Pool might have a shot at comming back....somewhat. Here is why...

The ecomnomy is getting tough, we have gas going up at the pumps in the winter its been over 20 ears since thats happened, it awalys goes up in the spring before everyone takes off, interest rates are low so they cant lower them much more to off set the slow down created by high oil prices etc etc...es i did have alot of economic classes I failed in college but dosent mean i didnt learn anything i just got bad grades, i had other prioritys...pool.

ok Fatboy where you going with this? well since I beelieve were in for tough times, people wont be able to buy new cars and hang out in car clubs, buy boats, travel as much etc. And pool is a cheap local easy form of recreation, granted we have been seeing alot of pool room closed down that dosent mean the tables that were in them are going to disappear, there will be new pool rooms open in lower rent areas, hell rents might drop a little. all these factors might just might bring a few people back to pool that were out doing other more expensive things the past 10-15 years.

The poker fad seems to be losing steam too, and that hurt pool, darts, you name it it took ALOT of people away from other activitys there is only 24 ours a day for each of us, and how we spend them depends on how were holding, believe me I have been on both ends and pool aint gonna die, i believe that when pool was strongest was during the depression. well?????

...now all we need is a good pool movie to come out and BAM!

Hustler = 60's Boom.
COM = 80's Boom.
What's going to set off the 00's Boom?!?!?

Come on Jennifer Barretta...we need your movie!

I'd be surprised if that movie spurts another boom. What we need is Paul Newman in another followup where he plays an aging pool room owner in the middle of nowhere that discovers a hot new kid that goes on to show the rest of the world (aka all the super hot non-US pool shooters nowadays) that we still have it.

Good follow up, and it'll play to american ego:)

No, I think what pool needs in this day and age is not another follow up but a tv drama series that takes place in a pool room and follows the lives of the grinders and rail birds in a pool hall. There's enough real drama in any pool hall in America that they wouldn't need the writer;s so screww the writer's guild strike. That is what is needed to bring the new generation of pool players into the fold. After their in, the addictiveness of great pool will take over.

Yes! The antagonist could be an Iraqi backed by Bin Laden and the kid ends up busting him, winning all of Al-Qaeda's money, which results in winning the War on Terror! :D :D :D

Just kidding. I do like your idea. :)

What about Danny Basavich's movie? Could that be the shot in the arm? Poker would counter with Scotty Ngen bio or something. Did the barbox scene die down in anyones area? No matter what poolrooms are doing, the bars with a couple of tables always seem to have people playing and good tournament turn outs. How long did the COM boom last?
Let's hope for a good winter pool season.

Reality TV

How about reality TV taking place in a pool hall run by Jay Helfert and the kitchen run Smorgass Bored. :eek:

Not that I really enjoy mentioning the IPT, but Kevin was planning on doing that on the tour, basically making a reality tv series out of it...

Absolutely correct (JMHO)...

If the television audience got caught up in a week to week sitcom/drama (that embraces the full spectrum of "the Game"), the knowledge & understanding of "the Game" would rise. When the rules are better understood & the ability to play GAME is better understood, by the television audience, "the Game" will GROW....

A great series would increase the interest of the televison audience & could become a springboard for the Professional Player to make guest appearances. Thereby offering the Pros a way to make some money.

DEFINITION of Full Spectrum - Different Games, Pros, Tournaments, Intermediates, Beginners, Upscale & Low Rent Pool Rooms, Instructors with a lesson or two thrown in, Cue Makers & Design, Gamblers, Rail Birds & Obnoxious Wannabees.

Kevin has a new project in the works, I spoke to him but that want the reason for our meeting. We were discussing data for mass marketing efforts(one of his businesses overlaps with one of mine) and the pool topic came up in the meeting briefly, I have no business affiliation with him, I met him through a data magment company and were trying to do a deal that has NOTHING to do with pool. In our brief meeting we did talk about pool for 3 minutes and he outlined his new plan, I cant say what it is-I gave him my word. I know this is a very sensitive area, I'm not involved, i will not be involved, he didnt ask me to get involved, we didnt discuss the IPT. He told me of his new idea for pool, I gave him my word I wouldnt mention it, he knows the IPT thing(which I know little about) has to be settled. But he does have a plan and it sounded good, it will be months away perhaps a year. We then continued out meeting about other matters. I dont know him, perhaps his people will work with my people on the data-that is the extent of my relationship with KT. However I will say what he has in mind should work and the players will not be at risk like last time(thats my understanding as I said I dont know about the IPT), but he does have a good idea.

Please dont shoot the messanger.

Absolutely! I didn't want to come off all high and mighty. I'm not perfect by any means. My heads been hurting all day probably from all the late night pool watching this week, so that probably has something to do with my post. When am I gonna get a ride in the Lambo?:D I know a lot of streets in Houston that are flat and straight.;)

I really like the reality TV series but what about a movie with Paul Newman as someone mentioned. Take up where COM left off with Eddie is making his comeback and tapering off due to the bad elements again. Then enters young SVB the 'good guy'. Non-smoking, non-drinking, drug free kid who along with Eddie battles the 'bad element' who smoke, drink, fight, curse, steal, deal drugs, and everything else one could imagine.

Do you think something like this would help reshape the stereotype of pool?

I'm not shoting the messenger at all, but I think with Kevin it might be a case of "too little - too late". He had the opportunity to protect the players during the first go round and he laughed at it and boldly chose not to. He openly and publicly chastised the people that encouraged the players to protect themselves. After everything the players have been through, I'm not so sure that many of them would ever trust him again. I am interested in seeing what he has to offer, and my offer still stands on organizing something designed to protect the interests of the players.

The no drinking, smoking, drugging almost sounds like Scientology. Maybe We could get Tom Cruise to reprise his role as Vincent.

Not sure about Scientology but we definitely need someone who can ACTUALLY SHOOT POOL to star in it. Fatboy could pay for SVB some acting lessons and then WA LA we have a movie.:D ;)
