John Davis cues???

I am interested in John Davis cues, and although I know that his fullsplice blanks are among the best I have not been able to find much about his recent return to cuemaking using the search function. I am most concerned with the rather large ivory collars that he uses on his shafts. Any opinions or experiences appreciated. Thanks.

Why not contact John directly? I am certain he stands behind his work and he will be glad to discuss building a cue with you. JDD95@comcast.net

Good luck. 30 some weeks later, I'm still waiting for completion of a simple blank (not a finished cue) that had an original ETA of 14 weeks . . .

A little birdie told me Mr. Davis was going to be making cues only, with no blanks available to the general public. I have played with one of his cues and was impressed with the way it played. The cue has the thick Ivory collar and flat faced Ivory joint. Here is a pic, this cue may be available.

When did this happen??? Ok. I've been away from the cuemaking and billiard seen for a minute, but last I remembered, you could get a blank from him as long as he had them in stock. He sent one to me so I could check it out. Mabey this is new I don't know, but I'm going to found out though. From what I understand, if you want something fancy, like say a kingwood full splice, you'd have to wait a while, but stuff like cocobolo and purpleheart or a traditional ebony full splice would probalbly be readily available. Again, let me find out and I'll get back to you.

Yes, I garbled it:o That ivory jointed ebony Davis cue looks nice. I also heard John was coming to a halt on producing blanks to sell in order to focus on building his won cues. John has been completely stand up with me over at least 10 transactions. Sorry to hear he is way delayed on a blank delivery. Was he in need of wood or veneers for it possibly?

I can't imagine why Mr. Hoppe has not got his blank. I can offer Mr. Hoppe a direct phone number if he would like to speak with Mr. Davis personally. Tony met up with him just this week here in Tennessee, and he can get Mr. Hoppe in contact with Mr. Davis.

I have emailed John using an address that I found on Tates website, however it has only been a week so my impatience has gotten the better of me. I appreciate the help and will wait to see if I get a response.

I have had a couple transactions with John and no problems at all. He delivered in a timely manner. I am sure that if you give him a call he will take care of it.

Todd,
You will not be disappointed w/one of John's cues. IMO, the most solidly built and best playing cues available. Hit a ball w/ one and you will not want to put it down.
Mr. Hoppe,
Obvisously, there has been some confussion or wires some how crossed between you and Mr. Davis. You've mentioned on this forum on several occassions how John has not delivered on a blank. Have you spoke to John direct? John is one of the most stand-up gents in the billiards industry and would never not deliver on agreed to terms. He can be reached at jbd95@comcast.net or PM me and I'll forward (he doesn't mind) his direct number to you! Or, forward me your contact number and I'll have John call you direct. Thanks,

That's just a mite short of calling Mr. Hoppe a liar. I happen to believe Mr. Hoppe because he has a very good reputation and I don't think he would unjustly accuse anyone of anything.

Just My Opinion.

Arnot,
I believe my question was clear, has Mr. Hoppe spoke to John direct? My efforts are to simply put two gents w/ great reputations in direct contact w/ each other. Point is if you call my house to leave a message or order a cue, you may reach my wife, one of 3 children (ages 5-14 & 17), one of our dogs or perhaps our pet rabbit. I may never get the message!!! If these gents have not spoke direct and agreed to terms than why share w/ our group that one has failed to deliver in a timely manner. Thanks,
Jim Conway

Several have offered to help Mr. Hoppe, but it is clear he doesn't want help. He wants to voice his displeasure with Mr. Davis in every thread about Mr. Davis. Airing publicly his dirty laundry in every one's thread but his own is the path he has chosen to take. Maybe Arnot can build him a blank, they seem to be like minds.

As I've said before, my Davis cue will be buried with me. John stands behind every aspect of his cues, including the ivory joint, and he sincerely wanted me to be happy with my cue in every way. Not sure what your concerns are about the joint material, but you can order any kind of joint you like. Ivory is a fickle material, but I wanted it for the joint and ferrules, and sometimes ivory cracks no matter who the maker is. I accept this. I have had no problems with communication with John or his wife Barbara, who were both superb to me in every way. No doubt, John has become very busy since he re-entered the field, but he's a good man and he treated me fairly and right. Actually, I'm pleased to hear that he is focusing more on cues than blanks!

I prefer ivory joints but I was unclear in my question. I have never seen large ivory collars on shafts like Mr. Davis uses and am having a hard time visualizing what the cue will look like jointed. Also, knowing that ivory can be brittle I have to wonder about the strength of the collars on the shafts. It would appear that they would have to be fairly thin outside the shaft wood to accomodate what looks like a 3/8 pin pilot, but what do I know. I do know that I want one of Johns cues and I am trying to get as much info as possible before ordering. I appreciate everyones help.

Todd

Todd, you can get a Davis made cue with a flat faced Ivory joint and black linen shaft collar. Here is a pic of the Ebony Davis' joint and shaft collars. Hope this helps.

Perfect, thank you. I have not been able to contact John yet and all of his shafts that I have seen had the 1/2" ivory collars. If I had previously seen different joint configurations this fishing expedition would have been unnecessary. Thanks again.

Todd

Sorry I misunderstood...here's a photo of my shaft collars (I hope..). Good luck with John and enjoy!

Ok, I'm a little late getting back with you guys, but I've called Davis HQ personally, (spoke with Barbara or Mrs. Davis to you.:D ) the same day I posted on this thread, and she said, "sure he does...". So, if you want a blank from him, you can get one, but I'm pretty sure that depends on how fancy the blank will be. From what I understand, he can make a blank out most woods as long as they go together; however, if you want a more traditional splice combination, he'll probably have them lying around more readily.:p :D
