jameswalden...What are you expecting, in compensation, as a "house pro", and what do you bring to the table, for the poolroom owner?

No need to. It was a serious question, that any poolroom owner will ask. I'm not a poolroom owner, but I have had the 'house pro' job. Just wondered what James's thoughts were.

If you want to know his thoughts you should call him. He is someone who really has a lot to teach and he gives lessons too, you should check him out.

I think just having you at the room would sure add to the great pool atmosphere.

Many great players had their own rooms and allowed them to play allot helping them play better.

I had my own room for about 13 years from 1986 to 1999. Being a top player for those years really helped me attract many players and I understood well what the pool players wanted. I taught players for many years during this time and that also helped build the business.

I ran good tournaments and had a huge passion for the game then also. This is one huge item you will bring to the table at any poolroom that puts you to work.

Plus you know how to play for sure and I know that you have been giving some sreious lessons.

Any room that puts you to work will be getting a huge bargain.

This is the shot in the arm that many poolhalls need right now. Someone that can create some real interest in the game and give some serious help to the players that want to get better.

You have my recommendation for sure.

Word of advice though. Go to a poolroom that is no smoking.

Most of the people that worked for me when i had my room are dead.

Cancer. They were the ones that smoked and they were in the second hand smoke also. it was just too much.

Good luck..............

What does a house pro do? There never was one in any of the spots I have played, do they just give lessons?

I think it really depends on the room in question. When John Schmidt had his room in WV, He was the owner, the sandwich maker and was fast with a bottled water or diet soda plus he gave world class 14.1 lessons.

We have 3 pros at one of the local rooms here, two world champions and one world class player. Some tasks they have done are plunge toilets, give lessons, have conversations with guests and tell road stories, repair cues, hand out balls, tighten screws on wobbly chairs. It is after all a job.

Many things...........

What does a house pro do? There never was one in any of the spots I have played, do they just give lessons?

Organize leagues, teach players the finer points of the game, run tournaments, work the counter or tend bar if there is one, mop floors or stock supplies.

Plus just think how nice it would be to have Rodney, Morris or Mika or even Alex around the pool hall all the time to help players.

This guy is right up there. Just hasn't continually played professionally but has played at a professional level for a long time.

Knowing james a little he would do whatever it would take to contribute.

Yeah that is kinda what I thought they would do. Having pros like that at the local hall would be great but I would be the only one who knew they were hahahaha.

Over here in Xiamen, China the house pro gives lessons and plays with anyone who asks. The cost to play him is higher and you can gamble with him if you like. I have seen some of them performing managerial duties as well.

I personally think that a house pro done right brings a LOT to a pool room. Done wrong it's just another person sucking money out of the room. When my girlfriend and I were into bowling back in my 20s the house pro was invaluable in helping us to select equipment, learn the basics, and get on the right league team for our level.

I think that it would be really really cool as well for rooms to send their house pros to tournaments and for tournaments to pay bonuses to the rooms whose house pros win. I think that this creates two-way excitement and gets the locals behind the house pro to lend support to send him to the bigger events. Or possibly even cooler rooms have qualifier series where the prize is travel and expenses to play in big events alongside their house pro.

So many things are possible when a little imagination and elbow grease are applied.

FWIW James Walden helped a young teenager to learn the finer points of the game for the princely sum of betting $1 a game against the ghost. He allowed me to set up the balls any way I wanted with one cluster and he took ball in hand and tried to run them out. We did this for hours and I learned more in that time than all the books I had read up to then. I think James would be a great addition to any professional pool room.

And if anyone wants to become a SERIOUS player then hire him for yourself full time, put him up in your house and train like Bruce Lee for six months and if you don't make the money back 3x over inside of a year then you are obviously brain-dead and should seek a new hobby. :-)

Holy cow. I have family in Spring Tx and had no idea.
Is there action there?

Hey Dr9ball,
I just left James playing at the Worlds pool hall, Buffalo Billiards tonight. He and a few other pros are there a lot. How are you my friend? I trust that all is well for you and your family! Take care.
Many Regards,

Hello James,
Good luck on your quest. I hope everything works out for you just as you want it to!

Bring him to Shooters in Olathe.

IMHO Shooters is in DESPERATE need of someone who knows how to run the weekly pool tournaments.

I am not saying that Dan Tull isn't awesome at his job but he is hardly seen around the pool hall anymore. And really does not see what those he has left in charge are doing and how they are hurting his business. And the people running the weekly tourneys (to be real honest), are just not capable of doing things properly.

We had someone who ran things very well and did a great job, loved the game and the pool scene in general and did not mind after hours action.

Now days they (employees) can't wait to hit the doors when it's closing time. And in my honest opinion, this is BAD for Shooters. Shooters was known to be an action pool hall, and lately (last month or two) things have not been the same since Kelly has left.

Doug Patrick I believe is a great asset to Shooters, but he can't do everything, he does the tables and cue repair, and WOULD be great at running weekly tourneys, but he just does not have the time to run the tournaments and cue and table repair.

I am sure that James Walden could bring not only lots of knowledge, but maybe even give the place a jumpstart with fresh new ideas.

Shooters really needs a shot in the arm.

Don't get me wrong, I love the place and I travel 45 minutes at least twice a week to play at Shooters, even when there are at least 3 other pool halls closer. Shooters is awesome and the Midwest Nineball Tourneys are doing great, BUT we could use some fresh new scenery in the Kansas City area.

I am sure if anyone knows who I am they will probably give me flack for this post, but oh well.....

Maybe we could even get someone who knows how to rate player skills better, who does not succumb to politics and *****ing and change ratings on the whim just because a player has had a great match, or beat a player better than them in the tournaments once or twice.
