How many Pro level players would you say there are residing in the US?

I can name a bunch of pros who haven't run 150 in 14.1 in three tries during the BIH starts at some of the tournaments.

And if you are playing the 10-ball ghost with no BIH on the break and beating the ghost, you have to have a greater than 50% BNR average. There are lots of pros who aren't averaging that.

I guess by his standards of a pro level player, there would be very few pro level players here in the US. I do not know. I am not even sure if SVB is that good. How many players in the US are there that play as strong (and consistent) as SVB?

Although I will agree to the statement that this IS a lot of Semi-Pro players in this country and that's what most fail to see and accept. Not quite good enough to really be considered to be a top pro, but way better than most makes the player a semi-pro....or, in between.

I'd say fifty to a hundred, probably closer to the higher number. Just about every city has one or two guys that can play even with the top players. You may not hear as much about them but they are out there laying in wait.
Even on the various regional tours, there are always eight to ten pro level players competing. It's not easy for even a top player to win one of these events. Take for example last weeks Swanee tourney with Bustamante and Gallego both competing. You would think one of them would win, but Brian Parks demolished Francisco and left him in fourth place. In the Texas Open the same weekend Manny Chau took it down and poor little Dennis Orcullo also finished fourth.

On second thought, my estimate is probably still to low. Taking the entire country into consideration, there may be a few hundred capable of winning matches against top ranked pros. There's a lot of good pool players in the US, more than in any other country by far. Problem is that most of them are not interested in traveling the world to make a living. They either have jobs, families or other reasons for staying close to home. Maybe they just like that home cooking! Beating the roads playing pool is a hard way to make an easy living.

If you sat down and thought about it , you could probably come up with 100 pro or high semi pro speed players who don't even play any more, in the US.

My question is about the players that are still very active (in their free time) in the sport of pool. I understand that you really need to be active to stay at a high skill level. I might be wrong about that though (after hearing about all the crazy old stories about hustlers that never practiced, and could get up there and run 30 racks of 9 ball, any day of the week). Some of these stories are so far fetched, that they are just unbelievable to me though. How can a player play at that high of a level, and never practice?

How about known US players that really appear to be professional. The ones that seem to have seemingly perfect mechanics on the pool table, and who seem to be very classy in general (with the way they act, the way they treat their fans, and the way they dress, and the manor that they handle themselves). The type that any parent would be very proud of, and the type that any young junior player would look up to. The type that corporate sponsors would look at to endorse their product. I think those things are much more important then being able to out run the ghost in a race to 10, without ball in hand.

I can think of at least 1 other player, with those standards (in my mind). Skyler Woodward.

Are you referring to corporate sponsor's inside this industry, or outside of it?

I have to believe there's more out there that play "pro speed" than people think.

There are about 325 million people in the U.S. so if 1 in a million can play pro speed then there's 325.

I would suspect there are quite a few old farts around that nobody ever heard of and who never go to tournaments that run rack after rack in their basements and could give a lot of "pro's" a run for their money.

Stan Shuffett (Landon's dad) decided to play in the U.S. Open three years ago and finished 9-12th! He beat several top players along the way.

If that is true, then the level of competition must be pretty weak in AZ. I understand what you mean though.

There must not be many actual AZ residents reading this thread, now I have not lived in AZ in quite some time. But just off the top of my head I can think of nearly 20 people that fit the bill you laid out. or are actual pros. Scott Frost, Mitch Ellerman, Bobby Emmons, Bret Huth, Jimmy Mendoza, Chuck Evans, Mike Pankof, Bernie Pettiepiece, Tres Kane, Mike Sandoval, Ben Hrabina, Stevie Glenn to name a few. However, AZ uses a different rating system than the one you have cited. so just beware when wading into that "soft action" while in Arizona ;)

Jay, I finished 17th at the Swanee. I was playing pretty bad on Sunday after not sleeping all night from the adrenaline pump. After losing to Brian I had no clue who Gallego was. I had never heard of him. I played some really strong safeties on him and he would kick the ball in or reverse them on me. Wow was that guy good! Brian is a very straight shooter and I'm glad he did so well.

I know Steve Glenn personally, and he wouldnt call himself a Pro by any means. How many of the players you listed could beat the 10 ball ghost with no racking aid and no BIH to start with in a race to 10?

well yeah.....Eva missed the 90s boom by generation gap.....but dayum JL got serious weight from the former misses pete the painter in the puuuuurrrdddyyy dept....probably on table too lol. Picking aside Janette has been a great ambassador for the sport, regardless of any skill level of play she def deserves to be in the hall for that alone. Right next to a pic of the dick she drew on that pattern one time......dayum that was funny chit

i still swear the girls kept my balls from getting sliced off when i first moved to tulsa years ago before i knew really anyone at all there. But i worked my lil spring chicken nuts off all the time too.

we've seen plenty of can't make a ball chicks get attention in our world because T&A.......if a man did those same things he would be laughed off the reservation like Mike Deschaine roflmao.

Im well sure that there are quite a few hundreds of people in the USA who are beyond mastery of the art and skill of pocket billiards in the USA.....my personal take is you don't have to make a living to be considered professional at it....the NCAA chops your nuts off after the first dollar lol, and sometimes it don't even take a buck.

Theres also the ideas that pro isn't just skill set....its acting professionally so if thats also a marker then pop goes the balloon and were down the majority of quality skilled players.

If your mastery is without doubts and your breadth deep and wide you are of the right stuff for me to say "thats a pro caliber player there"......short stops are semi pros......which is still a pro. Not big league....but still pro. I just think the hair splitting is a bunch of crap some Ed's need to have so they can justify something without any pro tour lol.

Random thought: the games equal for everyone why the hell would a woman have a less obstacle to become "pro caliber" player since generally speaking their fields and opponents in the open and pro events are not as good as their male counterparts? does having a vagina make the pro entry in fargo (720ish) drop 50 points to 670 as an example?

see wtf i mean lol

If there was a skill level test required before each Pro tournament being held and only the top 64 players get in, there'd be a lot showing up thinking they belong, and a whole lot going home after they found out they dont really belong.

Why do you keep going on and on with this nonsense? There's probably not a player in the world who can consistently beat the 10 ball ghost that way. Give it a rest already

yea they don't even give worth of dam tests for letting complete imbeciles on oil/gas production platforms......

that same skills test for pool exists already....

and its tougher than what you just mentioned lol

whens the last time you seen a tourney pay out 64 places?

Not really don't belong...more work better and harder. Its all semantics anyways. That knob can be turned up until theres only one highlander who can call him her self pro.

Can you be a pro caliber player and not play one pocket or LR banks at a moderately high level? Like some 9 ball cinderella dressed in yella who don't know the passover jump etc lol:sorry:
