Incardona to McWhorter

Sorry, I don't want to derail the thread, but this is something I've always wondered about.

I get that it's considered rude, I'm just puzzled as to why.
People ask all the time "what do you do for a living?" ... that isn't considered rude. That is practically the exact same question as "how do you make your money" (I think most people assume you make your money from your job)

If you're saying a person in the pool world might have made his money some other (illegal way)... I guess asking him the innocent question might put the guy on the spot and make him feel embarassed, but we're all pool players here and I don't think anyone would be embarrassed to say "I made a ton of money from pool action". In fact it's something they might say with pride.

Really I don't put "where'd you make your money?" any higher on the offend-o-meter than "where'd you buy those shoes?" I'm just applying the golden rule and asking myself honestly "if someone asked me this question, would I feel offended?"

I might say to a pool room owner, "I know this room cost a pretty penny, and those Diamond Pro tables don't come cheap !" , but I WOULD NEVER say, "Where'd ya' get the cash for this place Billy ?". First of all, if he wanted me to know he'd tell me. Secondly, it's none of my business. Last but not least, it's just NOT DONE ! It's one of those things that is like asking the price of a boat, if you need to ask you can't afford it. In this case, if I have to tell you why, you may never get it ! Like I said, it's in bad taste. IT'S PRIVATE ! Maybe the guy was a drug dealer, or a bookie. Think he's gonna tell you ? Think he wants you to ask ? Nope. Somewhere along the line, when they were teaching basic manners, you missed class that day :D . Trust me, it's not done...Tom

Or maybe there is more than one partner that owns the room....you guys are all idiots...Who cares where his money came from.... Either post up or shut up about it...He is a great guy and he's been around for a long time of course he knows how to match up....Think before you talk people...and by the way we're still waiting for those big names to come to Dallas...once again Billy had to go somewhere else for action...

Thats how we do it in dallas :D

Seems like the young man should get a little air, and maybe a little less tutoring.

His question might be lacking tact in its current form, but perhaps he is asking for guidance from someone that appears to have been successful in a very difficult profession. Perhaps he could ask the question in a more appropriate manner and I'm sure Billy won't mind giving some advice to a young man looking to do what he has done.

Lighten up guys, his hormones haven't tailed off yet.:)

idiots huh? would i be an idiot if i inquired the owner of a restaurant how he got started or a mechanic shop owner how he came out on top? i dont like resorting to name calling and just because i asked a question that YOU and others find taboo, I see no reason to call someone else names.

I think it would have been rude of me to ask how much he has, but not how he got it. When some people see what I drive or the house i live in, they ask what do I do for a living but they dont ask how much I make. Isnt that the same as asking "how do you get your money?". Just think about how many times you have asked someone what they do for a living. What are you asking? You are basically asking how do you get money. Thats all I asked. Should I ask it like that? Billy, what do you do for a living? Does that make everyone happy? I am not dying to find out, it was just mere curiosity. Forget I asked.

No one ever said he wasnt a great guy. Im from Dallas and have had the pleasure of watching him play quite a few times. He is always a gentleman and he is quick to answer any questions railbirds like myseld may have.

Does he give lessons by any chance? He probably has forgotten more about pool than most of us will ever know.

If anyone is curious as the where I get my money or my backing feel free to ask. No shame in my game.

No shame in my game?? What exactly does that mean? That could very easily be interpeted as a slandering inference. I was once accused of being a hit man for the mob, taking down knockers and mud-slinging people. But both you and I know that's not true.Do you personally think that would be scary if it was??

Omerta my friend, Omerta!

I think the poster was asking How does one make it in the pool world. I just got out of the hospital about 7 months ago and had a whopping $27,000 bill not to mention follow ups and such. My union medical coverage took care of the whole thing. I see the dentist 3 times a year for cleaning. And my medical coverage takes care of it. Eye care as well. How in this day and age can someone like Billy, Keith, Jay, etc take care of all these necessities.
I also get a monthly retirement check and at 65 will get a nice check srom Soc Sec. These are the things that took me out of the pool hall when I was in my teens.
How do you do it Billy. I admire you following your dream.

Exactly my thinking.

This is the reason why alot pro players won't post here. It's because don't show them much respect. I can't believe the lack of respect Billy is getting from a few people in this thread.

tell'em you sell tomatoes

Hey Billy, just tell them you sell tomatoes! It worked for a good family man down here, Uncle Carlos, for many years. When the fed's started chasing him hard they tracked his cash and figured he had close to half a million a year income. He looked them dead in the eye and told them he sold a lot of tomatoes! :D :D :D

Attributes ?

In the words of kilojo420:
"Not to pry or be overly nosey but, how does or how did Billy get attributes ? Commentating, investments, years of hard work? I just dont see accu-stats shelling out the big attributes for commentators, but I guess if you do it year round at all the big tourneys it will pay off.

I know he just opened a room and although he probably has investors and loans it still could not have been easy on the attributes.

The main reason I ask is because maybe like many of you I would like to have attributes when I retire or get close to retirement and would just like to see how one certain individual did it."

I think Billy should write a book and then make a movie..... imo

Thanks for your concern, but I'm not exactly missing any meals, and I won't be sleeping in the street any time soon. I've owned four poolrooms/sports bars. I own my own home and have a family interest in quite a few rental properties.

But I only get my teeth cleaned once a year, so I guess we're even.
