I'd really like some advice on buying a cue

I would recommend Lucasi or Viking. These are both excellent cues for the money. Since you already have experience with a Lucasi it might feel a bit more natural to you. If you buy from us we have some great deals on free cases and shipping going, especially with the Lucasi's.

If you like the Lucasi, maybe you should get another Lucasi. If you order a cue from many of the online retailers, they'll give you a money back guarantee on whatever cue you decide to buy. If you don't like, you can ship and back and exchange it for another cue.

Pooldawg gives you a 60 day money back no hassle guarantee. That's where I buy almost all my pool gear from. I bought my current shooting cue, break cue, and jump cue from them.

I bought this Mezz cue from pooldawg last december. $436 and a damn good cue.

I love my Mezz cue, as they are high quality cues and very reasonably priced.

Hey everyone, I've never actually posted here, but I have enjoyed browsing the forums over the last couple months. You guys definitely have a cool community going here and there is clearly tons that has been taught and learned here.

Here's the deal. My mom broke up with her boyfriend, who owned a nice cue, and I've been playing with it for roughly 5 months. I'm not sure what it is, other than it's a Lucasi and it cost $280(maybe someone can identify it from that information). It's pretty kickass, and now he wants it back, but he said I can use it until I buy a new one. Unfortunately for me, I don't even know where to start. I hope that someone can point me in the right direction. I'd love to be able to buy a cue as nice as the one I'm currenty using. I don't know exactly if that's necessarily the best cue I can get for that amount of money. Maybe there is something of better value I can get for around that much. Anyway, I hope you guys can help me out here :)

If anyone has any questions at all, ask away.

Thanks a lot

-Peter

Anything with a commonly used joint and you should be in good shape both short term and long. It'll be easier to upgrade if you should want to.

Vikings and Lucasi are both pretty good choices.

If you're thinking about a different cue than the Lucasi, you might want to think about whether you want a wrap or wrapless. A totally subjective thing. If your hands sweat a lot, then you'd probably be better off with a wrap. If your hands tends to be relatively dry, a wrapless might be the way to go.

Good luck!

I hod posted a nice reply for you here, but it got lost somewhere in the internet...

Anyway, feel free to send a PM or e-mail and I'll be happy to help you with your decision!

While you have the Lucassi in your possesion, get all the dimensional and weight details as that information will help you a lot moving forward.

Good luck!

Pete, all I can say you do not have to spend a great deal of money on your first cue. Stay away from designs and focus as much as possible on a cues playability. Lucas cues are starter cues, for the money along with McDermott's and many others. Below is a link to website where you can buy almost anything you would like. The people are honest and their customer service is great, in addition their prices are hard to beat anywhere on the INTERNET.

Good Luck

I am assuming from your post you are under 18. I don't know what kind of player that you are but $300 for a cue at your age doesn't seem necessary. Also it is easy to get impressed by the "expensive" cue that your mother's boyfriend has.

When I was a kid I was impressed by a 4 piece cue that had a lot of washers in the joints to adjust the weight.

Take your time and keep doing the research like you are now doing. Don't jump on anything just to have a cue.

Keep playing with that cue. I don't know who broke up with who or what your feelings were about that guy but I think his motive is a reason to still have a "in" with your mother.

Thanks a lot guys for your time and advice! I think my mom and I will head up to Flagstaff(I live in Prescott) and take a look at the billiard shops there. I really like the Lucasi, but it's the only real cue I've ever used, so I don't really know if I'll like other cues in the same price range better. By the way, the cue is this one http://www.billiardwarehouse.com/cues/lucasi/lucasi-l-p30.htm

Pater,

I have a new L-E56 which I got for my daughter about 2 years ago. She is no longer interested. Never played with 19 oz. if that is the one you like, I can make you a deal.

I've used a Lucasi for a few years in the last 90's. Very nice cue, IMHO. Post pictures of the Lucasi that you are currently using so that we can see what type of joint and features that you might be interested in. That might help in the suggestions. Do you have access to a weight scale to weight both the shaft and the butt end of the cue? Ask the owner what type of tip and ferrule is on the cue if he changed it. Might help with getting your future cue to hit the same or similar.

If you are on a limited budget, considering a J&J Jump/Break cue, Model# 4410 or # 4414. I personally have a Model# 4414 and its a great playing cue as well as jump and break. I use an Aegis ferrule with a triangle tip on it. J&J has both break shafts and regular shafts for this cue. I use regular shafts. For a little extra, you can get a spare shaft in case the tip comes off or the ferrule cracks. The stock 5th avenue tip and the original PVC ferrule on the regular playing shaft isn't too bad for normal play.

My 1st cue was a J&J model# 3613, no long in production but was a great playing cue for starting out with and learning about shaft and tip/ferrule maintenance. I still have that cue and plan to take it to the grave with me.

Lucasi isn't a bad cue. You should be able to find one for less than $280. For that price range I would get a no frills Schon. The Schon has a better reputation and better resale value than the Lucasi.

But that's only my opinion and I can barely run two balls.

How long have you played and how often do you play? Whether you are a casual player or want to become a serious player can make a difference in the amount of money you should/could spend on a cue. There are several decent production cues you can choose from. One word of advise, stay away from Predator, at least until you have played considerably longer than I think you probably have. They aren't for everybody, and if you start off with one it may be quite a bit harder to change to something else. Again, they aren't for everybody.
Good luck!

I've been somewhat exposed to pool since I was about 9 or 10(I turned 16 yesterday, for reference), but I've really started picking up my frequency and level of play over the last year or so. I made a decision that I want to be a serious player and hopefully make a living out of it(as hard as I'm sure that is). I play as much as I possibly can, which is usually 3-6 hours on Saturday and another 3-6 on Sunday. During the week it's a little tougher to get out, since I'm at school, but I sneak in a good 5 or 6 hours during the week, often neglecting my homework . I'm probably not a good player by the standards on here, but I'm hard pressed to find somone at the bars I go to(with parental supervision) who can beat me consistantly. I can run out a rack of 8 ball and 9 ball, although not terrificly often(maybe 5%). Also, what's the deal with Predator? I've heard they have low deflection shafts??

They do. But, low deflection shafts don't play well for some people. The general opinion is you either love them or hate them. They just aren't something I would suggest you buy unless you've had a chance to play with one for several hours, at least. They "feel" a lot different. There are a lot of people here who swear by them and others who don't. I played with one on a Joss sneaky pete butt for several months and did not play well with it. A friend from PA bought one at the same time, had the same experience. If you buy a decent production cue, you can switch to a predator shaft later if you really want to. They can be made to fit about anything. If you like steel joints, I'd suggest Schon or Joss. Schon makes great cues, I just don't like the hit, personally. Joss also makes a wood to wood joint, now. Look around, try several different cues, then check online for the best price on the one you like.

Pete, I really like your attitude and I do believe you for some reason I do not know why that you have what it takes to be a Great player some day. I also find it refreshing to find a younger poster on this forum who presents himself in the manner that you have done here.

So save your money and send me a Pm with your adress and I will send you a new cue and a case for free, the only strings attached are that if you ever become famous you have to promise that you will wear a patch with the name of my Pool Room and retail store when playing in the Pro-events.

I am serious so get your address to me, so that we can get you set up to kick some butt!!!.

Hope to here from soon and Happy Birthday!!

Take Care Craig

Manwon, hats off to you good sir. Rep is in your box, your generosity is a great thing to see in our world today. May I suggest also, one day when Pete gets older and is in good financial position and he see a spitting image of himself in some youngster in the position he is in right now, he would pass on the generosity shown to him?

I'd just like to extend my gratitude to you publicly. Thank you so much Craig, I feel like I'm just starting a new chapter in my pool game, as well as in my life, and I feel so lucky to have even strangers like you supporting me in my journey to be a better player. Thanks again!

Craig...don't forget to include that patch! I expect we may see it on live stream in a few short years. A tip of my hat to you!
