I think it was Joe Tucker who posted a thread about a very common layout and it made me realize the value of talking about such scenarios. Below is a common 3-ball out with ball-in-hand. How would you play this and why? What are your concerns?

I actually like these outs because I am very comfortable doing it this way.
I would cut the 7 in the corner with a little low right and bring the cue ball down to around even with the side pocket.
From there it is a very similar shot on the 8 in the corner with nearly automatic position on the 9.
I can guarantee others will have different and possibly better, less risky, ways but this is what I like to do here.
Thanks,
Koop

I like your solution, since all the work is done on the seven ball with ball in hand.Koop said:Hey Jude,

What I like most about your answer is how you use the side-pocket as a position-reference. You know if you go past the side-pocket, you've likely gone too far. I like the way you play this. The only thing I might add is I would want to keep the cueball off the rail.
The other route I would consider would be to set-up a slight angle and use follow, going off the short rail and traveling parallel back down table to arrive at the same destination.
TATE said:Like Koop, I would use slightly low right on the 7 to leave this. My only concern would be overshooting the position. I would have to overshoot it a lot though so the margin for error is quite large.

Jude Rosenstock said:The only thing I don't like about this is your plan to fall perfect. The shot on the 8-ball is very makeable even if you fall a foot short and you'll still get position on the 9-ball. If you end up going to far, you're in for some serious trouble.
Andrew Manning said:Really? Would you consider this shot trouble? I'm not trying to be sarcastic, just curious about what you were thinking.

If you look at that side pocket and think, "Don't go past it", you're going to guarantee the out.
