International Challenge Of Champions
Winner-Take-All For $50,000 August 8-9, 2007

Billiards champions from around the world will go head-to-head in the Seventeenth Annual INTERNATIONAL CHALLENGE OF CHAMPIONS. The winner-take-all $50,000 event will be held Wednesday, August 8th and Thursday 9th at the Mohegan Sun Casino, Uncasville, CT.

The Challenge of Champions is widely considered the toughest tournament to win in professional billiards. Once each year eight international champions are brought together in a sudden-death shootout with a pressure-cooker format of winner-take-all for $50,000 and the winner claims one of the most coveted titles in pool - Champion of Champions.

The 2007 field includes Johnny Archer, 2006 winner of the INTERNATIONAL CHALLENGE OF CHAMPIONS, Ronnie Alcano, current World Champion from the Philippines, Lee Van Corteza, Philippine National Pool Champion and five other champions from around the world.

Mohegan Sun Casino, the host site, will make the 2007 event ADMISSION FREE to pool fans from around the USA and the world. The event drew such large crowds last year at Mohegan Sun that it was standing-room-only attendance. There will be four playing sessions in the two-day international tournament. On Wednesday, August 8th, the quarterfinal rounds will be played at 4 PM and 7 PM, with two matches in each session. On Thursday, August 9th, the two semifinals will be played at 4 PM and the final Championship match will be played at 7 PM. The semifinals and the final match will be taped for airing on ESPN.

The INTERNATIONAL CHALLENGE OF CHAMPIONS is regarded as the supreme test of skill in professional billiards. The eight players are so evenly matched that any one player could beat the other seven on a given day. In addition, the tournament format is the most demanding test of 9-Ball skill in the sport. The matches are two sets, race to five games each set, with a 1-game sudden death tie-breaker in the event of tied sets. The 9-ball does not count on the break, and to win a game, the 9-ball is call shot. The caliber of competition is so intense that a single mistake invariably eliminates a player from any chance at the winner-take-all purse of $50,000.

In the 2006 Championship match, Johnny Archer and Thorsten Hohmann played a 1-game sudden death for $50,000 and the Champion of Champions title.

The 2007 tournament will be the Seventeenth Annual event, and has been televised on ESPN in each of the last Seventeen years. Those attending should arrive early for each tournament session. Make plans today to attend the 2007 INTERNATIONAL CHALLENGE OF CHAMPIONS. For information call the Mohegan Sun toll free at 1-888-226-7711, Ext. 7163.

I like Feijin over Schmidt and Souquet over Van Corteza.

Alcano vs. Hohmann will be a tough matchup and I'd LOVE to see it. Both are extremely tough competitors and this one is a bit too close to call. Based on the way he has been playing in the last 6 months, I'd give an ever so slight edge to Alcano.

And in the last match, my pick would be Yang over Archer. I know Johnny has been playing well in the last year and is the current Champion of Champions, but Yang could be one of the best players in the world right now. His methodical, precise game seems like it could hold up against Archer. Still though, too close to call.

I like Yang as the overall winner. If not, perhaps Alcano.

thanks for the reminder, this is always my favorite tournament of the year!

hows come SJM isnt our man on site with updates and info?

I think that's no question. I would say he is the best 9ball player in the world right now. I too think Yang will go all the way in this.

I asked this in another thread, but has Yang ever played in America before? I hope he stays a while and hustles in some local tournaments. :p

Hopefully, this trip will encourage him and the other Taiwanese to participate in the US Open.

I'll take everyone on the right side of the "vs."...Schmidt, Souquet, Hohmann, & Yang.

Where's the vBookie event at?

Don't quote me on it but with Orcullo being in NY right now, there has been talk of an Orcullo vs. Yang rematch while Yang is in the states.

At least, that's what I've heard through the grapevine.

I heard it too (Yang vs. Orcullo). But it is now very doubtfull it will take place. Yang is supposed to go home for family business. It would have been a treat for pool fans here to see them two play in person.

That's just great.

I had decided to stake John in this tournament and now he doesn't need the money. Ain't that nice? Oh, well. :(

Neils won, huh. D@mn, when Tanner piped in I knew I was sunk. Judging by his vCash total...I'll probably go 0-4 this round.

Any updates guys? Funny, this event is being held right here in the US and
we can't even get to see on online chat what's happening. While on the other
side of the globe we have the Guinness Tour were we can watch with all our
heart's content the action in real time! This is soooo sad...

I asked this in another thread, but has Yang ever played in America before?

At the 2003 Big Apple Nine Ball Challenge held at Master Billiards in Queens, NY, Yang and Reyes played one of the best nine ball matches I've ever seen. Yang's play was, more or less, perfect in running out to a 6-0 lead, but Efren dug down deep and rallied for a truly memorable 9-8 victory. At the time, all I knew of Yang was that he finished 3rd at the 2002 WPC in Cardiff, Wales. I'm pretty sure that Yang was in town for the 2002 International Challenge of Champions.
