Inspirational Quotes/Saying

Hi everyone -

One thing I like to do is give inspirational cards or notes to my friends and family. I don't even have to have a reason...sometimes I just feel like letting them know I am thinking of them...sometimes I just feel like spreading some wisdom (even though it isn't mine).

So I thought I would post one of my favorites....and ask you all to post one of your favorites, too. Any quote or saying that makes you feel good, or reflect on life, or makes you think.

It may be cheesy...but my thought is that we can all share and maybe help inspire one another!

Here's a few of mine...

to enjoy the flavor of life, take big bites - Robert Heinlein

be the change you wish to see in the world - Gandhi

Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you've imagined. - Thoreau

to the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world - unknown

D'oh! - Homer Simpson

Looking forward to hearing some of yours! - Melissa

Ok, first off I love stuff like this! Are you sure you aren't like an undercover social worker??? Sometimes the things you ask us to do are the same things they made us do in college in the various soc/psych classes. (Yes kiddies, sometime education can be fun!)

Well, one of the first things that popped in my head when I first read this post is a quote from one of THE Jimmy Buffett's songs. But I don't think the quote can stand alone on it's own...it is on the start up page of my phone (because I'm a dork), but I know the whole song and get the whole meaning. So, I'm gonna post the whole song, the quote I'm thinking of is in bold, but the whole song says it all. I'm not sure if it will be insirational to everyone, but it is to me. IMO, it puts life as a whole into perspective. The little things we may think are so important today, may not be so tomorrow. You have to let life happen. Those who have no experiences, the good and the bad, have NOT lived. Oh, did I mention that I'm a dork??

Well here we are, your gonna need a large card for this one, LOL!

HE WENT TO PARIS BY JIMMY BUFFETT

He went to Paris looking for answers
To questions that bothered him so
He was impressive, young and aggressive
Saving the world on his own.
But the warm Summer breezes
The French wines and cheeses
Put his ambition at bay
And Summers and Winters
Scattered like splinters
And four or five years slipped away.

Then he went to England, played the piano
And married an actress named Kim
They had a good life, she was a good wife
Bore him a young son named Jim.
And all of the answers and all of the questions
He locked in his attic one day
'Cause he liked the quiet clean country living
And twenty more years slipped away.

Well the war took his baby, the bombs killed his lady
And left him with only on eye
His body was battered, his world was shattered
And all he could do was just cry.
While the tears were falling, he was recalling
The answers he never found
So he hopped on a freighter, skidded the ocean
And left England without a sound.

Now he lives in the islands, fishes the pilin's
And drinks his green label each day
He's writing his memoirs and losing his hearing
But he don't care what most people say.
Through eighty-six years of perpetual motion
If he likes you he'll smile then he'll say
Jimmy, some of it's magic, some of it's tragic
But I had a good life all the way
.

And he went to Paris looking for answers
To questions that bother him so.

Sorry I wrote a whole book, but I did refrain from posting like 3 other songs. I should get mad props for that!!!

Don P. Quote

This is my personal belief. It explains a lot about other people.

" Everybody is exactly where they are suppose to be, learning exactly what they are suppose to be learning, exactly when they are suppose to be learning it."

" Don't regret anything that has happened to you, it is what it took to get you where you are today."
Purdman

Don -

Are those quotes from "Illusions" by Richard Bach? They look very familiar, but it's been years since I've read the book and can't remember if they were in there.

jaz, I didn't read it anywhere. Back in the early 70's I was rather wild. Living in a school bus and making ungodly sums of money. I was giving money, clothes, and food to anybody I knew had a need. I saw greed, dishonesty, and folks that kept getting it all wrong. I also watched em suffer the consequences of their actions. It's called Karma, reaping what you sow. The world is knowledge knot city. It is the only way I could explain what was happening. I have been searching for the truth since I was a kid. I certainly don't know it all but I think I got a handle on it. SOOoooo, treat all your brothers and sisters like you would like to be treated, with love, dignity, and respect. Help those that you can. You don't have to go looking for them, just open your eyes. This might explain why I don't like to gamble. I don't want anybody elses money and I don't want to lose money that I might have otherwise been able to help some one with.
That's my story and I am sticking with it!!!!!

Fairy tales can come true, it can happen to you, if you're young at heart -- Frank Sinatra

-gasp- I'm always late to topics! ALWAYS!!

I love this kinda stuff..though I must say I just come up with most of it myself... afew I did write were...

If at first you don't succeed, don't try skydiving.-- I dunno

If at first you don't succeed, destroy all evidence you ever tried.--no idea

Hehe. Okay for real now, though.

I always say Does love reach you in that world you're living in? If not, then I'm sending it your way. , when I send a letter or a card.

Keep a smile with you at all times, even if you have to draw it on with an ink pen.

And one, also from a Jimmy Buffet & Martina McBride song.
I'll make a resolution that i'll never make another one. Just enjoy this ride on my trip around the sun.

Okay, mine aren't Inspirational...oopsy?
These are me:
Life is like an abstract painting...a little cluttered, but pretty to look at, until you start to analyze it's details, and pick apart it's symbolism..then it's no longer art, it's annoying!!

I wrote this to a friend that lives far away:
Your smile i will never forget, nor that look in your eyes
and those many times we shared insanely joyful cries.
Though your hand is no longer here for me to hold, I keep you closely embedded deep within my soul.
So now with every single smile I show,
I slowly help myself to let go.
Of all the sadness you're leaving once toke over me
and let the memories of you become part of me, and make me happy.

"Be who you are and do what you please because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind." -Dr. Suess

I love that one :)

The average man seeks agreement in the eye of the beholder and calls that self confidence. The Warrior sees impeccability in his own eye and calls that humbleness. Castanada.

My favorites...

I've been saving some of my favorite quotes for a while and attempting to write some of my own. My feeling is that reading someones favorite quotes is a good way to learn a lot about someone...

Here are mine:

--William Jennings Bryan

The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who have not got it.

--Abraham Lincoln

"All generalizations are dangerous, even this one."

And some that I have written and one that I have modified...
-------------------------------------------------------------
The short end of the stick that you perceive should not be measured against the success or misgivings of others…

But rather, measure your misfortune based on the rules that you would objectively apply to everyone in your situation…

If you were in authority and the ruler-maker…
--------------------------------------------------------------
Talk openly with everyone—if you dare…

Trust everyone with your thoughts, until your thoughts betray you…

The wise share their thoughts—and share no thoughts that cannot be shared…
--------------------------------------------------------------
Thinking-out-of-the-Box will not be fruitful until you first consider the saying;

"There is nothing new under the sun", and how this applies to your particular area of interest.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Great minds discuss ideas.

Average minds discuss events.

Simple minds discuss other people.

Corrupt minds put down other people.

your life consists of 10% what happens to you and 90% your attitude. ;)

I'm back again! :D I just could not stay away from this thread, LOL. Unfortunately I have another song to post, and it is truly inspirational. Again, it could just not be told with a single phrase. If you don't know it you are in for a real treat. If you do...then you are as cool as I, LOL! :p

It is by Mr. Kenny Rogers....and no it is not "The Gambler".

The Greatest

Little boy in a baseball hat stands in the field with his ball and bat
Says, "I am the greatest player of them all"
Puts his bat in his shoulder and he tosses up his ball.
And the ball goes up and the ball comes down,
Swings his bat all the way around
The world so still you can hear the sound, the baseball falls to the ground.
Now the little boy doesn't say a word, picks up his ball he is undeterred.
Says, "I am the greatest that there has ever been"
And he grits his teeth and he tries again.
And the ball goes up and the ball comes down,
Swings his bat all the way around
The world so still you can hear the sound, the baseball falls to the ground.
He makes no excuses he shows no fear
He just closes his eyes and listens to the cheers.
Little boy he adjusts his hat, picks up his ball, stares at his bat
Says "I am the greatest when the game is on the line"
And he gives his all one last time.
And the ball goes up and the moon so bright
Swings his bat with all his might
The world's as still as still can be, the baseball falls
And that's strike three.

Now it's suppertime and his momma calls,
little boy starts home with his bat and ball.
Says, "I am the greatest, that is a fact,
But even I didn't know I could pitch like that!"
Says, "I am the greatest, that is understood,
But even I didn't know I could pitch that good!"

Here's a few of my fav's

"Do what you feel in your heart to be right-for you'll be criticized anyway. You'll be dammed if you do, damned if you dont"

I always try to apply this next one to my opponants game after I have lost

"Be careful that victories do not carry the seeds of future defeats"

"Use what talents you possess the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang the best"

There are just waaay too many I really like to begin with :)

Maybe one of my favs is a little more pessimistic:

"Attitudes are contagious! Mine might kill you."

My favorite though,

"For some people, Pool is Life or Death....I regret to inform them that it is much more important than that" :D

These are from memory, and maybe not so inspirational, so forgive me if I mess them up a bit ...

"The difference between theory and practice is much larger in practice than it is in theory."

"This game is 90% mental, and the other 10% is in your head"

the one and only Yogi

"When the going gets wierd, the wierd turn pro."

Hunter S. Thompson, may he RIP or however he may choose

> Here are some that are generally attributes to sports in general, and pool (perhaps) in particular.

"You are, what you do, when it counts" -The Masao

"Anyone can grab a tiger by the balls, but it takes a hero to keep squeezing."

The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender.
- Vince Lombardi

Rocco Mediate (Pro Golfer),talking about Tiger Woods - "He's not human. Cut him open, and I'll tell you what you'll find: a bunch of wires and levers, and a big-assed heart."

My personal favorite,is a quote from the legendary Steve Prefontaine. For those of you who may not be familiar with him, back in the early 70's,he held EVERY American distance running record between 1000-10000 meters, not because he was the fastest man in America, but because he had a superhuman cardiovascular system, allowing him to run at top speed longer than virtually anyone on Earth. His coach,Bill Bowerman, created the jogging craze singlehandedly, and was co-founder of Nike. Here is the quote,my signature line at the moment. Tommy D

Hey Melissa, this is a good thread. Most of the best quotes I've heard are from Albert Einstein. Here are a few from him:

A man should look for what is, and not for what he thinks should be.

A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.

Any fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius-and a lot of courage-to move in the opposite direction.

Anyone who doesn't take truth seriously in small matters cannot be trusted in large ones either.

Before God we are all equally wise - and equally foolish.

Strive not to be of great success, strive to be of great value.
