sjm,
The IPT episode a couple of years ago seemed to indicate that the better women players will jump ship at the prospect of big money. The board's acceptance of WPBA players competing in the IPT definitely weakens their appearance of authority; and calls into question their consistency. Rather than sticking to their policy during the IPT, they now proceed into an area where their motives will need to be questioned.

Why suspend Jasmine and not all of the women who competed in the IPT event that overlapped the Peoria WPBA tournament???

Would like to know who were the Board members that allowed members to play in the IPT - did any of these Board members play on the IPT or try out for it?? Who are the Board members who ruled that Jazz could not play in the 10 Ball tournament??

Maybe they got together and decided it would be easier to beat her on some kind of ruling(technicality) rather than try their chances on the table.... most of whom would be found wanting....

I won't suggest that I know all the facts in the case, but I think we can safely assume that Jasmin's request for a waiver to play in the WTBC was denied by the WPBA Board. Had it been granted, there would be no controversy here at all.

Whether the waiver should have been granted is, of course, a matter for debate, and certainly, the issue is far from cut and dried.

On the one hand, the exclusive rights that are spelled out in the WPBA player contracts are vital, as they enable the WPBA to raise more money from title and venue sponsors, who understand that it makes their product more special. This, of course, increases WPBA prize funds, which have grown steadily over the years.

On the other hand, it's obvious that credible performances by Jasmin, such as her strong finish at the World 14.1 Championships, against the elite men, enhance the image of and bring positive press to women's pool and the WPBA.

Let's cut to the chase. If Jasmin played in the WTBC when the waiver was denied by the WPBA Board, she was in knowing violation of WPBA rules, and some sort of penalty was called for. Whether she announced her intention to play in the WTBC to the WPBA organization despite the lack of a waiver is a mitigating, though not an excusing, factor. Whether the penalty dished out was appropriate is another matter for debate, and as I don't know how similar matters have been dealt with in the past, I'd rather not comment.

Finally, to those who see the WPBA as lacking vision, consider how tricky this matter really is. I'm sure this was a very difficult decision for the Board, as I'm sure they understand that Jasmin is one of their headliners. Ultimately, I hope that the WPBA bends when it comes to similar waivers requested by Jasmin in the future, but I leave the matter in their capable hands. The WPBA, through superior management and policies, has produced America's only long-lasting pro pool tour, and I have confidence they will, ultimately, do the right thing.

SJM, can I borrow your head?

I have a level that needs calibrating.

I am gonna send an email to WPBA and tell them that I hope they will continue with the PPV, but that I will not buy the PPV for this tournament since they have suspended Jasmin.

For being too pretty or good or both?

Just think how pretty she would be if she ever smiled? She always looks pissed off to me.

I have sent about the same thing to their fan feedback under their contact info on their site. Johnnyt

A few people on here said that this rule that Jasmin broke is only for the top players. So if you become a top player your reward is you can't play anywhere else but the WPBA unless you ask Mommy first Johnnyt

Assuming JO broke the rule and missed a WPBA event because the WPBA contract says she should attend all WPBA events... the punishment is to

Not play in TWO events? isn't this a bit confusing?

So she miss one event.. fine her. Don't punish the next two events... that is just plain idiotic IMO.

This makes too much sense Tom. I'm beginning to feel like some of the other posters on here. If they ban her from two tournaments, that's two events she cannot win and extra money for all of them who banned her. There is a conflict of interest here, and it is not Jasmin's.

I don't smile when I play, either. She does have a beautiful smile, though. Watch her interviews.

Imagine if everyone from AZ did this. As a group there is far more power. But then again, that might punish the other players (less money in, less money out)...

I've written them a letter as well. If it does nothing else, it lets them know that people are watching what they do and they may make future decisions based on that.

Reposting their contact info again:

EDIT: I got that contact info from the WPBA website believing it was their headquarters. I've just been informed it may be Melissa Herndon's address and phone number so please disregard that contact information! Use the feedback form instead:

Does anyone have an email address?

Food for thought ...

The Oregon stop that Jasmin missed .. I believe she was a defending champion and chose not to defend the title.

Jasmin has the look and potential but what has she accomplished in WPBA that deserve a comparison to Jean Balukas, Allison Fisher or Karen Corr?

To boycott WPBA PPV would only hurt the tour and TAR (who's chosen to do the PPV). There are plenty of other "pretty faces" in WPBA .. I'm watching Angel Paglia playing with Kristi Carter commentating. Now only if I can get the damn chat to work, I can profess my love for Kristi (don't care that neither Kristi or Jasmin play in my team).

It's hard for me to comment completely since this is the first time I've been on the board in a few weeks and just learned of this incident. I do agree with those saying the two event ban does seem a bit much, especially considering Jasmin already missed an event.

However, in terms of being punished, I think, as others have said, it depends on the details of what happened. I can certainly see both sides of the argument. On one side, you have a popular, extremely talented player who is missing out. But, at the same time, the WPBA, if they have these policies, need to enforce them. I liked the Annika analogy used earlier. If she had bailed on an LPGA event for a men's event or something else (not related to reasons for being, such as injury or another emergency), if the tour had policies, they should be enforced.

The WPBA only has a set number of events throughout the year. If top players were to miss events voluntarily, it's going to hurt the tour. As for the WPBA being puppet masters and controlling the players, I think that is a bit much. They are a business. They have to protect their own interests first, over those of any individual player. If it's the case where Jasmin asked for a waver, didn't receive one, and still missed the event, it was by no fault of the WPBA, in my opinion. I believe it would be something completely different if it was not the week of a WPBA event and they had issues with Jasmin playing elsewhere.

Again, that's just my opinion. Both sides certainly have valid points.
