Came up during in recent tournament. A player shot a ball and assumed it is going to sink (instead ball was hanging in the pocket) and started aiming for the next ball.

In such case should referee interfere and tell player not to shoot next ball?

The ref is not there to give advice. He is there to call fouls. If no foul has happened, then the ref should keep quiet.

If the shooter commits a foul then the ref should pipe up.

Was the ref asked to work that particular match? Were they just "standing around"? If they were not part of the match then they should not interfere.

This happened to me in the semi's at SBE two years ago. My opponent fouled and refused to acknowledge it. A ref was standing near by and saw the foul occur. After the match, the ref said he could not interfere as I did not asked for him.

No. If the player shoots it's a foul and the incoming player has ball in hand. The ref, by offering advice, would be coaching, not refereeing. If the opponent were to offer the advice in a sportsmanlike manner, then that's another story.

I have done this more than once. I appreciate it when my opponent sees my mistake, gives me a 'heads up' before I drop and proceed to foul. I do the same for most. To me, it's the respectful, gentleman thing to do.

Maybe I am too honest, I don't know. I appreciate the 'nod' from opponents when I call fouls on myself. Being respectful and honest were some things I learned early on the Golf Course when I started playing 50 years ago. Wish more pool players had a golfer attitude.

Jelly Rolls,

-Kat,

I agree with your post 100%, except that a lot of recreational golfers will cheat if no one is looking

Yes referee was officiating this game and he did ask player not to continue which I think was wrong.
That is problem with pool today
When ref are needed for their expertise, they are nowhere to be seen or employed like in many tourneys but when their expertise is not required, they behave like busybodies and give it unsolicited

LOL 100% true
Also when big money or an arm or leg is involved, everything goes out the window. Which is why in big rich pro sports, tonnes of money spent in referreeing, monitoring systems
If humans are all so honest, why do we need laws

Is this implying that the opponent NOT saying anything is BAD sportsmanship?

Of course not. In league play I would ALWAYS tell my opponent he was down on the wrong ball, etc. However in a huge tournament I would probably not be so forgiving.

ref should have kept his mouth shut. not his business unless asked. it's coaching on his part. you don't need friends like that :)

Yes. If you need to win that way, you need to work on your game more.

There's another way of looking at it....
...if you need to be helped by your opponent to win...there is no honor in the win.

If you can't handle "NO QUARTER ASKED FOR OR GIVEN".....
...maybe you need to learn how to compete.

I agree with you completly. Skippy 27 should know that player about to commit the foul, needs to work on their game and focus.

I am a certified ref. Yep this is correct.

I'm a bit confused. Did the ball drop before he shot the next ball? If it did, then what's the problem. Also who shoots that quick.
