Is $1,000 Enough?

Blackie,u changed ur pic - WTF lol? Seriously though " Custom " is VERY subjective now days - and with current definitions o doubt u can get both for that price. I am with the others though, don't worry so much about getting a matched set. Spend a couple honeies on a decent J/B and spend the rest and be mostly worried about your player.

It can be done......I got a matching set from a maker here on the forum, but there is no way I'd part with them.

I'm assuming that you're not looking for anything ornate then. A PJ or merry widow pair could be had for 1K by some cuemakers.

My first try would be Ryan Theewen of RAT Cues/Meullers. His cues are well made and very reasonably priced. And he's an active AzB member.

How about you just buy whatever you want with whatever you want to spend. Dont seek approval from the mob.

As I've said in a couple of previous threads I'm looking to upgrade my cues & go custom, I have picked the cue maker & what I want done design wise but what I would like opinions on is wether or not $1,000 is an acceptable amount to have a matching pair of cues made? (One player & one break).

My opinion is no.

Here's what i'd do: buy a $80 J&J jump/break. They work great. Spend the other $920 on the cue. Seriously, high-dollar j/b's are a waste of $$$$$. My J&J breaks(&jumps) every bit as good as the Gilbert i sold.

I've had several different J&J jump and jump/break cues. They all performed a little differently. Some were fantastic, others not so much.

I would say the ones which are a one piece ferrule/tip combo (like a sledgehammer) tended to pack more punch overall.

I say 743 is enough

I have always figured you for a cheap SOB.
Yer likely the guy who goes to the wash room when the last game is just about over
and slip out the door so you don't have to split table time.

Myself, I would go at least $745.78

I agree with the Czar. I have always been amazed at what people will spend on a Pred break cue and others. I have tried many, and they don't break any better than a piece of Bar Wood off the rack. Just pick the proper weight and a half decent tip.

Spend the Savings on upgrading your one Custom Player. You can always save up for a Matching break cue at a later date.

Have one great player, instead of 2 half assed. I used a 25 dollar Eliminator EBay Cue, (Sneaky), for my breaker. I didn't hurt for it.

But that is just me.

Quit now and save the $1000
play off the wall
stick to one pocket and you will not need a jump break cue

If you're looking for a playing cue I would buy one that's already been made rather than order one.

If you buy one that's already been made you'll be able to hit with it and know exactly how it feels and whether you like it.

If you order one you don't know what it's going to feel like when you finally get it, and you won't know whether you like it or not as a playing cue until you finally get it.

Then, if you don't like it you'll probably sell it to get one you do like, or at least still have to buy another one to play with.

I agree with him. I used a Nick varner jump break. It works perfectly fine

I seldom use my McD. Stinger b/j cue but others borrow mine all the time.

It's because of my bum right shoulder that I can't elevate to jump the ball.

In my opinion,, being able to jump the cue ball is a truly wonderful weapon to have.

Anyway, I do break with the cue and despite that others say it breaks great, I dunno.

Personally, I've tried other break sticks as well and I think a house cue works every bit as good.

Amen to that.

As I told my wife, buying a custom cue is much like buying an engagement ring- always spend at least three months salary to show the love. More on the second and third go around.

For a max of $250 you can get a player and breaker from Schmelke. They'll be Sneaky Petes but they'll be full splice sneakys that'll last and play with any customs out there.First, just order yourself a player and see if I'm right,if you can't afford to try that for about $120 including shipping then I've wasted my time and yours !!!

I agree with you bro PoolBum, 100% agree and this is what i recommend also for the cue, if you have the chance to try it then it is really a bonus, you can grip the handle to see whether the handle diameter suits your taste and also you can roll the cues to check whether it is straight or not

as for the break cue, i recommend mezz break cue, they are very durable and can last for very long time (i have used mine for 4 years+ now)
