I just beat Earl Strickland in 2 games of nine ball.

Jamie must feel like the kid walking the County Fair Grounds with the biggest balloon on a string, all smiles. Then some nasty kids stick his Jack Knife Blade into the Balloon, Boon, and the smiles disappears.

That actually happened to me when I was 10. I was with my brother who was 8 leaving a shopping center. We had just bought 2 giant ballons at TG&Y and were walking on the sidewalk outside the stores. A group of 4 or 5 teenagers walked by us the opposite direction and one of them popped my balloon. I was a big kid and I wasn't afraid to fight. I jumped on his back and pounded his head. The other kids stayed out of it - they were rooting for me. I fought the guy to a standstill, and used my weight to slam him into a coin operated horse ride. They got in a car and left making fun of the guy the whole time. I had a bloody lip and bloody knuckles but I guarantee you that was the last balloon that guy ever popped.

Not to change the subject here, but I would like to know (in general) what the source of friction was between you and Mike. I've always found him to be a pretty easy going guy, religious.

When Mike Massey was in his Tennessee Tarzan days he was an aggressive $ player.
...still a good guy...but a different personality.
He beat a guy in Wichita for $800, stood at the door and gave it away to people leaving..
...he said he hated the guy so much he wanted to bust him...but didn’t want his $$$...
...he just didn’t want him to have it.

He spent some time drying out...found God...and quit gambling.

Oh wow, I had a PM with Hu- yep, he had his issues early on. Here's a bit on it:

Awesome once you become the world champion sign me up.

Hell, I’m just an every day banger. Since you can “beat” a world champion, maybe you can give me some weight and we can play some cheap $50 sets if you’d rather...

;)

How was Shane playing? Did he break and run a bunch?

Honestly I can't remember I was there watching but I had to look over a guys head so it was hard for me to see. I wish they would have live streamed so you guys could have seen.

Shane played really well and hardly can recall more than 2 misses in a race to 17. He was making everything on a standard 9ft diamond!

Just so we are all clear I won on luck and not skill at all.

I think I will start playing nine ball.

hehe, so basically you are saying the game that you can play with no skill is the game for you. Sounds like you will fit in with other league players alright. They also try to win without using skill.

Just need to avoid the many tournaments that use a called 9 ball rule, almost all of the ones in my area (and I would guess many other places) play 9 ball with called 9, 9 spots on the break. Our USAPL league rules also use a called 9 format, to prevent luck from winning the game.

Thank you Tanner! This Orcullo match should be good.

Do you think Earl may have let you win? If so, that's known as an "Efren". That's OK. They sometimes gives us amateurs a chance to make us look and feel good.

Years back Cliff Thorburn was in town doing an exhibition. They drew names (maybe 5 or 6) to see who would play a game of 9 ball against Cliff. When this part of the show starts my friend Darryl (who managed the hall and set up the show) leans over and whispers to me "Cliff will give everyone an extra chance, but pay attention to how he does it". I watched and sure enough, Cliff is running balls then slams one in letting the cue ball run around 4 rails for position but scratches in the corner. He played several spectacular scratches, it was pleasure to watch how he handed out ball-in-hand.

Dave <-- beat Cliff ... heck has never lost to Cliff ! :)

PS: Stu, I got a signed picture of Cliff for "winning" the game, it also says "Well played Dave" .... well played by Cliff IMO, and you as well

I LIKE this rule! I am just a banger, casual player, and I really don't like 9-ball just for the reason that any random fluke can win a game.
I'm in my mid 60's and play to stay (somewhat) active and to have something to work at to "get better."
I don't play "against" the other guy at the table. I play against the table and my current skill/ability level, trying to get better.
