If you call a hard shot and the ball goes into the pocket, why is it luck?

IMHO I would never call that a lucky shot. If you call a bank and instead you make a 3 rail bank to the pocket you called.... that's a lucky shot. I've spent days just practicing "lucky shots". If I'm shooting pool with my oldest daughter and I tell her I don't want to cut the nine to the bottom right pocket (because I may scratch), I am going to use a 2 rail bank to get there instead. After I made the shot and the pocket, we know that was not luck. To me pool is a game of probabilities not lucky shots.

About a year ago I read an interview with Efren Reyes, he was quoted as saying "If I see someone make a lucky shot or a shot that I thought was impossible, I will go home and try to repeat that shot until I figure it out." I'm no Efren but I can see more possibilities on the table after reading that article.

Hi Brother LOCK, another great thread!

I like when iam playing 1 pocket and i make some crazy shot that goes in my pocket and my opponent says man you are lucky, then i say well iam not aiming for your hole.

There are so many shots in 1 pocket that allow you to move balls towards your hole, so when 1 falls in some think you got lucky, well its my hole and iam aiming for my hole!

Meaning, you shot a hard bank, kick, cut, or long shot and you make it people watching say you made a lucky shot. How could it be luck when you called the shot?

Yeah, if you hit a 10 to 1 shot in anything...pool, poker, horseracing, etc. it's lucky. But for some folks, that 10 to 1 shot in pool is more like 2 to 1.

Internet, sometimes, between the storms. I had to get a dish to get internet service. Dang near need satellite for the phone, my cell works sometimes, maybe, when it is in the mood. I considered a land line but figured it would be too hard to get Mr. Drucker off the phone so I could talk.

Oh yeah, no sasquathes yet, I did have a bear of the four legged hairy kind a few hundred yards up the road the other night.

Agree. If I call a 3 rail kick which I might make 10% of the time,because it's the only option I can see, and it goes, I consider myself lucky.

If a player pulls off a 100 to 1 shot, it should be worthy of applause.
The people that disparage such an event should really take a good hard
look at themselves......the reason is usually jealousy.

Exactly. It's just poor sportsmanship.

Maybe luck played a part, or maybe the player pulled it all together and executed the shot skillfully. If he can't make that shot again five times in a row, it doesn't necessarily mean that he didn't pull it together on that one shot that he made. On the other hand, a simple straight-in shot from a foot away would be luck if he hit the cue ball off center but made the shot by catching the side of the pocket.
