If you call a hard shot and the ball goes into the pocket, why is it luck?

How does calling it make it NOT luck? Calling it doesn't mean anything. I can call the next number in a game of roulette and your saying if it comes up, it was some kind of skill.

:)

If it's a skill then you can shoot it and make it 5-10 times in row without missing.

Apples and oranges.... the roulette wheel is luck because you had nothing to do with the outcome except pick a number. The pool shot, you had EVERYTHING to do with the outcome.

He was able to pick the outcome so is it not skill?

I am thinking there are a lot of people that don't believe in "luck" what is luck anyway?

There's a big difference between a low percentage shot, a 'hail mary' or getting plain old lucky. Neil summed it up very well, hitting just about every nail on the head.. maybe he got lucky with words.

The other day, I tried a tough straight-back that was a low percentage for me. It double-kissed and took a second rail into another pocket. That was luck.

There are plenty of tough shots that I can make less than 50%, but to say that I'm lucky for making them couldn't be further from the truth.

Edit: As for your post above.. picking the number 12 because that's a number you like, that's luck if it comes up. Picking the number 12 because you know that it's come up slightly more often than the rest, that's involving skill in the use of numbers/odds.

Because you are not favored to make it. The required luck is inversely proportional to your skill level to make the shot.

Meaning, you shot a hard bank, kick, cut, or long shot and you make it people watching say you made a lucky shot. How could it be luck when you called the shot?

The best shot I ever made in a tournament....
...a bunch of us tried it about 50 times after and couldn't make it...
...including me.

But I played the shot and I made it, under heat.
I accept responsibility for all the horrible shots I've hit....
...so I'm taking credit for all the good ones also.

Says who? How do you know I don't have a mathematical formulation and protocol for picking numbers ?

Ever see a dog on YouTube shoot pool?

Sure, that's certainly a skill. ;)

Thats bs ..now multiple people have said that same silly statement. If I shoot a kick shot that im guessing at and I make it ILL BE THE FIRST PERSON TO SAY IT WAS LUCK! I'm not upset when someone gets lucky..thats a part of the game. Were not talking about a low percentage shot that you know how to shoot but is just a tough low percentage shot. I'm talking about a shot you are guessing at what english to use or where to hit the rail and you get LUCKY and guess right. That doesn't make you good lol it makes you lucky.

Using the word luck in that statement is a way of psychologically dampening the fact that you just made a low percentage shot.

You won't make it most of the time. The guy is just upset you made it on him because the other larger percentage of the time he would be back at the table.

That's an important distinction, and part of why I disagree...
You have control over a lot of the factors (where you aim, how hard you hit).
But not over EVERY factor. It's the uncontrollable ones that determine whether the shot could be called lucky or not.

For example, I can reasonably be expected to send the object ball to a 5 mm area on the rail to make a certain bank. That's humanly possible. Not a luck shot.

I cannot send the object ball to a 5 mm area on the 4th rail at warp speed to make a razor thin 4-rail combination/cut. Just not humanly possible. Luck if that shot goes... even if I spent the rest of my life practicing it I can't make such a shot even 1% of the time. Something as minor as humidity or a chalk smudge could ruin it.

Its luck because I didn't make it. If I made it, its skill. But because YOU made it, its luck.

In all seriousness, its not entirely luck. You had the skill to know what to do and how to pull it off. But people call it luck because despite having that knowledge and skill, you likely couldn't do it 2 or 3 more times in 10 attempts.

It may be a low percentage shot - but even those one in a thousand chances occur once in a thousand :)

If you do get successful on such a shot - it might be worth while to set up that shot on the practice table and work on changing it to a once in a hundred

When you attempt a low percentage shot, you need luck on your side to make the shot. You are lucky when you make it, because the odds are against you when you attempt the shot.

Ironically, you can miss any shot on the pool table - so there really is an aspect of luck in almost any shot no matter how easy it is.

True but....A nice shot is still a nice shot.

The rail birds need not point out the luck factor.Give the shooter his due...great shot.Has anyone ever had some1 tell em "nice shot" but you know what they meant was -dumb shot your lucky you made it.

Didn't have the time to read all the responses but I have a canned line for when stuff like that happens. I always say "It was just like I planned but not like I expected" :grin-square:

Sounds good to me! You did what you had to do.... Simply put!

I like what you say. When I make these shots I keep on like nothing extra even happened! I only practice banks, kicks, and real hard cut shots. The rest is automatic.

And your opponent is sitting there thinking "look at this lucky @#$% acting like he is Efren Reyes now!"

I don't know where you play Lock, that people feel like that.

Yesterday, I played in a year end League Tourney, which we won from Dead Last.

I made a few Finger crosser, Hail Mary shots and all I heard was, Good shot, Terry. From my opponent and from people on opposing teams.

We do the same when our opponent makes a great shot or watching a game between our adversaries.

We don't do that s hit to each other in our League so this type of action is kind of new to me.

Well, I had one ranter that I posted about a few weeks ago but is not generally the rule.
