Is "Running The Rack" the Kid Delicious book any good?

After reading the whole book I'd give it a B in pool books. It would make a good movie with the right stars in it and some fiction added. Johnnyt

I got it and finished this week.

I enjoyed it alot. I thought more character development would have been nice and in the middle of a story the writer went off on small tangents.

Overall I thought it was good and like it was said above that it could be a good movie.

I rate it slightly below Playing off the Rail but its something that every pool player should go out and buy a copy off.

We need to support all the positive aspects of pool. Its not a bad book at all.

When I bought mine I didnt find it so I asked for help. I was in a Barnes and Noble. When I asked the guy KNEW where the book was and asked about it. Evidently a few people have been buying it at that location and he has noticed having to restock it.

I work ikn publishing so I read this book back in June (advanced copy from a friend at Houghton Mifflin).

While L. Jon Wertheim is n't the greatest writer in the world, he does a decent job. And the story is entertaining to those who follow pool. You'll recognize a lot of names and places. And for some people, those names and places will be of people that you know, have met, or may have even matched up with! And that's kinda cool.

Its a good story. And what makes it even better is that its largely a true story! While its NOT going to win any awards, its a fun and interesting read. And the movie (allegedly in pre-production) has potential if its cast right.

I'm suprised someone hasnt found the link yet, but there was a thread on this book 2 maybe 3 days ago....
If it is as good as everyone says, i guess I will have to read it

I liked the book, very easy reading, a good insite to the Kid's personal ups and downs, hope he is doing ok now, I have not heard of him lately, anyone know if he is still playing.

IMO, it's not a great book, but it's a good book and well worth the read. The movie has potential, but, as others have said, there needs to be more character development, plot development, and some fiction to make it more interesting.
:p

Maybe he didn't find that because it's called "Running the Table" not "Running the Rack":p

I read the first chapter last night before I fell asleep, not that it was boring, but I was tired.
I will say that so far that I think the author could be using more fiction, but that is just my opinion. That being said I think it has the potential of being an excellent read.
I will reserve further comment until I complete the book.

Thanks to all for your comments. I am an actor in NYC and just recently finished work on a movie that is not about pool but has a lot of pool in it. I sent a copy of the book to the director. I heard Danny on the radio and it sounded interesting. Anyway thanks.

Thanks for sending a copy of Danny's book to your director. The one thing that would give pool a five year shot in the arm is a good pool movie. Hopefully they can look at what has been done since Color of Money and get name actors and actesses in the main characters.

Good luck to you and I hope your movie becomes a BLOCKBUSTER. Johnnyt

Pool makes it to NPR!

I was amazed to find a story on the home page of NPR.com, National Public Radio's web site while looking for something else. There was a decent review of the book and a posting of the first chapter.

Twice in 9 months, pool makes an appearance on NPR? In February, there was a story about Efren Reyes (you can search for it on the site) and now Kid Delicious. What's next, Time Magazine?

Sorry, I just noticed this was posted in another thread. My bad!

Brian in Va - yes I listen to NPR :D

Clarification please...is the book title "running the rack" OR "running the table"??? I've seen posts saying both...

Danny said Jack Black is supposed to play him. He better start hittin some smorgasbords!

Running the Table.

I am more than 1/2 way thru it. I think it is a good read & fairly accurate.

There is an entire chapter on Danny & one of my best friends, Andy Quinn, playing over the course of two days. The story line is very close. Andy gave him the 7 & also spotted him games on the wire. Andy won the first day. Second day they switched pool rooms & Andy lost it all back. In another post, I told the story of Andy giving lil Alex also the 7 and losing. JCIN, of the ActionReport, let me know that Andy was stupid for doing so and he had never even heard of Andy Quinn anyways. Duh. Well, seems that here is more written proof that 5 years ago it took a great player to beat Andy & the spot wouldn't have made much of a difference. Someone buy JCIN the book so he can read what action is about.

Since the book is candid about it, I will say that I have no idea how Delicious can play pool while he smokes pot. I was in with Gabe @the DCC a few years ago & Delicious went out side every 22 minutes to smoke a joint. I wasn't really impressed with Delicious pool game that day but was impressed that he could even see the balls with his eyes so red.
