Not long ago, a local hustler asked me if I wanted to race...I looked at his beater Toyota and told him I thought it was a mismatch. Would have been in pool too.

He's probably a good player and has you clocked perfectly. Someone has steered him to you. Slow play him then ask for some weight.

You can not tell how some stranger plays until you are betting money, there are several things to look for to tell how good he is , even when he is laying down!.

I always felt that if I didn't know who some pool player was, i had the best of it, until he showed me different!

Gary abood came in our pool room, nobody knew him, so we started playing even 1 pocket, for 50 a game for awile, after being even for a couple of hours, we had the bet up to 300 a game and then he showed his speed , i know i couldn't win even, i was up a couple of games then he got even and i quit.

Of course after that match i called a few friends and found out his true speed, i was told i needed 9-7 10- 8 to get there, Abood comes in the pool room a couple days later and i told him i will bet high if you played me 9-7 and he said no but i will give you 10-8, so we played a race to 5 for 2000 me getting 10-8, i won the set 5-4.

We played a year later at 10 -8 for 2500 and he beat me 6-5.

if someone approaches me to gamble....they are an 'a' player....or they want weight :)

Here ya go.....

When he comes up too you:

Say yes, i will play for 5.00 a game.

If he chuckles and walks away, pro level money player
If he says okay, then beats your brains in...A player.. Tournament minded
If he says okay and loses 20-40 hustler....
No B/C player is walking around asking strangers to match up...So eliminate those two right off the bat.
Moral of this lesson? If your worried about which one he is, then you can't win. {: Its a hustler or a A+ player.

Simple as that, you heard it here first.

I'm a B player and I just got done asking people to gamble at a pool room I'd never been in.

You don't have to be a good pool player to gamble.
But it takes a good gambler to win.

Totally agree. I can't speak for the B players yet but as a C player (at least for a few weeks longer) we don't go looking to gamble very often. I have played for drinks, odd dares and other lightweight bets but definitely not for anything like $5 a game yet. Its not even about the money. I think its a confidence thing.

I did win a shot from a B player the other night in 8 ball so I can see the appeal but I don't have the confidence to start approaching anyone out of the blue like that.

I was just about to post something like this. I'm a B player, and have asked people to gamble hundreds of times. Especially if Im in a sports bar and there are people playing on the beer boxes.

 Well i stand corrected, The pool-halls are just filled with b-c players ready to gamble it up!

I've made some really good scores where the person asked me to play, a couple of them couldn't run three balls they just wanted to gamble.....

Well I can't speak for C players, but for B to B+ I see them ask strangers to gamble all the time. ( Me being one of them )

I guess they'll stay C players if they're scared all their life. Most players in a pool room are B to B+ with a few exceptions. I stay in the grease like a burnt French Fry.
