Joe Rogan / Fedor Gorst

Nice to see Joe doing a podcast about pool. And he appeared to pick the right guy for this first one. Fedor is one of the top players in the game today and being Russian and foreign to the pool culture in America made for an interesting interview. I wish they would have talked more about the progress of pro pool and how players like Fedor are beginning to make a decent living at the game. Fedor did not say he wouldn't want his children to be pool players. Rather he wouldn't want them to embrace the gambling aspect of it.

The truth is that most professional pool players would prefer to make a living playing tournaments, but that is only possible for the very best players right now. They painted a pretty ugly picture of the gambling side of pool, that to me was more a throwback to a long time ago. Yes, there is still quite a bit of gambling that goes on but all that hard core stuff is not prevalent any more, not like it was thirty or forty years ago. I'm old enough to remember how things were 30, 40 and 50 years ago, when there were very few tournaments and even at them the gambling was more important than the tourney. Times have changed today where a pool player does not need to gamble to make a living. Look at Fedor. He is 22 and sounds like he is done with all that already. Many of the top name players simply do not gamble at all!

That said I'm a believer in the show biz axiom, "I don't care what they say about me. Just spell my name right!" Our sport is getting a lot of views in a variety of mediums and to me that is a good thing. The more people that see stuff like this, the more they will be interested to watch pool on TV or in person. They want to see the people who are being featured on these shows. I learned a long time ago from a top level television producer of sporting events that repeated viewing and exposure is the best thing for the success of any sport. His exact words were, you need to create stars to build a sport. And that is what is happening right now!
I say it over and over, Matchroom needs to get with Netflix. Mosconi Cup has enough drama and short races it would grab the average viewer. Matchroom is sitting on sooooooo much quality footage. Give the public Dennis Hatch/Josh Filler! Give them Jayson!

What about a Fatboy interview..? That would be fun to watch.
Yeah, rly! (y) Calling out @Fatboy . Pick up the phone and dial Joe Rogan :)
(by the way, Fatboy, I hope you read the PM ("conversation") I sent you a while ago. If anything, there's a little envelope icon next to your name and avatar in the upper right corner).

earl said in his billiard network commentary some while ago that he regretted declining the invite. i think this was a great substitute. fedor is well spoken, courteous, and doesn't give the pod public the impression that pool players are broke nutcases. earl would probably been more entertaining, but it's a trade off, and i think this was better for pool
Joe reiterated that he still wants Earl to come on

Dang, Waterdog

Shane & Matchroom understand that pool needs a youth-player pipeline and have begun to create events alongside the pro events.
At least an effort is being taken now backed by 2 prominent pool representatives.

I still think it is bad! Ever been to a boys and girls club and played pool? It is horrible!

No sticks / no tip on the cues/ 8 ball missing/ cloth never changed or leveled.

Most kids get zero introduction in pool unless dear old dad plays! Svb family plays! Jean Balukas dad owned a pool room.! Sky dad got him into pool! BIlly Thorpe dad got him playing.

Most pool rooms now fear losing their liquor license and push kids away!

Pool is a rich kids sport with mom and dad having a table in the home. Otherwise, fat chance!

I was a kid phenom almost 50 years ago. Today you talk to most pool room owners and their youth involvement is horrible.

Boys and Girls donation = zip
Kid leagues = zip
Funding for kids trips to nationals = zero

But

Bo Bo the crack head gets weekly tournaments to bottom feed on.

Just a glimpse of the modern day priority in the sport.

MadMax and, or Jon Kucharo would be my pick.

Joe has mentioned me “not by name” but my biz actually on his show. They took that clip off YT-I wish I had it.

I’d love to do his show, I’m a pretty off the radar guy-no FB or social media. Just here. But his show I’d do. More about pool, biz and things like that. Not about me so much. The pool culture is more interesting than I am. I have some great stories. Would be a good show.

Best

Earl would be great.

Actually a few characters from pool doing shorter segments would be an interesting idea. Clearly Joe has it figured out better than anyone. He’s well versed in the pool world and culture. What ever he would decide I’m on board with.

I think it’s great he interviewed Fedor, and the 60 Minutes piece all within a month. That’s huge for pool! We haven’t got this much press in decades. It can’t be bad. I’d do my part if called on.

Good stuff
Fatboy 💪😃

And now the snooker cheating scandal is even in our mainstream news. The CNN article mentioned pool to explain how it relates to snooker. As Jay says above, there is no such thing as bad publicity.

I always liked Stalev, and think if he stayed the course, he would be as good as Fedor.
Stalev actually was good enough. At some point. But I don't think he could have born the competition. He was very, very gifted, and one of the wittest billiard players of his time (he dominated Russian pyramid). But still he was kind of a self-learner. He took a lesson or two from Django, and sure he was a great observer of the game when played by others (like many of the greats, take SVB as a perfect example). So take it from the horse's mouth, when properly trained players started to mature locally, those who practiced following a system, Stalev faded in pool. Stepanov, Chinakhov, they simply moved Stalev aside. And now Gorst - at times one thinks, is the kid human? And he's only in early twenties.
So nope, 'as good as Fedor' is Mission Impossible for ES.

What would be cool is a follow up podcast !

This one chronicles Joe Rogans first trip to the derby! A documentary of sorts.

Justin Collette from action report should step back in and act as tour guide!

Get the poker pro players high stakes no holds barred section documented.

Get the road guys sleeping in the corners of the hotel/ casino!

The arm wrestling and foot races and the guys going home broke!

Document the use of bitcoin to set up the bets.

Ton of aspects to delve into...

I was fortunate enough to speak to Evgeny Stalev on a video call several months ago. He owns two pool rooms in Russia, is a father, and seems to be doing very well. I think he's playing Russian billiards more so than rotation pool. He said he'd like to visit USA again and attend the Derby City Classic. He loves the action, but he's also a brilliant tournament competitor. I enjoyed speaking with him. It was a fun call.

He slammed the bar box classic. ..guess he's never played on a 7ft valley coin op. They do suck. But everyone else was playing on the same tables and his gal pal didn't have any problems beating guys.

He has played on a 7ft valley. I watched him completely destroy Bobby Pickle on one of the challenge tables during the BCA tourn. at the Riviera in the early 2000's. Bobby was a buzz saw but wasn't ready for a guy like Stalev.

Agreed..but doubt it would ever happen. Rogan not wanting to take the pay cut and Emily wanting her Brit commentators.
Ha yea right. Emily would give an arm to have JR commentate. The audience, pr, etc he’s the only guy who can move the pool needle.
