Installing a Pin

I like the radial pins but I'm having a problem installing one. Does anyone have a good step by step guild to installing different pins? I looked for a radial tap but I have had no luck. So I'm wondering do I just use the pin to thread the shaft? Sorry for the basic questions but I'm just getting into building cues, I just bought a lathe I hope its here next friday so I can get started.
 
Hmmmm no you can't thread the shaft with the pin.

Use the search function you will find a couple good threads and if you still have questions call me and ill help and atlas has the taps and pins.

Call Eric at Atlas, they have blueprint and a step by step procedure for drill tap and bore ,he call fax to you, I think.

Why not start out with something that is readily available???

Buy some brass inserts for a 5/16-18 pin. Or just use a phenolic insert in the shaft and tap that for 5/16-18??? You would need a 5/16-18 tap for the pin and a 7/16-14 tap or a 7/16-20 tap for the brass insert

Inserts are 3 or 4 dollars and the taps are available cheap local or ebay.

I would be about 5 to 10% of the cost of a radial pin and the tap that is required....... and you would get the same learning experience from the installation.

5/16-18 pins work just fine.

Point well made on starting with a thread that is more
common and much less expensive. If you insist on buying
1 radial pin to 3 other than here is my variation.

I use a .312 endmill and that eliminates the need to bore, which in turn makes it simpler and far less chance of making the hole oversize. If Im using the .308 flat minor pins, I bore the barrel hole with a 3/8 endmill. Perfect every time.

Atlas or Prather sell the taps.
Other than using the Uni Loc site, I would recommend Chris Hightowers book and at the very least, the first DVD in his series of building dvds.

They will clear up any of the questions you may have.

You will eventually need taps for the 5/16 x 18 and 14, and the inserts. Like Kim mentioned, you can buy a lots of those pins and inserts for much cheaper than the Radial pins. Get some maple or poplar dowels and have at it.

Interesting, so the end mills don’t walk in an un bored hole. I’m happy with my results but my green beer would stay colder with yours. Time for some experimenting.
 
I always used 2 taps. The second tap I ground flat to get rid of the taper end.

The lathes are always in stock ready to ship. They tell you 3 - 4 weeks to give you some time to save some money for the endless addiction.

I bet lunch in a year you will have 25 bottles of every cure all finish sitting under lathe.

Oh, always promise to have the Custom Cue ready by a certain date before you even start on it.
