classic...in a classroom of 30 kids, the teacher asks each kid to say their month and day of birth. She tells the kids that if everyone has different birthdays, they can skip doing homework that night. Did the kids do homework?

And here's a fascinating one for the coin flip. (also can be used for the red & black in roulette) If you flip a coin 250 times, what is the longest string of consecutive heads or tails that you would expect? It's probably longer than you think. Researchers have done studies where they ask people to write down what they think is 250 "random" coin toss results (eg. HTTHTHHHTHTTHTH.....) and computers are able to spot the human-generated list every time.

I had a starter rating as well and then disappeared entirely from the system. I did play one tournament at Fargo Billiards so I know they have 50+ games in the system somewhere. I have tried to get it sorted out but no luck so far.

I will say though that the few conversations that I have had with Mike Page in the past have made it abundantly clear that he is very intelligent and his love for the game is undeniable.

I think the system is brilliant and I'm sure in time most players will come to value and appreciate it, though some people can't be pleased.

Not to knock you, but you're a beginning player, with an opinion about everything (much of it misinformed, or just plain wrong). You should probably leave the "figuring out" of these systems to people like Mike Page, who really do know what's happening.

A "greenie" for you Scott for speaking honestly!!! Fargo is a great system yet you have people who want to try to figure out a way to "work" the system.

What is your robustness? I wonder if that tournament is in the system.

I think it's fairly low.... And, for the record, due to my inconsistency, probably still pretty accurate.

I have my moments, but by and large, I do not live up to that level of play because I simply don't put in the work. Before that particular tournament, I probably put in an average of 4 hours of practice a day for a month..

Unfortunately, that practice was on a red label Diamond after the DCC had went fully to the blue labels.

I had a chance to beat John Morra in the One Pocket that year as well, as I had him down 2-1 with Shane and Shuff sweating the match hard.... (Morra had won the banks the night before...) In the end, I think I went out of the One Pocket in 3 rounds... :-(

Thanks Mike Page

FargoRate is a great ranking system. Keep up the good work.

Robustness: 60 Starter Rating: 525

(preliminary)

not really sure what it means except i suck but only played two events with fargo

That's 81.3%, I'm pretty sure. Which explains why casinos are still in business.

I have a friend who is certain that it's impossible to flip heads 10 times in a row. Would it have been a sin to ask for only 10000 : 1 odds?

Someone above said they will believe in Fargo Rate when Scooter asks what someone's rating is. Bob's comment made me think of this story.

Two years ago at the DCC, Scooter was gambling with "Millionaire Carl" (or is it Karl?), who is said to be a present or former casino owner. Carl had already broken Scooter on the pool table (one game with a crazy spot) and then Scooter was raising money from his crew to flip coins with Carl.

Eventually, Carl got them to put up whatever they had and they were off. Scooter won the first flip (let's say calling tails). Of course he goes again (calling tails, wins). And again (calling tails, wins). Then they are going to flip again and someone in Scooter's crew says "don't call tails, its been tails the last three times, it has to be heads"). Scooter calls heads - and it comes tails. Scooter and crew are busted. (I actually don't remember if it was heads the whole time or tails, but that's not the point).

This demonstrates (1) that Scooter and crew don't know that the odds of the 4th flip coming up the same as the first three remains 50-50; (2) that Millionaire Carl knows that if he has the bankroll to let Scooter keep flipping, eventually Scooter will lose and Carl will take all of Scooter's money; and (3) that Carl knows enough about gamblers in general and Scooter in particular to know that Scooter can't walk away from that "free money" and will keep flipping rather than take his money and run.

It was entertaining and highly informative.

This is cool for those of us that don't get to go out and compete a ton, working with families and all of that. Even if I just play occasional tournaments I still get a pretty good sense of where I stack up. And I'm proud of that rating. It's still a long ways from elite, but it's right in the mix of a lot of good players. I have struggled at times with belief, and though I feel like I play as good as these guys sometimes I battle self doubt. But when you see the track record in black and white it can help gain some confidence.

In other news I want to fist pump because I broke my straight pool high run yesterday with a 137. I'm not going to start my own thread about it, but I wanted to high five my AZB friends. This is not about a brag, I am just childlike with my enthusiasm for the game and have worked hard on it, it's really cool to hit some milestones that make me feel like I belong where I am rated.

In the end, though, you've got to prove it on the playing table. High runs and fargo ratings are great, but there's no short cut to achievement, you have to go out and get it. In 2 months I'll have a table at home again, can't wait to start to play daily again, even for just a few minutes. Nothing like a high run to make you start to believe you can do just a little more... ;)

What is robustness? I don't use Fargo rating but I understand the score part of it but don't understand what robustness is.

The number of games you have played.

The number of players in the US who shouldn't be scared is pretty small.

You are an inspiration! Keep it up!
