Is it better to post up money in a match, or play out of your pocket?

When you are playing someone for money, would you rather play by posting the money up or play from your wallet/pocket? And why? Thank you for your input.

In my eyes, the answer is pretty obvious.

When playing with a stranger, post the money. When playing with someone you know to be respectable when it comes to money, it doesn't really matter. My personal preferance would still be posting the money.

always post up

I always demand to post up or I dont play. If they give me any grief I just walk away and gerneraly they just post up and play. only a few times has a guy walked. One guy, I know for sure, was betting on air.

Depends on the amount... 100 and under you can come out of your pocket... Over that post it... No reason to be a jerk for cheap and if you get an air barrel for the last game/set you learned not to play em again or that you won't have to adjust if you do...... "You beat me last time I need some weight"... "You stiffed me the last game/set... we play the same way if we play at all".....

Post Toasties

I always want to post, I almost never want to play one set, so if I lose I pay out of my pocket with the money on the light posted for the next set. If my opponent loses and wants to play another set we leave the money on the light for the next set and settle up

On the rare occasions that the money was not posted I always want to pay off after the set.

If we adjust, then we must settle up. If my opponent does not want to settle up when we adjust it raises more than questions.

I am a person of my word; when dealing with others that have shown they stand behind their word I do not insist on posting but I always want to pay or be paid after the set. I have never quit winner, but that does not mean I am always willing to adjust.

I used to have a couple of guys I played real regular with, and it was cheap so we never posted. Played at lease once per week. It was always a friendly game and there was never a question of getting aired. We all had jobs and cash.
If I'm playing someone I don't know I always post.. cheap sets or not it doesn't matter. Keeps all the BS out of it. If he isn't willing to post, we aren't playing. I am kind of a nit when it comes to me paying when I lose and him not paying.

Play by the game, pay by the game..., cheap sets no sweat.., anything above two bills you post or no deal!

Friends or strangers...........

When I play with players that I know well I never posted up.

Strangers are different. In fact if it's a large amount the money needs to be put where nobody can steal it.

I know of about 20 matches where the money disappeared. Flat out just taking it and running or robbed at gunpoint or just flat out gone.

Some players you know just don't have the money and you need to post up all the time for any amount. Most of us know these guys where we live.

I had a few players over the years that we just paid each other by check. These were players I played alot.

Years back you just expected it to happen. If you were playing and beat a guy out of 3 or 4 sets, let's say we were playing for $500 a set you almost expected to get air barreled on the last set.

Of course this only happened if you did post up.

I played a well known player about 2 years ago at Valley Forge. I beat him out of about 1500.

He came to my home town and played me and beat me back out of about 900 for 300 a set.

When we played at valley forge he stiffed me out of about 300 so the last set we played in my home town i brought up the 300 from valley forge. He said he didn't remember. Plus he had a backer that came with him to my home town.

I flat out told him that I didn't care if he didn't remember, I did. His backer got a little huffy but I just told him to work it out with his horse. I told him I would feel like a fool if I paid the last set. All we're doing is getting square.

The player did finally remember because he quit trying to deny it real soon.

What's right is right.

Now maybe I shouldn't have played him because he owed me the money but i thought I would win again for the 4th time in 3 years. But if I did lose I had the $300 credit. That's why i played for $300.

Next time we play we will post up and there will be a next time.

It all works out.

if you like getting paid when you win you better get used to posting it. times aint' getting any easier and the people aren't getting any less desperate.

if you're playing for 20 a set there's nothing wrong with not posting it. just make sure you pay after every set/game or however you're playing

This is a little like poker, you had better learn how to read em. Some you actually want to owe the last set, it might keep them coming back for more. That again depends on the amount and who it is.
on the other hand, wen you do post, it keeps some out of trouble, but also keeps them from 'going off"!
if i know em and we play cheap sets and "air" one, i don't sweat it too much. he will be back! Most of the money bet on pool these days aint really worth worrying too much about anyhow>

A lot of variables involved IMO.

How well do you know the guy you're playing?
How well does everyone else in the room know the guy your playing?
Has he air barreled anyone before?
How much are you playing for?

I like my money in my pocket, not up on the light where anybody can steal it. And even if he does post, it could still be his last 20 bucks. One trip to the bathroom or a cigarette break, and then what? If I didnt trust you to pay me, why would I trust you not to steal from me? If I think the guy might stiff me for any reason, I dont play.

Very good input.
