I trying to learn how to build and cut rings so I can practice duplicating some for myself just in case I'm required to do some joint work in the future. Can anyone give a step by step process to build rings? Thanks.

Interesting thread...

I am just about to start building some rings myself, so I would be very interested in any tips or advice on building rings as well. I think I have a fairly good concept, but there are plenty of specifics that I haven't tried out yet.

For example, since I haven't cut any ring billets yet, I am wondering if most everyone cuts the slots with end mills versus a 3 wing slot cutter type of bit and if that is the case, is it just for a cleaner more accurate cuts? I am working with a hightower deluxe lathe with a pc router which I could use either a slot cutter bit or use end mill bits (with an adapter).

Also where is a good place to find a parting saw like the one that KJ used to sell? I contacted him and he doesn't have the little mini saws to cut off rings any longer... where else can I find something like this?

Gyros Precision Tools makes some nice micro saw blades for Dremel/Proxon type tools. If you don't want to order online, you can special order them through any Ace Hardware.

I have a dremel and router, both with brackets. I will assume the router will be the most accurate way to cut the grooves and cut the rings off correct? Easiest way to cut and prep the work that goes into the grooves?

Can we see a picture of that router and dremel bracket ?

The dremel bracket was just shipped to me. The router bracket is a 1 piece L bracket that mounts to the top slide. I can mount the router either horizontal or vertical. Ill post a pic later of it when I get home.

router and lathe setup

I have cuesmith deluxe and the bracket that I have will allow the porter cable router to mount either vertical or horizontal. I also believe that the router will be more accurate for cutting the slots, but will a 3 wing slot cutter work well or do end mills work much better for this? Also like grimm asked, what is the best way to cut or trim up the material your are inlaying into the rings and how deep of inlay is recommended? Any tips from people that have been there and done that with the ring building?

Thanks,

dakota

This photo shows the router setup, but in this picture I was just turning the butt stock taking it down in size.

Hi,

KJs saw and 1/4" arbors are great and do my ring work cut offs. I use a 3 wing carbide for the slots with a 5 c collet indexer.

Thanx Brent for providing the link for the saws.
This seller offers the saws for a price that's close to what I was offering them for.

One thing you need to be mindful of is the size of the saws.
When the od changes, so does the id. I cut the mandrel's arbor for an 8mm id.
That means that this seller's 30mm od saws will fit. Only 30mm od will fit.
There is an added plus to this seller in that they offer the saws in various thickness.
The orig. saws I offered were .9mm(.036") thick.
I'm currently running one of this seller's saws that is .5mm(.020") thick.
I've been using it close to a yr or so now with no regrets. I just bought 3 more, same thickness.

Unfortunately, my source for quality mandrels has expired. While there are other mandrels available on eBay, there is only one that I feel is suitable for this application. Once the mandrel is purchased, it requires machining.
The mandrel has been heat-treated and is very hard. Machining this mandrel requires carbide tooling and a lathe that will support it.

I've laid the concept out there for anyone who wants to pursue it.
I can no longer offer them at what I feel is an affordable cost.
Doing this yourself can be affordable by eliminating the middle-man...ME.
Have at it.

did you notice the increase?
3 months ago, it was all free shipping
the last time i got a few, she didnt even give me a combined ship rate

I bought the 7 piece milling bits from Unique.
I use KJ's saw and you can cut veneer rings paper thin with it.
I see you have Todd's adjustable router mount, good stuff.

I also use the KJ setup for cutting rings, it works very good.

I beleive that the router mount in the picture is the Cue Man (Hightower) mount. The mount from Todd has a couple more features on it that makes it a very good mount for the Porter Cable router.
