Jeanette Lee locked down shot, is it BS?

A friend of mine told me @ a shot he'd seen Jeanette shoot, that made me scratch my head and cry BS! He'd seen it and said for this locked down shot, and having ball in hand, she put the Cue Ball ON TOP of the rail and proceeded to shoot.

I gotta think it was not a legit shot; that any ball on the rail is a foul. But he was thinking because the object ball was inaccessibly frozen like my one ball in my diagram (barring a jump), that some obscure rule prevailed and allowed this top of the rail shot.

Was he smoking somethin funny or what?

I guess it depends on your definition of the playing surface. If you are playing an idiot maybe they would fall for it.

Locked Down shot? Does that mean no way to hit the one? At any rate the c/b has to start on the table bed unless this was a trick shot. You can do anything if it is a trick shot.

I'm going to have my friend over for dinner. Thanks guys!

i don't know about j. lee but i was watching some recorded matches i had from the wpba tour championship and this was exactly the shot kim shaw laid out as way to get your opponent on three fouls. the premise was your opponent is on two already you have no way to make a shot on the one and no way to play safe again so you intentionally take a foul yourself putting a ball in front of the one (it already has balls on either side). by intentionally fouling your opponent now has ball in hand but still loses because they can't hit the one and will make the third foul no matter what. after kim executed this allison fisher walked into frame and did exactly this with the cue ball and eveyone laughed explaining that what allison did may have looked great but was not a leagal shot.

I don't know the rule but with her opponent on a foul I think she should have rolled the 9 into the jaws of the pocket and forced her opponent to break out the one, leaving a possible easy combination for the win.

Locked down shot - BS?

The shot you have diagrammed was the subject of a Kim Shaw "CueTec tiip of the day" segment. This one was from the last WPBA tourney at the Hard Rock in (mumble), Florida.

She set up the tableau in support of a strategy to three-foul your opponent, minus the cue ball on the rail.

Having locked down/up the one ball, she confidently asserted her opponent would have no reply.

From off camera, Allison enters, picks up the cue ball from the table bed, places it on the rail, and shoots it into the one ball, and exits.

It was funny. Both players acted their parts well.

If Jeannette has also done this, the bit may be exhibition stock-in-trade.

I'd be willing to bet this is what he saw. Thanks!

Sidenote question: regarding a ball barely in the kitchen, on the headstring

Is a ball in the kitchen when it barely overlaps the head string, or must the bottom of that ball at least be touching the headstring?

I think that a person who is good with a jump cue could escape this by jumping from between the balls and hitting the top front of the one ball. Not saying it is easy but it is possible.

Actual match: Vilmos Foldes assembles "cage" when opponent's on 2 fouls

Matt:

Would you like to see a variation of this "lockdown cage" situation that Vilmos Foldes effected upon his opponent Luong Chi Dung, who was already on 2 fouls?

Check this out:

Go to 3:45 in the video if you want to just cut to the chase and watch Vilmos assemble the final side of the "cage" around the object ball. Then watch how Luong gets out of it. But I'd recommend watching the full video, so you can see how this situation went down from the start. Very interesting how this happened, and the "get out" shot!

Larry Nevel once had Cory in a similar spot and had Cory on two fouls. I thought Larry was going to puke when Cory jumped into it.... Funniest part was that Cory safed Larry out of the shot!

I hadn't seen that before, what a great rack they played!

Thanks for the entertainment and planting seeds for future devious play. :grin-square:

Was Larry also on 2 fouls at that point? Which is often the case in a battle like this. That would be funny as hell, a guy jumps out hits the ball and returns a safe, and Larry blows the kick and gets 3 fouled himself to lose the game.

As I understand it...
The ball's position is based on the "point" where it touches the table. A ball that is centered on, or outside of, the headstring - is out of the kitchen.
